Girls Volleyball: Loudoun County JR Maggie Phillips Named Region II Player of the Year; Raiders Brown Takes Coaching Honors

(Nov. 13, 2012) - Loudoun County High School junior Maggie Phillips has been named the Region II girls volleyball Player of the Year in a vote of coaches, becoming the fourth straight Raider to take the honor and fifth in six years.

Loudoun County coach Jenica Brown, who led the Raiders to their seventh straight Region II title on Saturday and a 25-1 record going into tonight's VHSL AA state quarterfinal against New Kent (7 p.m. in Leesburg), has been named the Coach of the Year for the third straight time and fourth time since 2006. Brown's brother, Jarod, a Raider assistant coach during the long run, also took the honors in 2009 when he was acting head coach.

Football: Kettle Run Ends Tuscarora's First Playoff Run

Nokesville (Nov. 18, 2011) - Tuscarora High School’s unlikely playoff run ended suddenly Friday as Kettle Run High School shut out the Huskies 32-0.

Baseball: Broad Run Rallies from 5-Run Deficit to Clinch State Bid, Hosts Potomac Falls Tonight at 6 p.m. in Region II Title Game

Ashburn (Jun3, 4, 2011) - The Broad Run High School baseball team rallied from a 6-1 deficit to defeat visiting Kettle Run High School, 11-7, to advance to the Region II championship today in at Broad Run at 6 p.m. By virtue of their victory the Spartans are assured of a place in the AA state tournament for the second time in the last four years.

Boys Soccer: Tuscarora Shocks Kettle Run on Goal with 15.6 Seconds Left in Sudden Death OT

Bealeton (June 3, 2011) - The Tuscarora High School boys soccer team, a first-year program with no seniors, is headed to the VHSL AA state tournament after the Huskies shocked Kettle Run, 2-1 in overtime, on Angel Ceron-Garcia's goal with 15.6 seconds left in the sudden death OT period.

Baseball: Freedom's Best Season Ever Ends in Tough Road Loss in Region II Quarterfinals

Nokesville (June 3, 2011) - Fresh off a victory in their first ever regional contest on Monday at Monticello, the Freedom Eagles looked to advance to the AA Region II semi-finals with a win at Kettle Run Tuesday night. However, despite pounding out 13 hits and 8 runs, and building leads of 3-0, 6-2, and 8-6, the Eagles inability to find the strike zone in the game's waning moments was ultimately their undoing, as they fell in heartbreaking fashion to the Cougars 9-8.

Wrestling: Host Stone Bridge Wins First Annual VivaLoudoun Holiday Tournament

Ashburn (Dec. 31, 201010) - Host Stone Bridge High School, capturing seven of 14 title matches, won the first annual VivaLoudoun Holiday Wrestling Tournament Thursday.

The Bulldogs scored 245 points in the five-team tournament that featured all three Ashburn high schools with Broad Run second at 202. Kettle Run was third at 176 followed by Herndon (102) and Briar Woods (69).

Local fans were treated to a lot of Ashburn match-ups in the finals with the first six matches all features Briar Woods, Broad Run and Stone Bridge wrestlers.

Briar Woods 112-pounder Michael Hulcher was named the tournament's MVP after an exciting 3-2 win over Broad Run's Angel Rios in the finals. Stone Bridge's Sam Smith earned the Fastest Pin award.

The Bulldogs captured titles at 125 (Jon Sommer), 135 (Ben Oslund), 140 (Cam Bowen), 145 (Pat Taylor), 152 (Jonathan Faul), 160 (Brendan Scully), and 215 (Aaron Palmer).

Broad Run won titles at 103 (Akhil Gowda), 119 (Nelson Schmidl), 130 (Neil Hartman) and 171 (Diego Loya).

Wrestling: Battle for Ashburn Today at VivaLoudoun Holiday Wrestling Tournament

Ashburn (Dec. 30, 2010) - Ashburn's three high school wrestling teams -- Briar Woods, Broad Run and Stone Bridge -- take to the mats today in the VivaLoudoun Holiday Wrestling Tournament.

Herndon and Kettle Run join the three local schools with wrestling running from 9 a.m. to about 4:30 p.m. Admission is $5.

