Ashburn (Jun3, 4, 2011) - The Broad Run High School baseball team rallied from a 6-1 deficit to defeat visiting Kettle Run High School, 11-7, to advance to the Region II championship today in at Broad Run at 6 p.m. By virtue of their victory the Spartans are assured of a place in the AA state tournament for the second time in the last four years.
Spartan sophomore AJ Powell started on the mound for the Spartans and threw 5.1 innings on the night. Powell allowed seven runs on nine hits while striking out three batters on the evening. Powell left the game with the score tied at 7-7. Dulles District Player of the Year Taylor Clarke (Towson University) picked up the win in relief retiring all five hitters he faced striking out one. With the win, Clarke improves his record to 9-1 on the season.
Offensively, the Spartans' sophomores provided the power in the lineup tonight. Sophomore Joe Delahaba hit a two-run Home Run in the bottom of the second inning. Powell hit a two-run Home Run in the third inning that put the Spartans up 7-6. In the sixth inning, with the scored tied at 7 apiece, Delahaba drove in another run and Powell drove in two more. On the night, Connor Jessop, Patrick Dawson, and Delahaba had two hits apiece. Powell finished with 3 hits on the night.
The Spartans host Potomac Falls on Saturday in the Region II championship game. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. The first round of the state tournament will be held on Tuesday. The location of that game will be determined after the championship game Saturday night.
