Spring Sports: 11 Loudoun Teams Plays this Week in State Tournaments!

(June 3, 2013) - School ends this week in Loudoun on Thursday but athletes from 11 local teams hope they are still playing on Saturday as the Virginia High School League holds its annual state tournaments in baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer and tennis this week. Those teams with hopes of bringing a state title back to Loudoun and their next state game:

• Baseball: Woodgrove: AA quarterfinals Tues. June 4 at Warhill, 6:30 p.m.
• Softball: Stone Bridge: AAA quarterfinals Tues. June 4 at home vs. Osbourn, 5:30 p.m.
• Softball: Woodgrove: AA quarterfinals Tues. June 4 at home vs. Tabb, 6 p.m.
• Boys Lacrosse: Dominion: state semifinals Wed. June 5 vs. Madison at Westfield High School, 5 p.m. 
• Girls Lacrosse: Loudoun Valley state semifinals Tues. June 5 vs. Langley at Westfield High School, 7:30 p.m.
• Boys Soccer: Briar Woods: AA quarterfinals Tues. June 4 at home vs. Culpeper, 5:30 p.m.
• Boys Soccer: Broad Run: AAA quaerterfinals Tues. June 4 at Oakton,  7 p.m.  
• Boys Soccer: Tuscarora: AA quarterfinals Tues. June 4 vs. Lafayette at Wanner Stadium, 7 p.m.
• Girls Soccer: Briar Woods: AA quarterfinals Tues. June 4 at home vs. Jamestown, 7:30 p.m.
• Girls Soccer: Woodgrove: AA quarterfinals Tues. June 4 at Courtland, 6 p.m.
• Boys Tennis: Briar Woods: AA quarterfinals Tues. June 4 vs. James Monroe at the University of Mary Washington

Ticket prices at each venue are $10. Senior citizens must pay at state events.

(June 5, 2012) - We interrupt the Briar Woods vs. Woodgrove 2-year long softball tour to bring you games against other teams ... but don't be surprised if Briar Woods and Woodgrove aren't playing again later this week.

The two teams that have faced each other nine times since the start of 2011 including five meetings in championship games were at it again Saturday with the Wolverines beating the Falcons 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning in Purcellville.

Last year Briar Woods took the Dulles District and AA state titles while Woodgrove won Region II. This year Woodgrove has won Dulles and Region. Tonight they face Region I opponents with Woodgrove hosting Culpeper and Briar Wood travelling to Poquoson.

On Saturday it was Amanda Rathjen with her first triple of the season in the bottom of the seventh and then Courtney Bogan hit a walk-off single into left field with two outs to set off the celebration.

Culpeper (18-8) at Woodgrove (24-2), 6 p.m.
*Woodgrove has gone 23-1 since losing 1-0 in the opening week to Briar Woods with the lone loss the second game of a non-district doubleheader.
*Woodgrove has shut out 12 of the last 16 opponents faced
*Woodgrove has 14 wins this year by 10 or more runs.
*Woodgrove pitcher Allie Reid has hit three home runs
*Ashley Cole leads WG with 38 RBIs. Reid has 25. Courtney Bogan and Christy Haney each have 17.
*Culppeper lost 2-0 to Poquoson in the Region I finals

Briar Woods (22-4) at Poquoson (24-2), 5 p.m.
*Maggie Tyler threw a 2-hitter in the regional finals with 14 strikeouts for a 2-0 win.
*Tyler is a Virginia Tech recruit and has nine home runs the past two years at the plate. She also is nearing 1,000 career strikeouts. Read more on HRVarsity.com
*Briar Woods senior Macy Jones led the Falcons to a state title last year
*She is the school's all-time leading pitcher and hitter and will play OF for Penn State next year. She has seven home runs this year, despite teams pitching around her often.
*Jones was named the Region II Pitcher of the Year
*The Falcons are 86-17 with Jones as a 4-year starter
*Briar Woods has wins over Broad Run and Stone Bridge, two teams in the AAA quarterfinals tonight

(June 5, 2012) - The Woodgrove High School girls soccer team rolls into the state playoffs tonight on a 20-game winning streak fueled by a roster with 10 college-bound athletes. Tabitha McHale's early goal on Saturday was all the scoring for Woodgrove over Dulles District foe Loudoun County in the 1-0 Region II finale.

