Girls Lacrosse: Woodgrove Holds D1 Signing Celebration for Olivia Becker (Liberty) and Morgan Miller (Delaware)

Purcellville (Dec. 6, 2012) - Woodgrove High School held a signing reception on Wednesday, Dec. 5 to recognize two of the program's finest in girls lacrosse, Olivia Becker (Liberty) and Morgan Miller (Delaware), who will play in college next year. This was Woodgrove’s first official signing of girls’ lacrosse players to NCAA Division I teams.

Girls Basketball: Woodgrove Regional Title Game vs. Liberty Shifted to Kettle Run

(Feb. 25, 2012) - With just over two hours to go before tip off at Liberty High School a major mechanical malfunction has caused the Eagles Region II Division 3 girls basketball title game against Woodgrove to be moved to Kettle Run High School with the start time pushed back to 7:30 p.m.

Kettle Run is located at 7403 Academic Ave. in Nokesville.

Football: Park View SR Ryan McCarter Signs with NCAA D1 Liberty

(Feb. 1, 2012) - Park View High School senior standout WR Ryan McCarter officially signed his NCAA Division I NLI Wednesday morning to play at Liberty University next year.

McCarter finished his spectacular Patriot career with 1,899 receptions on 135 receptions including 22 touchdowns. The two-time All-Dulles District first team pick set school records for most catches in a season (70), touchdowns in a season (13) and reception yards in a single game (229).

Girls Volleyball: Loudoun County Sweeps All-Region Honors with Jenna Strange Player of the Year, Jenica Matthias Coach of the Year

(Nov. 14, 2011) - Loudoun County High School girls volleyball, which swept to a sixth consecutive Region II title Saturday night, claimed the top regional honors with senior Jenna Strange named the Player of the Year and Jenica Matthias named the Coach of the Year.

Strange joined senior teammates Katrina Kirby and Libero Gabby Serafin on the first team along with Heritage senior setter Stephanie Yokoyama. Second team honors went to Heritage sophomore Sydney Busa and Potomac Falls junior Kayla Carlton.

Girls Soccer: Threat of Weather Shifts Second Liberty Semifinal to Marshall

(May 18, 2011) - The threat of severe thunderstorms tonight has shifted the second Liberty District tournament girls soccer semifinal from Stone Bridge High School to an earlier start at Marshall High School.

Stone Bridge will still host Fairfax at 5 p.m. but the Madison vs. McLean contest will now be played at 6 p.m. at Marshall. All-district presentation will now take place between the girls and boys soccer finals on Friday at McLean High School.

Baseball: Cheers/DST Wood Bat Tournament Moved to Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday

(Apr. 17, 2011) - The 2011 Cheers/DST Wood Bat Tournament has been moved to Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this coming week due to Saturday's rain.

On Monday and Tuesday at Broad Run High School pool play will take place between Broad Run, Marshall, George Mason, and Heritage.

On Monday and Tuesday at Park View High School pool play will take place between Park View, Liberty, Briar Woods, and Bishop O'Connell.

On Wednesday, the brackets will "cross over" and all games will be played at Park View for 7th place, 5th place, 3rd place, and the tournament championship.

The administration, coaching staffs, and players from Broad Run and Park View would like to thank Denny Petrella and Joe Donatello from Cheers Sports and John Lechler and Jason Bagby from DST for making an event like this possible. Without their resources, a tournament like this would not be possible

Basketball: For Pete's Sake! Potomac Falls Boys Repeats State Title as Simoneau Hits Game-Winner with 5 Seconds Left; Loudoun County Girls Fall to Liberty

Richmond (Mar. 13, 2011) - Spending most of the night on the sidelines, it was fitting perhaps that Potomac Falls High School senior Pete Simoneau was knocked back into the Panther bench as he launched his game-winning 3-point shot with five seconds left in the VHSL Division 4 boys basketball title game Saturday night.

"Once I let go of it, I knew it was going to go in," said Simoneau of the clutch shot that lifted the Panthers to a stunning 58-55 victory before a large Potomac Falls crowd that had made the trip to VCU's Siegel Center.

The 5-foot-6 super substitute Simoneau ended up with the role of a lifetime when he replaced injured Panther star Lukas Mihailovich with 2:58 left in the contest and while he -- along with the rest of the Panther deep bench -- was held scoreless to the that point, Simoneau made his five points count. They were the Panthers final five points in a magical 30-1 season , including a pair of free throws with 27 seconds left to give Potomac Falls a 3-point cushion that evaporated quickly when Hidden Valley's Taylor Walker hit a 3-pointer with 20 seconds to play.

