Interesing...is it really the opinion of the Dulles District coaches that there are NO players on teams other than these 4 (plus 1 player from BW) that deserve consideration? Interesting...it is sad when you put your own egos above the players who deserve mention! Too bad you don't have to make the stats available for EVERYONE to see just how ridiculous you coaches are!!
ReplyDeleteIf this were a team award, your comments would be valid... But I know of at least one player not on these top teams that deserved recognition!
ReplyDeleteThere is clearly an incestuous relationship between the coaches of some of these schools ensuring their players are placed on the team. Talent and contributions have little to do with these selections and show a blatant disregard for the game itself. The world does not revolve around Loudoun County High School and the other schools that were over represented. This sense of entitlement is embarrassing and does a disservice to the players at the other schools who truly deserve to be recognized. It is sad that these young women are learning a life lesson that life is not fair and recognition can be arbitrary rather than earned.
ReplyDeleteHey fans, in trying to moderate these comments, posting your general issues with the process, etc. is fine. Trying to not allow anything that singles out players that shouldn't be on teams but promoting overlooked players is cool -- (so some comments aren't appearing)...
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind that players and coaches can not vote for their own players or themselves in the process.
Historically you are always going to find the top teams, in all sports for all-district, represented well ... Loudoun County, for example, hasn't dropped a district match in 2 years, they have been overpowering and the district honors naturally flow from that ...
Also, coaches basically get 2 looks per season at most opponents so they may be going more off that than any season stats that are brought to the table at voting ...
My one constructive criticism for the process: With 9 teams in the Dulles District the voting needs to be opened up more to just 7 per first and 7 per second team ... that is 14 players honored with 9 teams (not even 2 per team!) ...
Compare to Cedar Run District: 24 girls (9 first, 9 second 6 HM) for 6 schools and Liberty 25 girls (7 first, 7 second, 11 HM) for 8 schools ... Dulles at 14 is way behind ...
Will people still complain ... sure ... but more kids are recognized ... I'm betting the Dulles rules were written when the district first started with just 6 schools in 2001 ... now that it is 33 percent bigger ... the All District selections should expand by one-third as well ...
I now get off my soap box ...
And remember, at the end of the day, the All District selections, is just a small honor ... the true value of the girls athletic participation is the experience they have gained as part of a team and their relationships they have built on and off the court ...
There needs to be a change to the selection process...a limit of 2 players from each team would help curb the "incestuous" (good word from above) relationship that exists here.

ReplyDeleteAlso editing out any comments that are personal attacks on coaches ... are theories of collusion among certain teams because that can't be proven unless I was in the room while voting went on ... Now that is a good idea ... Let VivaLoudoun cover the All-District selections in person!
ReplyDeleteSorry for deleting some of the comments but anonymous attacks are just tough to justify ... but I do like a lively discussion, especially if constructive criticism is applied and I like it when people put forth positive comments about their players or teams (in other words, for every "this girl shouldn't have made it" ... there must be a "this girl should have made it") ...
Keep in mind: With 9 teams in district ... 2 of them (Heritage, Valley) are new back this year so not much history of voting ... 2 other schools (Woodgrove, Tuscarora) are just in 2nd year and BWoods has a new coach ...
In theory, with 9 teams, the bottom 5 teams in the standings could always control the voting for All-District as each team gets an equal vote ...
I would also encourage parents and fans to wait for their Team Awards as I put a lot more stock in what the coach hands out (and in some cases teammates vote for) in the end than what the district votes ... Worth much more in the long run I think, at least from my (distant!) playing days ..
It is somewhat disturbing to me that rather than celebrating the fine student athletes that made all-district, we are posting comments about conspiracy theories and the like. I have watched more volleyball in the last 2 years than I care to remember, and I believe the team is well selected and represents the best volleyball players in the district. I might have chosen 1 or 2 others, but noone is going to agree with every player chosen, particularly if their "favorite player" or "their daughter" were left off. And, "news flash", the best teams are almost always well represented in end of year awards. Why wouldn't they be? Finally, I do not agree the all-district team should be expanded. Having 14 players out of 9 teams makes it a real honor to get selected. To me, a district that has 24 players from only 6 teams downgrades the accomplishment and makes it almost look like a "participation ribbon".
ReplyDeleteAs my daughter, who was overlooked, said "In ten years from now I will look back and care more about what my team and I have accomplished during our time together much more than if my name was on a list." Why don't we congratulate the girls who were chosen and quit complaining about the process? We can use our energy to support our daughters.
