Tennis: Weather Postpones Wednesday Matches

(March 28, 2012) - More tennis matches are being postponed Wednesday as thunder continues to rumble across Loudoun.

Woodgrove vs. Tuscarora boys and girls matches have been postponed with no make-up date yet.

An afternoon thunderstorm rumbling through Ashburn has postponed the Stone Bridge High School girls tennis match with McLean. No Make-up date has been fixed yet.

Volleyball: Stone Bridge's Ryan Ackermann is Named Liberty District Player of the Year

(Oct. 30, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School junior Ryan Ackermann, who helped the Bulldogs to 20-2 regular season and perfect 7-0 mark in the Liberty District, has been named as the district Player of the Year in a vote of the coaches. Bulldog coach Jill Raschiatore was named co-Coach of the Year along with McLean's Steve Stotler.

Joining Ackermann on the first squad are teammates, senior Rachel Auerbach and sophomore Libero Sarah Fairchild. Stone Bridge sophomore Megan Bryn was named to the second team while sophomore Libby Haslett was Honorable Mention.

Girls Soccer: Threat of Weather Shifts Second Liberty Semifinal to Marshall

(May 18, 2011) - The threat of severe thunderstorms tonight has shifted the second Liberty District tournament girls soccer semifinal from Stone Bridge High School to an earlier start at Marshall High School.

Stone Bridge will still host Fairfax at 5 p.m. but the Madison vs. McLean contest will now be played at 6 p.m. at Marshall. All-district presentation will now take place between the girls and boys soccer finals on Friday at McLean High School.

Volleyball: Beckham, Miller and Christensen Make First-Team All-Liberty District

(Nov. 1, 2010) - Christine Beckham, Amanda Miller and Amy Christensen were all named All-Liberty District first team in a vote of the district's volleyball coaches last week.

Football: Stone Bridge Mauls McLean, 38-0, in Match-up of 8-0 Teams

(Oct. 29, 2010) - The Stone Bridge High School football team played a nearly flawless first half Friday as the Bulldogs mauled McLean for 38 points before the break in a match-up of teams with 8-0 records. With Marcus Harris rushing for three scores and 124 of his 161 yards, Stone Bridge left no doubt as to the top team in the Liberty District as well as Division 5 in the Northern Region if not the state.

The Bulldog defense, led by sophomore Jonathan Allen who had three sacks to add to his school record 13 on the season, held McLean to 38 yards in the first half and one first down -- all of which came on one trick play. The Bulldogs had probably their hardest-hitting game of the season, laying some vicious blocks, especially on a 53-yard punt return by Spenser Rositano that set up a 12-yard Harris TD run.

Harris had started the game with a 44-yard TD sprint as Stone Bridge opened by moving the ball 61 yards in just three plays to take a 7-0 lead only 40 seconds into the contest. After a 3-and-out, Stone Bridge marched 51 yards in nine efficient plays with Harris moving the chains almost every time he touched the ball and he finished off the drive by walking in from the 2 to make it 14-0 with 6:09 left in the first.

After Rositano's punt return -- during which Allen and another Stone Bridge player sent Highlanders flinging with big blocks -- Harris took the next snap and made it 21-0 with 39 seconds left in the first.

After an Allen sack pinned McLean inside their 20, Rositano returned a short punt 23 yards to put the ball on the McLean 24 and Brian Rody (154 yards passing on 11-23-0) hit Harris for a 9-yard pass play that then set up a 15-yard inside reverse to Adrian Thomas to make it 28-0 Stone Bridge with 10:05 still left in the first half.

McLean finally got a first down when they executed a trick play on 3rd-and-17 from their own 18 with Jimmy Ludwick taking a draw handoff from behind his back from quarterback Chase Mills. Ludwick stood frozen, almost a variation on the old Statue of Liberty play, with the ball held behind him as several Bulldogs rushed by and then he went 38 yards for McLean's biggest play of the night.

