Football: Stone Bridge Back to Practicing on Thanksgiving with 33-14 Win Over Langley in Regional Semifinals

Ashburn (Nov. 22, 2012) – Last year the Stone Bridge High School football team had a rare Thanksgiving off after an earlier than expected exit from the playoffs but the Bulldogs were back to working out on Turkey Day after a 33-14 win over a tough Langley squad in the Northern Region Division 5 semifinals on Nov. 16.

Bulldog junior Sterling Dailey had a career-high 192 yards rushing on 28 carries and two TD runs as Stone Bridge (12-0 record) advanced to their 10th regional final in 11 seasons.

Ashburn (November 11, 2011) – Senior Stephen Trivieri rushed for four touchdowns for the second consecutive week to lead Stone Bridge High School to a 35-0 Northern Region Division 5 playoff win over Langley Friday night. The victory held special significance, as it not only brought the Bulldogs one step closer to a sixth AAA regional title in seven years, but the win was a milestone 200th career win for Bulldog coach Mickey Thompson.

Top seeded Stone Bridge (10-1) dominated the the No. 8 seed Saxons (5-6) on the ground, rushing for 203 yards in the first half alone. A strong Bulldog defense, led by Liberty District Defensive Player of the Year, junior Jonathan Allen, held the Saxons to only 47 total yards of offense in the first half as Stone Bridge built a 21-0 halftime lead.

Top-seeded Stone Bridge (10-1) will host No. 4 seed South County (8-3), a 31-0 winner over Madison Friday, next week in the regional semifinals.

Volleyball: Stone Bridge's Ryan Ackermann is Named Liberty District Player of the Year

(Oct. 30, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School junior Ryan Ackermann, who helped the Bulldogs to 20-2 regular season and perfect 7-0 mark in the Liberty District, has been named as the district Player of the Year in a vote of the coaches. Bulldog coach Jill Raschiatore was named co-Coach of the Year along with McLean's Steve Stotler.

Joining Ackermann on the first squad are teammates, senior Rachel Auerbach and sophomore Libero Sarah Fairchild. Stone Bridge sophomore Megan Bryn was named to the second team while sophomore Libby Haslett was Honorable Mention.

Boys Basketball: Stone Bridge Falls to Langley

Ashburn (Jan. 3, 2010) - A shorthanded Stone Bridge Boys basketball team -- with just 10 available on the Bulldogs 15-man roster -- fell at home Monday night to Langley, 71-55, in a Liberty District game.

The Saxons improved to 3-0 district and 5-5 overall while the Bulldogs drop to 1-2 and 2-9.

"During the first quarter, we didn't have energy. We played well in the 2nd and 3rd quarters," said Stone Bridge coach Sonny Green. "By the 4th quarter, we were worn down."

Stone Bridge was down five players due to various injuries, including sophomore Jon Allen.

The Saxons began the game quickly and ended the first quarter with a 19-9 advantage.

The Bulldogs' improved in the second quarter, trailing by 11 at the half, and cut into the lead during the third quarter to trail 52-45 headed into the final quarter. However, the hosts never recovered from the deficit and were once again outscored in the fourth quarter.

"We got behind too early," said senior guard Ryan Lowdermilk. Lowdermilk was the Bulldogs' lead scorer with 19 points. Leading the Saxons in points, also with 19, was junior guard Daniel Dixon.


Stone Bridge travels to South Lakes High School Thursday. Green hopes to limit turnovers and attack in the paint, feeding off of Jack Wohlfert and Danny Eleazer's post performances today.

"We're best when we attack the rim," said Green.

Volleyball: Heritage, Stone Bridge Take Tournament Titles; Broad Run and Loudoun County in Dulles Rematch

(Nov. 5, 2010) - The area's best high school girls volleyball teams had to work hard for their victories Thursday night as there were no sweeps with tournament titles on the line.

Heritage survived an epic give-game showdown with rival Loudoun Valley to add the Cedar Run District tournament title to their regular-season crown. Stone Bridge, after going five games with Langley a week ago, needed just four games Thursday to beat the Saxons for the Liberty District tournament title. Like the Pride, the Bulldogs had also won the regular-season crown.

And in the Dulles District, Broad Run and Loudoun County are headed for a tournament finals rematch but only after both teams dropped the first game in the semifinals with the second seed Spartans rebounding to be beat Briar Woods and the host and top seed Raiders coming back to defeat Freedom. Briar Woods and Freedom will play in the consolation finals Saturday at Loudoun County at 6 p.m. followed by the title match.

Stone Bridge put together perhaps two of its most impressive games to date as the Bulldogs jumped on Langley behind a supportive home crowd.

"I thought we were playing the best I have ever seen us play. We were so pumped up," said senior Christine Beckham who had 14 kills, 12 digs and nine service points, including five aces, in the match and was named the tournament's MVP.

Joining Beckham on the all-tournament team were senior setter Amanda Miller (33 assists, 3 blocks, 6 digs) and senior libero Amy Christensen (22 digs, 11 service pts, 5 aces).

