Girls Volleyball: Cedar Run District Tournament Set - Broad Run, Freedom to Host Unique Doubleheaders on Halloween

(Oct. 30, 2012) - The Cedar Run District girls volleyball tournament is set with No. 1 seed Broad Run and No. 2 seed Freedom hosting unique doubleheaders on Wednesday as the two Loudoun schools will host quarterfinal matches at 5 p.m. and then play the winners of those matches just 30 minutes later in the semifinals.

At Freedom, Battlefield and Stonewall Jackson will meet first with the winner playing Freedom later that night and at Broad Run, Osbourn and Patriot will meet with the winner taking on the Spartans.

Golf: Battlefield and Patriot Split Cedar Run District Mini Tournaments

(Aug. 16, 2012) - Battlefield High School and Patriot High School split Cedar Run District mini tournaments last week at Dominion Valley and 1757 Club. Broad Run was third and Freedom was fourth at both events.

At 1757, the Spartans were led by Jake Wohlgemuth's 76 with Desiree Razon shooting 78 and Mitch Pittman 79. Broad Run was just five strokes behind Battlefield and seven off Patriot's winning 311 team score. Freedom's Duncan Walter shot 79 at 1757.

Lacrosse: Freedom Boys Come from Behind for First Ever Playoff Win; Broad Run Girls Advance

(May 10, 2012) - The Freedom High School boys lacrosse team came from behind Wednesday night to capture their first ever postseason victory with a 10-7 win at Osbourn in the Cedar Run District quarterfinals. Freedom will play at top seed Battlefield tonight in the district semifinals.

Down 6-4 at the half, Will Walter scored four of his five goals in the fourth quarter to lead Freedom's comeback. Also for the Eagles: Daniel Garbus scored three goals, Nick Bruno scored a goal with two assists and John O'Brien had a goal.

The Broad Run girls will take on second seed Freedom tonight in South Riding in a Cedar Run District semifinal. Broad Run advanced with a 16-6 win over Stonewall Jackson Wednesday while Freedom had a bye. The winner of the game will clinch a bid to the Northwest Region tournament.

The Broad Run boys will host Stonewall Jackson tonight in the boys other semifinal.

Tennis: Cedar Run District Semifinals Today; Freedom's Wong and Cragg Claim Doubles Title

(May 3, 2012) - The AAA Cedar Run District boys and girls tennis tournament semifinals are this afternoon with regular-season champions, Freedom boys and Broad Run girls, both hosting contests.

The Eagles will take on the Battlefield boys while the Spartans host the Battlefield girls. Stonewall Jackson plays hosts to the other two semifinals with the Raider boys facing Broad Run and the Raider girls taking on Osbourn.

The Freedom doubles team of Wesley Wong and Alex Cragg defeated the Stonewall Jackson top doubles team in a playoff to claim the district's regular season title and a bid to the Northwest Region doubles tournament.

Boys Tennis: Freedom Has High Expectations for Postseason after 16-0 Regular-Season Run, Cedar Run District Title

South Riding (May 1, 2012) - The AAA Cedar Run District boys tennis tournament starts today with Freedom High School idle after the Eagles netted the regular season title and district's top seed with a school-record perfect 16-0 regular season run.

Broad Run, a third seed in the six-team tournament, will host Osbourn today at 2 p.m. in a quarterfinal. Freedom has a bye and will face the Patriot vs. Battlefield winner in Thursday's semifinals.

Freedom, moving up to AAA level this year with increased student enrollment, wrapped up the 16-0 run with a 9-0 sweep over Osbourn last week on Senior Night. The  Eagles were led to victory by seniors Mukundh Balasubramanian, Tin Nguyen-Phan, and team captain Varun Kulkarni. Junior's Wesley Wong and Alex Cragg as well as freshman sensation Brian Park also posted wins.

Wong finished with a perfect record at the No. 1 singles position and secured the district singles championship. Wong teamed with Cragg to secure a tie for first in the district doubles and will play Stonewall Jackson's top duo today to determine the Cedar Run District doubles champions. 

Doubles wins last week were also posted by No. 2 Park/Kulkarni and No. 3 seniors Abhishek Sabbe and Evan Duffy-Ledbetter.

For the season: No. 1 Wong, No. 2 Cragg, No. 3 Park and No. 5 Kulkarni are undefeated in singles with 16 wins each. Kulkarni also accomplished a significant milestone with his victory against Osbourn, which was his 50th career singles win for the Eagles.

The team also celebrated the many contributions of team managers seniors Katie Dunlop and Tylor French. Other members of the championship Eagles are: seniors David Choi, Daniel Wen and David Du, junior Timothy Yao, sophomores Soren Charmsaz and Thomas Gulick and freshman Anchit Kolla and Joseph Kim.

Over the 4-year career of the class of 2012 the Freedom boys tennis team has an outstanding 60-11 record and so far has won two regular season championships and two tournament championships.

Girls Tennis: Broad Run Nets Cedar Run Regular Season Title, Top Seed after School-Record 14-0 Run

Ashburn (May 1, 2012) - The AAA Cedar Run District girls tennis tournament starts today with Broad Run High School idle after the Spartans netted the regular season title and district's top seed with a school-record perfect 14-0 regular-season run.

Freedom, the last seed in the six-team tournament, plays at No. 3 Osbourn today at 3:30 p.m. Broad Run awaits the winner of Patriot vs. Battlefield in Thursday's semifinals. The Spartans have already qualified for the Northwest Regional team tennis tournament.