After the Bulldog defense held at their own 36 on 4th-and-2, the Bulldogs went to the spread offense with Rody completing passes to three different receivers before he did the honors from the 1 for a 35-0 with 4:03 left in the half.

Stone Bridge wasted nothing in the half as the Bulldogs turned a McLean fumble on their own 38 with 16 second left in the first half into a 38-0 lead on the strength of Rositano's school record-tying 48-yard field goal. A booming kick that was probably good from at least 53 yards.

With the clock running in the second half because of the VHSL 35-point blowout rule, Stone Bridge made the game go even faster with a monster drive of 16 plays, that included 19 snaps with three penalties, that drained more than 10 minutes off the clock. Even though the drive stalled at the McLean 1, the field position was enough to keep the Highlanders off the scoreboard, even though the Stone Bridge second defense took to the field in the final quarter.

Stone Bridge improves to 6-0 and 9-0 and has wrapped up at least a share of the Liberty District title for a sixth straight year and the Bulldogs can claim a sixth 10-0 regular season in eight years with a win next week at South Lakes. McLean, off to its best start in 25 years, slips to 5-1 and 8-1.

(May 19, 2010) - The Liberty District softball coaches voted on their all-district selections last night and Stone Bridge had four second team selections including a pair of freshmen, second base Niki Prince and outfielder Sydney Broderick.

Baseball: Stone Bridge on Senior Night Upsets No. 2 McLean, 3-2, to Finish Regular Season on High Note

(May 17, 2010) - It was more than a baseball game Friday night for Stone Bridge High School. It was Senior Night for the Bulldogs and for the last time coach Sam Plank was going to wear the uniform No. 12 to honor former assistant James Timbers who passed away before the season started after a battle with cancer. The jersey will be retired in a ceremony at the start of next season.

And the opponent was McLean, ranked No. 2 by the Washington Post in the Metro Area -- a team that hadn't lost to a Liberty District opponent in two seasons and had defeated Stone Bridge in the 2009 district finals.

With all of that at play it isn't surprising that this game couldn't be finished in one night as the game was delayed by lightning in the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs and Stone Bridge leading 3-2 after scoring a controversial run on a rundown in the third inning. When the teams got back together on a sunny Saturday afternoon, Stone Bridge reliever junior Mac West, in place of senior starter Spencer Brookbank, worked three scoreless innings, wrapping up the win by getting one of the top players in Northern Virginia, Highlander senior Riley Beiro, to hit a weak comebacker with the tying run in scoring position.

(May 17, 2010) - Stone Bridge High School finished the Liberty District girls soccer season unbeaten and the Bulldogs were rewarded wtih senior Jennifer Skogerboe being named Player of the Year and Bulldog coach Joan Windows was named Coach of the Year.

Soccer Round-up for May 13: Stone Bridge Girls Come-from-Behind to Finish Regular Season Unbeaten, Bulldog Boys Fall to McLean

Ashburn (May 14, 2010) - Despite trailing 1-0 at the half, the Stone Bridge High School girls soccer team scored twice in the second half to beat McLean, 2-1, and go undefeated in the Liberty District and finish the regular season unbeaten at 11-0-2.

The Stone Bridge boys were not as fortunate as they fell for the second time on the season, dropping a 3-1 decision at McLean.

Softball Round-up May 13: Briar Woods Wraps up Title; Broad Run, Valley Win Big; Potomac Falls Edges Heritage; SB Nipped by McLean

(May 14, 2010) - Broad Run High School, needing to win Thursday and have Park View knock off Briar Woods, in order to hold out hope for a share of the AA Dulles District title, did their end of the bargain with a 10-0 win over Freedom but the Falcons jumped on the Patriots early and cruised to an 8-1 win to wrap up the school's first ever district softball regular-season crown.

In AAA Liberty District play, Stone Bridge fell to McLean, 2-0; and in non-district play, Loudoun Valley sophomores Allie Reid and Kelsey Richardson combined to no-hit Dominion, 16-0, and Potomac Falls beat Heritage, 5-3.
