The Falcons (9-1 overall, 8-0 in district) got 145 yards rushing and two scores from junior Cory Colder on 25 carries and sophomore quarterback Trace McSorley gained a career-high 138 yards on just 10 carries with three touchdowns.
"I had challenged Trace to get 500 yards rushing this season and I think he was trying to get it all on one night," joked Briar Woods coach Charlie Pierce about his quarterback who came into the game with just 121 yards rushing on the season but more than doubled that Friday.
Loudoun County (8-2, 6-2) came into the contest with a chance to grab a share of the district title and the Raiders appeared poised to do so with the score tied 7-7 at the half but it was all Briar Woods after the break.
The Falcons, with great field position most of the third quarter, scored on three of their four possessions and the Briar Woods defense picked off two passes in the quarter as Briar Woods went up 28-7 heading into the final quarter.
McSorley, now 22-3 as a starter at quarterback, had the Falcons' lone score in the first half on a 31-yard run -- with sure-footed senior David Clements adding the first of his five extra points -- and McSorley went 44 yards in the fourth quarter to ice the victory on a chilly evening.
Defending VHSL Division 4 state champion Briar Woods has now won 17 consecutive Dulles District games dating back to an Oct. 2009 loss to Loudoun County, and the Falcons enter the Region II Division 4 playoffs Friday as the top seed. Briar Woods will host Dulles District foe Park View, while Loudoun County hosts Leesburg rival Heritage in another first round match-up.
"Last year's team set the foundation, but we have to take it one game at a time in the postseason," said Pierce, who also celebrated his birthday Friday and was serenaded by players, cheerleaders and fans before the Alma Mater after the big win.
The Raiders only score Friday came on a trick play on the first play of the second quarter as senior Zack Green found junior Quan Stinger all alone in the end zone on a halfback option pass on 4th-and-8 from the Falcon 25. That capped a nice 11-play, 80-yard drive for the Raiders and tied the game 7-7.
Briar Woods had scored on the previous possession on their own 80-yard drive, this a 9-play series kept alive by a 27-yard catch and run by Devin Ramos on 3rd-and-16.
The Falcons needed just six plays to go 70 yards to open the third quarter with Colder picking up 35 yards of that including a 16-yard TD run. Later after a short punt gave the Falcons the ball at the Raider 37, Briar Woods found the end zone in four plays with McSorley's 23-yard run setting up a Colder 5-yard score.
Any hope of a Raider comeback was put snuffed when Mark Leith picked off a pass two plays later at midfield. It was another quick TD drive as Briar Woods moved 49 yards in five plays with Colder this time setting up McSorley as the junior's 33-yard, highlight reel run took the ball to the 1 where McSorley burrowed into the end zone on the next snap behind the big Falcon O-line.
McSorley's last TD of the night, a nice 44-yard run, included the sophomore quarterback directing traffic downfield as he pointed out to WR Matt Rolin, a block he needed to score.
"Matt told me on the sidelines after the run that he was surprised to see me running so far downfield!," said McSorley.
