The schools created the Western Cup in 2010, the year Woodgrove opened, to cultivate and generate a friendly rivalry while also bringing a tight-knit community together. Loudoun Valley had been the only high school in Purcellville since 1962.
In 2010-2011 only varsity football competed for the cup, since the schools were placed in different districts. In 2011-2012, both schools played in the Dulles District and all varsity sports counted towards the Western Cup Challenge.
Loudoun Valley took the 2010-2011 Cup with a convincing win over the Wolverines. For the 2011-2012 academic year, tides have turned. Not only did Woodgrove win the varsity football game, they earned 22 total wins with only 11 losses to officially claim the Western Cup in 2011-2012.
