Volleyball: Stone Bridge's Ryan Ackermann is Named Liberty District Player of the Year

(Oct. 30, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School junior Ryan Ackermann, who helped the Bulldogs to 20-2 regular season and perfect 7-0 mark in the Liberty District, has been named as the district Player of the Year in a vote of the coaches. Bulldog coach Jill Raschiatore was named co-Coach of the Year along with McLean's Steve Stotler.

Joining Ackermann on the first squad are teammates, senior Rachel Auerbach and sophomore Libero Sarah Fairchild. Stone Bridge sophomore Megan Bryn was named to the second team while sophomore Libby Haslett was Honorable Mention.

Football: Stone Bridge Bounces Back with 50-14 Win

Ashburn (Sept. 19, 2011) - The Stone Bridge High School football team suffered a rare regular-season loss a week ago against Chantilly but the Bulldogs bounced back Friday with a big 50-14 Liberty District win over South Lakes.

Stone Bridge (1-0, 2-1) took the lead immediately as senior Stan Johnson returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a score. By the time the firs quarter was over, the Bulldogs led 22-0 and they were up 36-7 at the half.

Junior quarterback Ryan Burns was 3 of 6 for 117 yards with two of those completions going for scores to Jake Kuzbel, for 19 and 58 yards.

Football: Stone Bridge Holds Off South Lakes' Challenge

Ashburn (Nov. 20, 2010) - The Stone Bridge High School football team has not been tested often this year. Following a season-opening 7-3 win at Westfield, the Bulldogs margin of victory in their next 10 games ranged from 18 to 56 points.

So when South Lakes trimmed Stone Bridge's lead to 21-15 early in the fourth quarter Nov. 19 in the Northern Region, Division 5 semifinals, the host Bulldogs found themselves facing a rare test with their season on the line.

"If you haven't been preparing for a battle and all of a sudden you are in one, it's hard to get yourself ready," Stone Bridge coach Mickey Thompson said.

The Bulldogs proved to be up to the task. Stone Bridge intercepted three passes and scored 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull away late for a 36-15 win over a spirited Seahawk squad.

"I had that feeling at one point that we were actually in trouble," Thompson said. "So any time you can rebound from that, it's something to build off of. We did respond in the second half. We did respond when we were in trouble. So those are the positives, but we have to play better certainly."

Football: Stone Bridge Finishes Fifth 10-0 Regular Season in Eight Years

(Nov. 6, 2010) - When Stone Bridge High School football coach Mickey Thompson was asked a week ago if this was his most talented Bulldog team in the 11 years since he started the powerhouse program in Ashburn, he hesitated, smiled, and then said: "They are just like any of my other undefeated regular season teams if they go 10-0."

That is a luxury the Bulldogs have as Stone Bridge did indeed finish 10-0 with a 49-13 win at South Lakes Friday. The 2010 squad joins 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2008 as unbeaten regular season teams. It is interesting to note that the 2005, 2007 and 2009 -- all teams with one loss in the regular season -- advanced to the state title game.

The Bulldogs have also now claimed six consecutive Liberty District titles since moving up from AA to AAA classification, going 41-1 in the regular season against Liberty foes since 2005.

Friday's 42-7 halftime lead led to yet another running clock situation and the Bulldogs can make their case as Stone Bridge's toughest team ever, certainly on defense where they set the school record for fewest points allowed in a 10-game season, with 56. The previous record was set in 2003, with 70 points

While Marcus Harris' streak of consecutive 100-yard rushing games ended at 10 Friday as he had 62 total on 13 carries, including two second quarter runs as Stone Bridge piled up 28 points in 12 minutes, the senior running back has 1,298 total yards this season and 25 TDs on just 160 carries.

Offensively, with Harris on the ground and Brian Rody's passing attack, the Bulldogs have gone over 4,000 yards of total offense this season -- averaging a whopping 417 yards per game.

Rody had the passing game on Friday with three TD tosses in the first half including a 75-yarder to big play specialist Spenser Rositano. J.J. White and Stan Johnson also caught TDs as Rody threw for 198 yards on 9 of 14 with just his second interception on the season.

South Lakes trailed 35-0 in the first half before returning a kickoff to break the shutout.

Stone Bridge freshman quarterback Nick Azzarita threw for a fourth quarter touchdown on 2 of 4 for 51 yards. Azzarita is next in line behind Rody -- though Kyle Gouveia can also step in to play quarterback for the Bulldogs -- since sophomore phenom Ryan Burns -- who had a college offer already from Boston College prior to his first varsity action -- is out of the season after injuring himself earlier in the year in the win over Thomas Jefferson.