"My heart was tested to the limit," said Potomac Falls coach Jeff Hawes after his team clinched a second straight state title -- the only two boys basketball state titles in Loudoun high school sports history. Simoneau's shot touched off a wild celebration of Panther players, coaches and fans and capped a two-year run of a 10-member senior class that saw the team lose just three contests.

"It was really a fitting ending ... it shows what a real team we are," said Mihailovich who finished with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds, despite missing half the final quarter with an ankle injury.

6-foot-7 Panther junior Greg Graves may have struggled on the offensive end, shooting 1 of 8, but he was a force inside all night and almost came away with a triple-double -- scoring 12 points with 18 rebounds and six blocks. 

"I had his back," said Graves of his reaction when Mihailovich first went out injured with 4:16 to go. The all-state senior tried to return with 3:16 to go but left 20 seconds later after hobbling badly on the ankle.

Graves took over down the stretch, completing a three-point play on a basket inside with 2:50 left, making a free throw with 2:27 to go and then sinking two pressure free throws with 1:31 play after the Titans had come all the way back from a one-time, 10-point deficit to take a 52-51 lead with 1:46 to go.

The two foul shots by Graves was followed by a key defensive possession where Panther senior Zack Curran knocked a ball in the paint loose and senior Mickey Wagenhoffer recovered it. After the Panthers dribbled away nearly 30 seconds off the clock, the Titans were forced to foul and Simoneau went to the line to shoot two, making both to set up the wild final 20 seconds.

On the game-winning shot, Simoneau came off a screen by Wagenhoffer near the 3-point line and stepped several feet behind the arc, hitting a fadeaway shot over the out-stretched arms of a Hidden Valley defender.

Brendon Chesson scored 10 for Potomac Falls which shot just 37 percent in the game (17 of 46) but the taller Panthers, thanks in large part to Graves, out-rebounded Hidden Valley, 41-27. The Panthers picked up 20 offensive boards with Graves pulling down nine.

"That kid made a great shot," said Hidden Valley coach Troy Wells. "I told him after the game, 'young man, you will remember that shot the rest of your life'."

Liberty 68, Loudoun County 55

The Loudoun County High School girls basketball team could not clinch a second state title in three seasons as Liberty, a team that fell to the Raiders by 16 points in the Region II title game two weeks earlier, turned the tables and beat the Raiders by 13 Saturday night.

JMU-recruit Jazmon Gwathmey was the difference maker as she was held to four points in the loss at Liberty but on Saturday she broke loose for 26 points and eight rebounds.

The Raiders lone senior, Brittany Batts, the school's all-time leading scorer, who had 31 in the regional title win, finished with a team-high 19 but she was bottled up most of the night by the tall and physical Eagle defense. Erica Linnemann, the hero in Wednesday's semifinals with a buzzer beater, scored 14.

Liberty pounded the Raiders on the boards, out-rebounding County, 49-30 with Ashley Lindsay grabbing 16 and Brianne Croushorn 13.

"They were playing a rough game and we couldn't finish around the basket," said Batts.

Batts finished with more than 2,000 points in her brilliant career.

"I love being a Raider ..." said Batts before breaking down in tears in the postgame press conference.

Girls Basketball: Batts Scores 31 to Lead Loudoun County to Regional Title

Bealeton (Feb. 27, 2011) - No matter the outcome of Saturday's Region II Division 4 girls basketball championship game between Loudoun County High School and host Liberty, both teams knew they were going to advance to the Division 4 state tournament as region finalists.

Loudoun County first-year coach Derek Fisher still had a message for his team before the game, "There are a lot of good players and good teams that never get a chance to play in these types of games. You have to cherish the opportunity to play in a regional championship game."

Fisher's message was well received. Loudoun County went on a 13-1 run during a four-minute span to end the first half and begin the second, turning a 22-22 tie into a 35-23 lead. Liberty made a push in the fourth quarter, pulling within seven before Raider senior Brittany Batts converted 11 of 12 free throws down the stretch to seal a 56-40 victory.

Boys Basketball: A Perfect 10! Potomac Falls Senior Class Brilliant Run at Panther Pit Snags Another Regional Title

Sterling (Feb. 27, 2011) - Forget for a moment that 6-foot-7 junior Greg Graves had a game-high 28 points, fueled by a variety of sweet moves that should have college scouts drooling, the real story Saturday Night at Potomac Falls High School was about the 10 Panther seniors as they crowned a two-year brilliant run at home with a second straight Region II Division boys basketball title.

