Broad Run, a third seed in the six-team tournament, will host Osbourn today at 2 p.m. in a quarterfinal. Freedom has a bye and will face the Patriot vs. Battlefield winner in Thursday's semifinals.
Freedom, moving up to AAA level this year with increased student enrollment, wrapped up the 16-0 run with a 9-0 sweep over Osbourn last week on Senior Night. The Eagles were led to victory by seniors Mukundh Balasubramanian, Tin Nguyen-Phan, and team captain Varun Kulkarni. Junior's Wesley Wong and Alex Cragg as well as freshman sensation Brian Park also posted wins.
Wong finished with a perfect record at the No. 1 singles position and secured the district singles championship. Wong teamed with Cragg to secure a tie for first in the district doubles and will play Stonewall Jackson's top duo today to determine the Cedar Run District doubles champions.
Doubles wins last week were also posted by No. 2 Park/Kulkarni and No. 3 seniors Abhishek Sabbe and Evan Duffy-Ledbetter.
For the season: No. 1 Wong, No. 2 Cragg, No. 3 Park and No. 5 Kulkarni are undefeated in singles with 16 wins each. Kulkarni also accomplished a significant milestone with his victory against Osbourn, which was his 50th career singles win for the Eagles.
The team also celebrated the many contributions of team managers seniors Katie Dunlop and Tylor French. Other members of the championship Eagles are: seniors David Choi, Daniel Wen and David Du, junior Timothy Yao, sophomores Soren Charmsaz and Thomas Gulick and freshman Anchit Kolla and Joseph Kim.
Over the 4-year career of the class of 2012 the Freedom boys tennis team has an outstanding 60-11 record and so far has won two regular season championships and two tournament championships.