The Raiders are on the road tonight with high-scoring Shauna Kain up top and hoping for another big game from keeper Kelsey Slack, who had some great saves in the second half Saturday to keep it a 1-goal game.

Grafton (14-2-3) at Woodgrove (21-0-1), 7 p.m.
*Woodgrove has won 20 straight since an opening-week tie with Briar Woods
*Since the start of May only Briar Woods has scored off Woodgrove with the Wolverines registering seven shutous
*Woodgrove made it to the state semifinals in the first year the school opened.

*Grafton must recover from giving up a goal in the final minute of regulation in the regional final game that sent things to overtime and then given up a goal in the final seconds of OT to lose.
*Woodgrove line-up is chalk full of college-bound players including: senior Katie Beebe (Longwood), Lexi Clarke (Stony Brook), Lucy Etro (Wofford), Addie Healy (Washington and Lee), Tabitha McHale (UNC Greensboro), Charlotte Radcliffe (Coastal Carolina), and junior Brittany Basinger (Penn State), Ashley Bonner (American), Bergen Elkjer (Indiana State), and Sarah Hardison (George Mason).
*Bonner leads WG with 18 goals and Hardison has 16 with McHale scoring 12.
*Clarke has 15 assists with Victoria Perry picking up nine.
*Basinger spent time this spring with the US. Women's U-17 team, starting on defense as the team won the CONCACAF championship in Guatemala and qualified for the FIFA U-17 World Cup this summer in Azerbaijan.

(June 5, 2012) - Briar Woods and Tuscarora high school boys soccer teams will play in tonight's VHSL AA state quarterfinals with Briar Woods on the road at Jamestown in Williamsburg and Tuscarora hosting Tabb.

Briar Woods (18-3-2) at Jamestown (16-1-1), 7 p.m.

*Falcons are making their first ever state playoff appearance

*Briar Woods scoring: Connor Pompilio (Virginia Tech recruit) has 14 goals, Will Salomon 10, David Clements 9, Jimmy Grace 8 and Collin Verfuth 6.

*Assists: Clements has 17, Grace 10 and Pompilio 8.

*Falcons keeper Nick Der-Hecopian averaged 11 saves a game in the regional tournament

Girls Volleyball: Stone Bridge Sweeps into State Semifinals on 20-Match Winning Streak

Ashburn (Nov. 16, 2011) - In the second set Tuesday of the AAA girls volleyball state quarterfinals at Stone Bridge High School, a James River outside hitter watched a ball hit her foot as it dropped out of bounds. That play, and plenty of Bulldog shots that hit the middle of the court, pretty much summed up the match as Stone Bridge swept James River, 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-13).

Stone Bridge (28-2) rolls into the state semifinals Thursday at 7 p.m. on a 20-match winning streak but the Bulldogs will have their work cutout as they faced unbeaten Kellam (31-0), the team that beat Stone Bridge in last year's state finals.

Leesburg (Nov. 16, 2011) - Loudoun County High School served up another postseason sweep Tuesday night in the Virginia AA girls volleyball quarterfinals. The host Raiders recorded 18 aces in a 25-12, 25-16, 25-15 victory over Chancellor, winning in straight sets for a ninth consecutive match.

"We've been working at practice with our serving a lot more with more reps every single day," Loudoun County coach Jenica Matthias said. "The kids, as a whole, have all improved their serves."

Senior setter Jordan Leiter led the Raiders with eight aces Tuesday, including an impressive early run of serves that helped Loudoun County build a 9-1 lead in the first set. Senior Jenna Strange and sophomore Maggie Phillips both served up four aces, while senior Katrina Kirby and sophomore Kelsey Slack each added an ace.