Playing a Liberty team that they beat in last year's title game, 85-62, and defeated again in December to open the season, 82-74, the Panther seniors turned their final appearance in the Panther Pit into a 32-minute long encore as they ran the Eagles off the court, 96-58.

"I have all the respect in the world for Liberty ... but there was no way in the world that this team is losing their last game here. Not with 10 seniors playing their last game in this building," said Potomac Falls coach Jeff Hawes.

In a year in which they are trying to repeat last year's feat of becoming the only Loudoun boys basketball team in history to win a state title, the Panthers (27-1) will have to repeat their state quarterfinal win from last year as they will face Tabb for a second straight season at Robinson High School next weekend -- most likely on Saturday.

Before Potomac Falls could think about Tabb, there were tears and hugs first as family and friends engulfed the team after the regional awards ceremony. The Potomac Falls senior class -- 52-3 overall the past two seasons and unbeaten on their home floor marred only by a loss to AAA Loudoun Valley in December 2009 -- had one final act to carry out and that was cutting down the nets as a ladder was secured and the team took turns snipping a bit of net before Hawes did the final honors to cheers.

Basketball: Twin Titles as Both Loudoun County Girls, Potomac Falls Boys Claim Region II Division 4 Crowns

(Feb. 26, 2011) - It was twin Region II Division 4 titles for Loudoun basketball teams Saturday night as the Loudoun County High School girls went on the road and downed Liberty, 56-50, and Potomac Falls High School boys basketball brilliant senior class made their final appearance in the Panther Pit a memorable 96-58 blowout win over Liberty.

Loudoun County (24-4) will host Eastern View (17-9), a 42-39 loser against Grafton in the Region I final, in the AA Division 4 state quarterfinals while Potomac Falls (27-1) will take on Tabb (21-7), a 59-49 loser to King George in the Region I final, in a state quarterfinal rematch from last year. Both the Raiders and Panthers will play host at Robinson High School next weekend, most likely on Saturday.

Ashburn (Nov. 19, 2010) - The biggest play in Briar Wood High School football playoff history started off Friday like far too many of the Falcons offensive plays on the evening, looking like it might go for a loss, but then junior Alex Carter turned a busted fourth quarter bubble screen into an electrifying 65-yard touchdown.

Carter's spectacular play, with 9:32 remaining in the contest, was all a lights out Briar Woods defense needed for the hard-fought 7-0 Region II Division 4 semifinal shutout over Liberty. The win avenged a 13-10 last-minute loss that Briar Woods (10-2) suffered to Liberty (10-2) in the second week of the season and set up a highly-anticipated rematch with Ashburn neighbor Broad Run in Friday's regional title game.

The last time the two teams met in Brambleton on Oct. 1, Briar Woods snapped two-time defending state champion Broad Run's 33-game winning streak with a 20-13 win before a packed house.

"That was a big win for our school, for our program," said Briar Woods coach Charlie Pierce. "The rematch will be very intense, a backyard brawl type of thing."

For most of Friday, it was a back-and-forth punting affair on a frigid night as neither defense was willing to yield even a single point. In 10 games against non-Briar Woods opponents, Liberty had averaged 35.8 points per game but the Falcons were a sure-tackling bunch, led by senior linebacker DeVontae O'Bannion's 13 tackles, and they refused to budge, even when Liberty had better field position most of the night.

"We know that every game we play is going to be a battle. We come out with more intensity that any team we face," said O'Bannion.

Thanks to several bad snaps and the inability to move the first down markers, Briar Woods was held to a total of minus-11 yards in the first half and the Falcons first seven "drives" in the game went for: (-12), 9, 7, 0, (-14), 1 and 14.

All of that, however, changed in the blink of an eye as Carter, the son of former Washington Redskins defensive back Tom Carter, brought the home fans to their feet. Carter collected the bubble screen in the left flat, but the Liberty defensive back broke through the would-be block and appeared to be dragging Carter down for a 5-yard loss.

Carter had other designs as he broke the tackle, reversed his field and raced all the way towards the Falcons bench, picking up blockers including freshman quarterback Trace McSorley, and then Carter turned on the jets, slicing up the sidelines.

"It was supposed to be a bubble screen ... I broke the tackle and looked to the outside and I kept on running," said Carter modestly. "I saw some blockers down the field and I followed them down and scored."

Liberty had a chance to prevent Carter from getting in the end zone, with defenders in his way at the Eagle 30, but Carter, with a full head of steam, spun out of a tackle and kept on going until he scored.