Wrestling: VivaLouodun Holiday Tournament at Stone Bridge Seeking Three Varsity Teams

(Dec. 14, 2010) - The VivaLoudoun Holiday Wrestling tournament scheduled for Stone Bridge High School on Dec. 30 has slots open for three varsity teams.

Briar Woods, Broad Run, Herndon, Kettle Run and the host Bulldogs are already slated for the event. Teams interested should contact Mike Faul (michael.faul@lcps.org) or Brian Parke (brian.parke@lcps.org).

Action for the tournament starts at 9 a.m. with weigh-in at 8 a.m. Finals are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Medals will go to the top four place winners in each weight class as well as plaques for Outstanding Wrestling and Fastest Pin. There will be a trophy for the top team.

(There is also a strong possibility that the VivaLoudoun Fox will make an appearance and demonstrated his world famous "sleeper hold" ... you will not want to miss that)

Volleyball: Loudoun County Edges Stone Bridge in 5-Game Thriller at Surebet Classic

(Sept. 14, 2010) - They sure named the Cheers Sports Classic with the right moniker as there was plenty of great volleyball to cheer about at the tournament at Loudoun County High School Saturday as the host  handed Stone Bridge its  first defeat of the season with a 3-2 thriller.

Loudoun County (5-1) prevailed 17-25, 25-21, 25-21, 20-25, 15-11 over Stone Bridge (6-1) in the first match-up of the tournament. The Bulldogs bounced back with wins over Sherando (23-25, 25-8, 25-18, 29-27) and Kettle Run (25-7, 25-11, 29-27) to finish the day 2-1.

The Raiders -- which have won three consecutive AA state titles -- suffered a letdown after the Stone Bridge win with a surprising loss to Kettle Run in three games (25-27, 20-25, 23-25) but County recovered to beat Sherando (25-18, 25-18, 25-20) to also finish the day 2-1.

Sherando salvaged its Saturday with a win over Kettle Run to leave both of those schools at 1-2.

The Falcons went into Fauquier County on Wednesday to take on Kettle Run High School for a make-up game of Tuesday's "Snowed-Out" game and super sophomore guard Myles Tate led the Falcons to the win with 20 points and 12 assists.

Kettle Run played a tough first quarter as Spencer Carter kept them within reach of the Falcons. Carter finished with a team high 16 points for the Cougars.

Yves Kaume's 3-pointer at the end of the half put Briar Woods up double digits for good as the Falcons cruised to a 23-point victory. Five Falcons finished the night in double digits.

Briar Woods (2-0) will now travel to Loudoun County High School on Friday night to take on the Raiders in their first district game of the year.

Volleyball: Two-Time Defending State Champion Loudoun County Headed to States for Fourth Straight Season

Leesburg (Nov. 12, 2009) - The two-time AA defending state champion Loudoun County High School volleyball team is headed to the state tournament for the fourth straight season. The Raiders were AA runner-ups in 2006 and state champs in 2007 and 2008.

The Raiders punched their ticket to the VHSL AA State Tournament with a 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-17, 25-21) over Kettle Run High School Thursday.

Before they play their state Quarterfinal next Tuesday, three-time defending region champion LC must travel to Western Albemarle Saturday for the Region II title match. Loudoun County is the only team to defeat Western Albemarle this season as they won on Oct. 3 at the site of Saturday's final. Western Albemarle defeated Sherando 3-1 in the other semifinal match.

Loudoun County was led by Juliane Hanna (11 kills, 8 digs, 6 points), Jenna Strange (10 kills, 7 points, 3 blocks), Molly Balwdin (7 kills, 4 blocks), Emily Vandegrift (6 kills, 3 points, 2 digs), Erin Dancy (3 kills), Rachel Arigo (3 kills, 4 digs, 1 block), Robin Marsala (43 assists, 6 digs, 4 points, 2 kills), Hannah Arnold (13 points, 6 digs, 3 aces, 2 kills), Gabby Serafin (17 digs), Kathleen Horvath (6 digs, 5 points, 3 aces), Sammy Dormio (3 digs).

The Raiders improved to 22-3 on the season.