"We played very well. They stepped it up a lot tonight," said Stone Bridge coach Jill Raschiatore. "Playing Langley, we knew we had to bring our A game."

Miller ran an offense with many options with sophomore Ryan Ackermann (9 kills, 5 digs, 4 blocks, 10 service pts, 3 aces), junior Alex Heyn (11 kills, 4 blocks) and senior Vanessa Paige (5 kills, 1 assist, 1 dig) all contributing.

"We do have a lot of weapons," said Raschiatore.

Also for Stone Bridge, sophomore Mariah Brantley was big in the backrow (10 digs, 7 service pts, 2 aces) and sophomore Haley McClure (1 kill, 3 blocks, 3 digs) and junior Chandni Chudasama (4 service pts, 1 ace) added depth.

The Pride had swept the Vikes twice in the regular season but on Thursday Valley led 1-0 and 2-1 before Heritage, before its home fans, fought back to take the fourth game and then win the fifth in exciting fashion, 18-16.

Senior Lian Bernett led Heritage with 23 kills and 20 digs to go with a solo block, 4 assisted blocks, and one assist. Junior setter Stephanie Yokoyama had a big game, notching 50 assists to go with 14 service points and 15 digs.

Football: Stone Bridge Put Fumbles Behind Them, Roll Past Langley, 50-10, to Improve to 8-0

Ashburn (Oct. 23, 2010) - There are many ways that the undefeated Stone Bridge High School football team can beat you, especially with multi-threat talents on the roster such as seniors Marcus Harris, Kyle Gouveia, Brian Rody and Spenser Rositano.

After Friday's 50-10 AAA Liberty District Homecoming win over Langley the Bulldogs improved to 5-0 in district and 8-0 overall, but the Stone Bridge coaching staff was left concerned about the ways the team -- which coughed up three fumbles in the first quarter and made key penalties during the entire evening -- could ultimately beat themselves in the playoffs.

"I saw plenty of positives tonight but against good teams you can't have the turnovers and penalties," said Stone Bridge coach Mickey Thompson which has his team just two wins away from an 8th consecutive district title and from the school's sixth undefeated regular season in eight years.

The one constant for Stone Bridge has been a defensive unit that has been lights out in 2010, allowing just two touchdowns against the first unit in eight games and is giving up an average of 5.4 points per game.

"The key for us is that we are playing really good defense and that has been covering up some inconsistencies on offense," said Thompson.

The Bulldog defense -- with Rositano intercepting two passes in the first quarter to help offset the fumbles; Gouveia taking an interception back for a touchdown in the second quarter and generally flying around the field the entire night and laying teeth-rattling hits on the Saxons; and the defensive line, led by sophomore Jonathan Allen, pressured Saxon quarterback Braden Anderson with six sacks, five in the first half -- has Stone Bridge squarely in position to capture a seventh Northern Region Division 5 title.

Girls Soccer: Stone Bridge Sweeps Liberty District Honors - Skogerboe Player of the Year, Windows Coach of the Year

(May 17, 2010) - Stone Bridge High School finished the Liberty District girls soccer season unbeaten and the Bulldogs were rewarded wtih senior Jennifer Skogerboe being named Player of the Year and Bulldog coach Joan Windows was named Coach of the Year.

Besides Skogerboe, four other Bulldogs were named first team.

Lacrosse: Stone Bridge Boys, Girls Fall in Liberty Semifinals

(May 11, 2010) - The Stone Bridge High School boys and girls lacrosse teams came close to advancing to the Liberty District finals but both teams fell in close semifinals games with the boys not able to hold a 6-goal second half lead and dropping an 18-16 shootout to Madison. The SB girls were edged by Langley, 11-10.

The Bulldog boys were ahead 4-0 against the Warhawks and it was 5-2 Stone Bridge after the first quarter. Madison chipped away at the lead and the Bulldogs led by one, 7-6, at the half. Stone Bridge opened strong in the third and scored five straight goals to take a 12-6 advantage but Madison was able halve SB's lead by the end of the third to 14-11.

Madison scored six straight goals to open the fourth quarter and led, 17-14.

Stone Bridge was led by the trio of Derek Maltz (3 goals, 5 assists), JP Giroux (5 goals, 4 assists) and Dylan Maltz (4 goals, 2 assists). James Wells also scored three times for the Bulldogs and Matt Vincent added a goal and James Esser had an assist.

In the girls game, Stone Bridge was led by Kayla Sleece (3 goals, 1 assist) and Lauren Giusti (3 goals). Brittany and Kayla Worstell each added a goal and an assist, as did Hannah Mohler. Also for SB, Kelley Galownia had an assist and Rachael Pascale scored a goal. Coral Ryan had seven saves in goal for the Bulldogs.

The Langley girls will face Madison, a 17-6 winner over Marshall in the other semifinal, in the finals. In the boys final, Madison will face Langley, which romped 18-3 over South Lakes. The finals are scheduled for May 14 at Marshall High School at 5 and 7 p.m.