"By that time I thought 'I've worked too hard to get here right now, so I'm not going to stop'," said Carter. "That has been our motto all season. Since August 1st we have been working hard, it's too late to stop trying now, we have to keep pushing."

Girls Basketball: Freedom Sends Its Message Loud and Clear in Regional Title Blowout

Charlottesville (Mar. 2, 2010) – The Freedom High School girls basketball team wanted to send a message Saturday in the Region II finals at Monticello High School as the defending VHSL Division 3 state champions felt like the match-up for the Division 4 title should have been with Dulles District rival Loudoun County and not the Evergreen District’s Liberty.

“We wanted to send a message that the way this is laid out is completely incorrect,” said Freedom coach Jason Eldredge.

Consider the message sent loud and clear as Freedom (18-5) crushed Liberty, 62-33, for a second straight regional banner. While Liberty (15-4) had played Freedom to within eight points early in the season the two Eagles had much different schedules with Freedom playing five AAA sized schools and three privates including among others highly-ranked Riverdale Baptist, Georgetown Visitation, and a Stonewall Jackson team that is in the AAA state quarterfinals.

Perhaps nothing set Freedom up for its big win Saturday as much as the rock’em, sock’em, back and forth five-game series with Loudoun County, the defending Division 4 state champion. The Eagles finished the grueling test with the Raiders with a 3-2 mark including a win in the regional semifinals that finished the Raiders season.

Twin Titles! Freedom Girls and Potomac Falls Boys Crush Liberty for Region II D4 Titles

Charlottesville (Feb. 28, 2010) - It wasn't even close as both the Freedom High School girls and the Potomac Falls High School boys crushed Liberty Saturday at Monticello High School to take home to Loudoun Region II Division 4 titles.

For defending Division 3 state champion Freedom it was a second straight regional title and for Potomac Falls it was the school's first regional title since opening in 1997.

(Feb. 27, 2010) - The Freedom High School girls and Potomac Falls High School boys basketball teams will take to the road tonight and try to bring home a pair of AA Region II Division 4 titles.

Both teams face Liberty High School in a doubleheader at neutral Monticello High School in Charlottesville (directions here). The girls tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys at apx. 7:45 p.m.

PF coach Lynn Ewald notes: We got down 10-0 and fought back to tie it going into the 4th. Couldn't overcome the deficit and missed some opportunities in the 4th quarter.
My girls fought back and I couldn't be prouder of them, but we just couldn't get over the hump. Big nights by Raven Short, Symone' Berry and Jasmin Jeffries kept us in the game and gave us a shot in the 4th quarter.

For the Record: The Panthers not only qualified for regionals for the first time but also won a regional game.

The Skinny: Lukas Mihailovich scores 24 to lead the Panthers to the school's first ever state basketball playoff appearance since the school opened in 1997. Broad Run, which fell behind 7-0 to start and never led in the contest, has been waiting 41 years for a trip to States -- since the school opened in 1969! Kevin McGaughey scored a game-high 26 for the Spartans with a valant second-half effort but BR could not overcome trailing by 15 at the half, 35-20. Brendon Chesson and Greg Graves combined for 21 for the Panthers including several key baskets. PF improves to 19-2 on the year and BR ends at 20-4.

The Skinny: The Evergreen District champion Eagles avenged a Jan. 15, 72-68 loss to Sherando, with this defensive win. Liberty started the year 0-4 against tough competition but is currently 11-7 including four straight wins.

The Skinny: Loudoun County was a hot shooting team when it beat Freedom in South Riding just five days ago but the Raiders shot just 19 percent (13 of 68) from the field Thursday as the Eagles kept alive their hopes of a second straight state title and defending Division 4 state champion LC had its year end at 19-4. Kesley Buchanan had her usual double-double to lead Freedom with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Jessica Escorza added 15 for the Eagles in the defensive struggle. Kendra Holmes, after sitting out with a sore knee in the quarterfinals, played and finished with a team-high 14 points and nine rebounds. Brittany Batts scored 13 for LC. The game was close with LC up at the half, 20-18, and Freedom up by one heading into the final quarter, 30-29. Freedom, despite 22 turnovers, improves to 17-5 on the year.

Liberty 58, Potomac Falls 50
The Skinny: For the second straight playoff game the Panthers opened cold, falling behind 10-0 in the first four minutes, but unlike at Brentsville in the quarterfinals, the Panthers were not able to come all the way back, despite tying things up heading into the final quarter. Raven Short and Symone Berry combined for 36 points for PF. Liberty, which fell at Freedom earlier this year, 61-53, improves to 15-3 on the season while PF finishes its best year ever at 13-7.