Broad Run was simply overpowering in posting a 10-0 Cedar Run mark as the Spartans went 59-1 in singles competition against district foes and 28-2 in doubles.

The Spartans No. 1 singles player Mel Waterman is the district's top seed and has qualified for the Northwest Region tournament. Waterman and her doubles partner, Mari Botha, also qualified as the district's top seed into the regional tournament.

Broad Run has just two seniors on the squad -- No. 3 singles Cory Schaefer and No. 6 Gauri Powale.

(Nov. 3, 2011) - Broad Run High School's Mallory Brickerd, who led the Spartans to an 18-2 regular season mark before sitting out the final two games with an injury, was named the Cedar Run District Player of the Year in a vote of the district's coaches. Freedom's Jim Clark, who led his team to the regular season title with a 9-1 district mark, was named Coach of the Year.

Football: Broad Run Bounces Back with 34-20 at Stonewall Jackson, Can Clinch Part of Cedar Run Title with Win over Freedom Friday

(Oct. 30, 2011) - After a rare regular season loss a week ago to Battlefield, the Broad Run High School football team bounced back Friday night with a 34-20 Cedar Run District win at Stonewall Jackson.

The Spartans (2-1, 7-2) can clinch a share of the district title with a win this Friday at Freedom (0-3, 1-8). Battlefield (2-1, 8-2) and Osbourn (2-1, 7-3) already have a share of the title.

Broad Run struggled the past two weeks in the first half -- giving up 20 or more points in each game -- but on Friday the Spartans were comfortably up 24-6 at the half. Derril Thomas rushed for 113 yards on 20 carries and scored from 1 and 15. BR senior quarterback Connor Jessop was 10 of 18 for 186 yards and one TD pass along with two picks.

Golf: Battlefield Wins Cedar Run District Tournament; Broad Run is Runner-up, Qualifying for Regionals for First Time in School History

(Sept. 16, 2011) - Battlefield High School captured the AAA Cedar Run District golf tournament Thursday at 1757 Club with a 299 team score and host Broad Run turned in a big back nine to finish runner-up at 320 and qualify for the Northwest Region tournament.

This will be Broad Run's first trip in school history to Regionals for golf.

Stonewall Jackson's Chad McCann was low medalist with a 71. He was two strokes better than a pair of Bobcats -- Thomas Fricke and P.J. Leonard at 73.

Sloan Meadows and Desiree Razon led Broad Run, each shooting 75. Razon's 75 came from the No. 6 position for the Spartans.

Freedom took third as a team with a 328. While the Eagles won't move on as a team, the trio of Billy Ferrell (74), Duncan Walter (80) and Phil McQuitty (85) qualified for Regionals.

Also making Regionals: Partiot High School's Terry Smith (80) and Jake Nordy (85).

Patriot, a first-year school in Nokesville, took fourth at 347 and Osbourn was fifth at 413. Stonewall did not field a full squad.

Boys Lacrosse: Heritage, Loudoun Valley Players Earn Cedar Run District Honors

Gymnastics: Loudoun Valley's Bramhall and White Help Vikings Qualify for Regionals

Leesburg (Feb. 3, 2011) - Jessica Bramhall and Victoria White both qualified for the Northwest Regionals in All-Around by finishing in the top four Wednesday at the Cedar Run District meet and the Viking duo helped Loudoun Valley High School move on to regionals as well with a second place finish behind champion Battlefield.

Battlefield scored a strong 145.250 for the title while the Vikes posted a season-best 129.625. Host Heritage was fourth in the five-team meet with 96.975. Gar-Field won the 3-team Cardinal District meet held at the same time.

Battlefield's Brianna Artz won the All-Around with a 37.475. Her teammate Alex Fairbanks was runner-up at 36.525. Bramhall was third (35.200) followed by White (32.175) in the fourth and final qualifying spot.

In each event, the top eight moved on to the Northwest Region meet which will be held Feb. 11, starting at 5 p.m., at Loudoun Valley.

Swim: Battlefield Sweeps Boys, Girls Cedar Run District Meet; Heritage Girls Second, Boys Third

(Feb. 2, 2011) - Battlefield High School swam away with both the girls and boys titles at the Cedar Run District meet Saturday in Manassas. Locally, Heritage fared well with the Pride girls runner-up and the boys third.

Kaleigh Rosenburg of Heritage and Kelsey Ryan of Loudoun Valley each won two individual events with Rosenburg taking the 200 IM (2:10.01) and 100 breast (1:06.76), while Ryan won the 100 fly (59.71) and 100 back (1:01.19).

The Pride also won the girls 200 free relay with Katie Lee, Alaina Doiron, Shannon Ober and Jordan Gold teaming for the win.

On the boys side, Rosenburg's brother, Damon, took the 100 breast with a 1:00.34.

Volleyball: Heritage Setter Stephanie Yokoyama Named Cedar Run Player of the Year

(Nov. 9, 2010) - Heritage High School junior setter, Stephanie Yokoyama, has been named the AAA Cedar Run District Player of the Year.

Yokoyama led the Pride to a regular season and tournament title with a current 20-2 record. Pride coach Carmel Keilty was named Coach of the Year.

Competitive Cheer: Battlefield Wins Cedar Run Meet with Heritage Runner-up

(Oct. 28, 2010) - Battlefield High School captured the AAA Cedar Run District cheer meet Wednesday night with host Heritage finishing runner-up.

The Bobcats scored 239 points to out-distance the Pride at 214.5. Stonewall Jackson was third at 211 followed by Osbourn (208.5) and Loudoun Valley (203).
