Girls Volleyball: Loudoun County Sweeps All-Region Honors with Jenna Strange Player of the Year, Jenica Matthias Coach of the Year

(Nov. 14, 2011) - Loudoun County High School girls volleyball, which swept to a sixth consecutive Region II title Saturday night, claimed the top regional honors with senior Jenna Strange named the Player of the Year and Jenica Matthias named the Coach of the Year.

Strange joined senior teammates Katrina Kirby and Libero Gabby Serafin on the first team along with Heritage senior setter Stephanie Yokoyama. Second team honors went to Heritage sophomore Sydney Busa and Potomac Falls junior Kayla Carlton.

(Sept. 19, 2011) - The Loudoun County High School football team made a big statement with a, 28-0, shut out win at Sherando Friday in a key Region II Division 4 non-district game.

The Raiders improve  4-0 on the season, just a win shy of last year's win total, while Sherando falls to 2-2.

Loudoun Couny's defense registered its second shutout of the season, limiting the Warriors to minus-14 yards rushing in the first half on 1 attempts. Sherando came in averaging 406 yards total offense  per game  but was limited to 143 total Friday.

Raider quarterback Jake Lokey was super efficient with 10 of 11 passing for 146 yards passing, including a 34-yard score to Brad Szoka for  the game's first score that capped a 5-play, 65-yard drive. Lokey also scored on a 1-yard run after a 24-yard reception to Brock Badman set up the touchdown.

Both Antonio Rutherford (94 yards rushing) and Badman had rushing TDs.

County could have won by a bigger score but their first drive of the night ended on fourth down inside the Sherando 10 and they fumbled the ball away later in the first quarter inside the Sherando 30 after Szoka had picked off a ball for good field position.

Rutherford gained all but 11 of the Raiders 60 yards on the second scoring drive, taking it in from 12 yards.

Leading 14-0, Lokey's keeper on the first play of the fourth quarter put the game away. Badman finished the scoring with a 3-yard run.

Basketball: Monday Night Scores + Skinny

(Dec. 14, 2010) - The Loudoun County High School boys basketball team earned its first win of the season with a 61-58 overtime non-district victory over Loudoun Valley Monday night.

The Skinny: The Vikings (1-3) fought back from a 13-point halftime deficit to send this game into overtime but the Raiders (1-3) out-scored Valley, 8-5, in the extra period for the victory. Colin Gibson scored 22 points for the Raiders and Kris Pratt recorded his second double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Bryan Huber added 11 for County. Valley was led by John Yoxthimer, who had 23 points and 10 rebounds.

The Skinny: The Wolverines (1-4) were within in 10 at the half but the Warriors (4-1), under former Loudoun County coach Kevin Reed who took over the program this year, had four players in double digits -- Morgan Sirbaugh (17), Erin Drumheller (16), Keyaira Newman (11) and Briana Hudnall (10). Stephanie Purnell led Woodgrove with 11.

Football: Broad Run QB Jessop Throws for Three Scores, 300+ Yards in Successful Return to Lead Spartans to Playoff Win

Ashburn (Nov. 12, 2010) - The return of Broad Run High School junior quarterback Connor Jessop to the Spartans starting line-up Friday, just nine weeks after breaking his collar bone, was such a well-kept secret that first-year head coach Matt Griffis didn't even tell his own kids until the night before the game and that included his 6-year-old son Brett who went trick-or-treating as Jessop for Halloween.

"I told (the players) if I find out it is out on Facebook ... you are off the team. I looked a lot of people in the eye that I respect and I had to lie to them," said Griffis after his team sprung the "Jessop surprise" and shut down Sherando, 49-26, in the Region II Division 4 quarterfinals.

By the time Jessop took to the field for the opening coin toss it was clear he was back and after the Spartans first drive, in which the 6-foot-4 quarterback connected on 6 of 6 passes for 66 yards including a 7-yard score to Matt Preziotti, it was clear that Jessop was really back.

And by the time Jessop finished the first half with three touchdown passes on 21 of 26 for 285 yards and a TD run for good measure to lead Broad Run to a commanding 28-6 halftime lead, it was clear that Jessop was really, really back and looked every bit the strong-armed player who led Broad Run to the school's second straight state title last year as a sophomore.

Competitive Cheer: Briar Woods Repeats as Region II Champ, Broad Run Runner-up; Stone Bridge 3rd in Northern Region

(Nov. 6, 2010) - Briar Woods High School competitive cheer repeated its Region II title Saturday as the Falcons move onto the state meet where they have a chance to defend their AA state title. Broad Run was runner-up and also advances.