"Coach has us doing a lot of serving when you are dead tired," Leiter said. "When you are falling on the ground and trying to get some air, and you can still serve it in hard, I guess that's what keeps you consistent."

The Raiders (27-1) advance to Friday's state semifinals where they will face a familiar opponent in Cave Spring (27-3). Loudoun County has defeated Cave Spring - a 25-12, 25-5, 25-21 winner over E.C. Glass in Tuesday's quarterfinals - in each of the last two state semifinals. The Raiders also won a five-set match against the Knights earlier this season on Oct. 1.

Girls Volleyball: Freedom's Best Season Ever Ends in 5-Set State Quarterfinal Loss to Ocean Lakes

South Riding (Nov. 16, 2011) – The thing about momentum in sports is that you can’t stop to admire it or even contemplate it. You can only continue to ride the wave and hope it takes you home to victory. On Tuesday the Freedom High School girls volleyball team was on such a roll in the AAA state quarterfinals that you figured it was only a matter of serves before parents and fans would be plugging Siegel Center directions into their GPS devices.

Freedom (22-6) had just won back-to-back sets going away – senior Kaitlyn LaMantia and Jasmine Jackson led a 25-14 blitz in the usually decisive third set – and the Eagles, with their Black Hole student section at full throat, were leading 13-8 in the fourth set.

A dozen points to the state semifinals but Ocean Lakes (27-5), led by hard-hitting junior Taylor Stratton – who hit the ball hard enough that she might have left a divot or two in the Freedom gym floor – fought back and tied the match with a 25-21 set four win.

That momentum that had Freedom dreaming of the Final Four was now riding the other way and Ocean Lakes, taking advantage of Eagle errors, scored the first four points of the fifth set and never looked back as they ended Freedom’s best season ever with a 15-11 win.

With Tabb making an ill-advised pass back towards halfcourt, Potomac Falls High School senior Lukas Mihailovich raced after the loose ball, won a close battle, and then swooped in for a game-winning layin as time expired to give the Panthers a 46-44 VHSL Division 4 boys basketball state quarterfinal win over Tabb. Basketball: Buzzer Beater Sends Potomac Falls Boys to State Semifinals; Loudoun County Girls Cruise into Final Four

(Mar. 5, 2011) - Senior Lukas Mihailovich's steal and layin with less than two seconds left Saturday gave the Potomac Falls High School boys a dramatic, 46-44, come-from-behind win over Tabb in the VHSL Division 4 state quarterfinals at Robinson High School. The defending state champion Panthers trailed by 13 points in the second half before fighting back into the contest.

The Loudoun County High School girls prevailed over a scrappy Eastern View squad, 57-41, in their VHSL Division 4 state quarterfinal as the Raiders seek their second state title in three years. Senior Brittany Batts scores 22 of her 28 points in the second half of the win and, according to Loudoun Times-Mirror sports editor Carl Lukat's super stat sheet, junior Casey Cummings hauled down 20 rebounds.

Loudoun County and Potomac Falls will play back-to-back again, this time on Wednesday in the state semifinals at VCU's Siegel Center in Richmond with the Raiders facing the winner of Turner Ashby-Hidden Valley at 10:30 a.m. and the Panthers taking on Christianshburg, a 73-54 winner Saturday over E.C. Glass, at 12:15 p.m.

(Mar. 5, 2011) - The Loudoun County High School girls and Potomac Falls High School boys basketball teams will take to the court today in VHSL Division 4 state quarterfinal action at Robinson High School in Fairfax. (Feb. 28, 2011) - Loudoun fans can catch a VHSL Division 4 state quarterfinal doubleheader Saturday at Robinson High School as the Loudoun County girls and Potomac Falls boys will play back-to-back at 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. The VHSL just released the full state quarterfinal super site schedule:
