Track and Field: AAA State Meet Complete Results -- 3 Earn All State

(June 6, 2013) - The AAA state track and field meet was held last weekend and Stone Bridge High School junior D'Ante Yarborough finished second in the 110 meter hurdles at 14.32. Also earning all-State honors were Broad Run senior Dorian Jenkins (7th in the high jump at 6-4) and Freedom junior Amanda Salami (7th in 100 meters 12.24).

Swim: Stone Bridge's Mack Medals at States in 100, 200 Free; Freedom's Harman Top 16 in 50,100

(Feb. 18, 2013) - Stone Bridge High School sophomore Andi Mack medaled in both the 100 yard and 200 yard free at the VHSL AAA state swim and dive meet held over the weekend at George Mason's Aquatic Center.

Mack swam 53.70 in the 100 yard free and 1:52.95 in the 200.

Freedom senior Michael Harman ended his great Eagle career with a pair of Top 16 finishes, 10th in the 50 free (52.70) and 14th in the 100 free (49.17).

Football: Tuscarora, Woodgrove Join Stone Bridge, Briar Woods in AP State Polls

(Sept. 26, 2012) - In just their third season of play both the Tuscarora and Woodgrove high school football teams broke into the AP's Virginia state football polls this week with Tuscarora, with a big win over Loudoun County, breaking in at No. 8 in AA and Woodgrove, also undefeated like the Huskies, moving in at No. 10.

2-time defending Division 4 state champion Briar Woods continues to be No. 2 in AA, just a hair behind No. 1 Brookville. Amherst County, Salem, James Monroe, Christiansburg and Region II's Kettle Run are 3-7 with Smithfield sandwiched between Tuscarora and Woodgrove.

In AAA, Unbeaten Stone Bridge remains at No. 5 just ahead of nemesis Phoebus. Oscar Smith, Hermitage, Westfield and Salem-Virginia Beach are 1-4. Lake Taylor, Ocean Lakes, North Stafford and Varina are 6-10.

Football: Briar Woods, Stone Bridge, Loudoun County All Ranked in State by AP

(Sept. 17, 2012) - The AP Virginia sportswriter's high school football polls have been released and three Loudoun teams are ranked with Briar Woods No. 2 in AA and Loudoun County is tied for No. 6. In AAA, Stone Bridge is ranked No. 5.

Hermitage is No. 1 in AAA, just ahead of No. 2 Oscar Smith with both schools receiving three first-place votes apiece. Also getting first place votes: Westfield (No. 3), Phoebus (No. 7) and Ocean Lakes (No. 8). In AA, Brookville is first despite have three first place votes to Briar Woods' four. Amherst County (No. 3) also picked up a first place vote. Essex received seven of nine first place votes to take the top spot in A.

Softball: Stone Bridge's Prince, Broderick; Broad Run's Miller Named AAA First Team All-State

(July 31, 2012) - Stone Bridge High School rising seniors Nicole Prince and Sydney Broderick and Broad Run's McKall Miller were named to the AAA first team all-state softball squad by the Virginia High School Coaches Association after helping the Bulldogs and Spartans to state playoff runs in the spring.

Stone Bridge's Courtney Gibson and Broad Run's Frankie Beller were named second team.

Patrick Henry's Emma Mitchell was named the Pitcher of the Year and Osbourn Park's Erica Field the Player of the Year with Robinson's Barry Gorodnick being named Coach of the Year after passing away in May after a two-year battle with non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Girls Soccer: Stone Bridge's Tiernan, Broad Run's Brady Named 1st Team AAA All-State

(July 31, 2012) - Stone Bridge High School's Murielle Tiernan and Broad Run's Erin Brady have been named to the Virginia High School Coaches Association first team all-state AAA girls soccer team.

Mario Hudle of Kellam was named Coach of the Year and Atlee's Ashley Riefner was voted the Player of the Year. Broad Run freshman Caroline Kerns was tabbed second team.

Track and Field: Broad Run's Russell Wins 300 Meter Hurdles; SB's Yarborough 5th in 110 Hurdles; Freedom Girls 4x100 Takes 7th at AAA State Meet

(June 14, 2012) - Broad Run High School senior Jonathan Russell finished a brilliant prep career with a first place finish at the AAA state track and field meet earlier this month. Russell, who will run in college at South Carolina, ran a 37.95 to win the 300 meter hurdles by almost a full second. He was also 9th in the 200 meters.

Also on the boys side, Stone Bridge sophomore D'Ante Yarborough finished fifth in the 110 meter hurdles with a 14.56 finals.

The Freedom High School girls track and field 4x100 relay team of Amanda Salami, Toni Fletcher, Asia Brown and Cortney O'Connell turned in a 48.66 to place 7th overall.

Recently graduated Fletcher is headed to Coastal Carolina in the fall and Brown is attending VCU. O'Connell, a junior, is committed to play soccer at the University of Miami and Salami is a sophomore.

Eagles freshman Brandon Polk did not place in the top eight but he is a runner to watch out for as he qualified at States in the 100, 200 and 4x100 relay.

(June 6, 2012) - These girls are Road Warriors! The Broad Run and Loudoun County high school girls soccer teams advanced to their respective VHSL state tournament semifinals with big quarterfinal wins Tuesday.

Broad Run (14-4-5) shocked highly-ranked Kellam (ranked No. 10 in the country by ESPN HS), 2-1, in the AAA state quarterfinals and Loudoun County (17-4-2) rolled over Tabb, 5-0, in the AA state quareterfinals.


Broad Run will face Deep Run, a 3-2 winner over Stone Bridge, in Friday's 8 p.m. state semifinal at Westfield High School. Cosby and Cox face each other in the other semifinal at 6 p.m.

Loudoun County will face Jefferson Forest, a 3-0 winner over Salem in a noon semifinal at Radford University. Woodgrove faces Blacksburg in the other semifinal at 10 a.m.

Swim: Stone Bridge Freshman Andi Mack Takes 2nd in 100 Free, 4th in 200 Free at AAA State Meet; Leidy, Broad Run 200 Free Relay Medal

(Feb. 23, 2012) - Stone Bridge High School freshman made splash at her first Virginia High School League AAA state meet with a second place finish in the 200 free and a fourth in the 100 free.

Mack swam a 1:52.45 in the 200 free finals to finish runner-up to senior Audrey Kula of Osbourn Park who touched in 1:52.31. In the 100 free Mack turned in a 52.38 in a race won by another freshman, Sofia Revilak of Battlefield in 51.44.

Broad Run senior Jacob Leidy finished 8th in the 100 fly with a 52.43. He turned in a season-best for Loudoun of 51.67 in the prelims. The race was won by Thomas Jefferson freshman Andrew Seliskar in 49.64.

Leidy also helped the Spartan 200 free relay team to a seventh place finish with Leidy, Michael Kopecky, Jack Morrisroe and Alan Horback clocking at 1:29.66. Frank W. Cox High School won the race in a state record time of 1:24.85.

Oakton won the girls team title with 183 points with a close battle for second between Osbourn Park (166) and West Potomac (162). Cox won the boys title with 246 points with Oakton runner-up with 168 and TJ third at 146.

Wrestling: Loudoun Crowns 2 State Champions! Potomac Falls' Zulkhuu wins AA 152 Title; Freedom's Timbers Takes Down AAA 285 Crown

(Feb. 19, 2012) - Wrestling state titles have been tough for Loudoun athletes to bring home with just 20 young men achieving the honor in the past 41 years, but on Saturday both Potomac Falls senior Batchka Zulkhuu and Freedom senior DaQuante Timbers captured state championships.

Zulkhuu became the first local wrestler to win a state title, since another Panther Justin Wheaton did it in 2005, when he captured the 152 pound AA championship in Salem. Zulkhuu won by technical fall over Andrew Saunders of Northside in the finals, 21-6, to cap a 52-4 season.

Just hours later, at Robinson High School in Fairfax, Timbers completed a total domination of the 285-pound weight class in AAA with a pin in 3:08 over Jake Pinkston of Robinson. It was the third fall in four matches for Timbers as he needed just 48 seconds to advance to the quarterfinals and 1:19 to make it to the semifinals. His 15-6 semifinal win over Marshall's Matt Crawford was Timbers only match that didn't end early. The victory left Timbers 55-2 on the season.

Girls Volleyball: Stone Bridge Sweeps into State Semifinals on 20-Match Winning Streak

Ashburn (Nov. 16, 2011) - In the second set Tuesday of the AAA girls volleyball state quarterfinals at Stone Bridge High School, a James River outside hitter watched a ball hit her foot as it dropped out of bounds. That play, and plenty of Bulldog shots that hit the middle of the court, pretty much summed up the match as Stone Bridge swept James River, 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-13).

Stone Bridge (28-2) rolls into the state semifinals Thursday at 7 p.m. on a 20-match winning streak but the Bulldogs will have their work cutout as they faced unbeaten Kellam (31-0), the team that beat Stone Bridge in last year's state finals.