Stone Bridge, defending Northern Region champion, had to settle for third Saturday, but the Bulldogs will move onto the AAA state meet where they were runner-up last year.

Herndon was a surprise winner Saturday at the Northern Region meet with AAA defending state champion Fairfax runner-up. Chantilly also advance to States as fourth place.

Also moving on from Region II are third place James Wood and fourth place Sherando.

Football: Sherando turns the tables on Loudoun County

Leesburg (Sept. 17, 2010) - When Loudoun County and Sherando squared off in Stephens City during week three of the 2009 football season, the Raiders came away with a clutch 13-10 victory after Calle Brown drilled a 42-yard field goal with a little more than a minute left in regulation.

Sherando returned the favor Sept. 16 in Leesburg, scoring the go-ahead touchdown with 2:38 left on its way to a 21-14 victory over the host Raiders.

Volleyball: Loudoun County Edges Stone Bridge in 5-Game Thriller at Surebet Classic

(Sept. 14, 2010) - They sure named the Cheers Sports Classic with the right moniker as there was plenty of great volleyball to cheer about at the tournament at Loudoun County High School Saturday as the host  handed Stone Bridge its  first defeat of the season with a 3-2 thriller.

Loudoun County (5-1) prevailed 17-25, 25-21, 25-21, 20-25, 15-11 over Stone Bridge (6-1) in the first match-up of the tournament. The Bulldogs bounced back with wins over Sherando (23-25, 25-8, 25-18, 29-27) and Kettle Run (25-7, 25-11, 29-27) to finish the day 2-1.

The Raiders -- which have won three consecutive AA state titles -- suffered a letdown after the Stone Bridge win with a surprising loss to Kettle Run in three games (25-27, 20-25, 23-25) but County recovered to beat Sherando (25-18, 25-18, 25-20) to also finish the day 2-1.

Sherando salvaged its Saturday with a win over Kettle Run to leave both of those schools at 1-2.

News: Appeals to VHSL's Redistricting and Reclassification All Involve Region II Schools

2011-12 and 2012-13 R&R Appeals Summary

Monday, March 29, is the date by which the League office must receive in writing a request by any party wishing to speak in opposition to an appeal request. Football: Broad Run Steamrolls Sherando, 36-13, for Second Straight Regional Title

Ashburn (Nov. 27, 2009) - Last week the Broad Run High School defense that led the Spartans to a AA Division 4 state title in 2008 gave up 27 points to Liberty in the first round of the playoffs. On Friday the Spartans on defense were once again, well Spartan like, with Broad Run's first unit allowing Sherando just eight total yards and one first down before exiting the night with a 36-0 lead midway through the third quarter.

Broad Run brought home the 36-13 victory on the chilly late November evening for a second straight Region II title. The Spartans (12-0) have now won 26 straight games and 36 of 37 dating back to the start of the 2007 season.

T.J. Peeler was the workhorse for Broad Run Friday, carrying the ball a dozen times in the first quarter alone and 22 times in the first half. Peeler finished with 161 yards on 26 carries and three scores. Even though Peeler rushed just four times in the second half, he had the play that essentially ended the game as Broad Run recovered an onsides kick to start the third quarter and Peeler sprinted 45 yards on the next snap to make it 28-0 Broad Run.

Despite controlling the game, Broad Run led just 7-0 late in the first half -- the score coming on Peeler's up and over leap on 4th-and-1 from the 2 in the first quarter -- after two Spartan drives ended on downs, one at the Sherando 35 and the other at the Warrior 13.

Broad Run took the ball 72 yards on eight plays and scored on a Connor Jessop to Adrian Flemming 9-yard pass with 1:43 to go in the half to make it 14-0 and then the Spartans recovered an onsides kick. Flemming took a screen and went 39 yards to set up a 1-yard Jessop score with 27.7 seconds to go in the half.

With Peeler scoring just 15 seconds into the third quarter, Broad Run had found the end zone in a span of less than two minutes to turn the game from 7-0 to a 28-0 blowout. Josh Nappier's interception gave Broad Run the ball back and nine plays later Peeler scored from 10 yards out and a two-point conversion made it 36-0 with 5:56 still left in the third quarter.

Sherando recovered a Jessop fumble and scored a defensive touchdown in the fourth quarter to break the shutout and the Warriors tacked on another score with less than two minutes left in the contest.
