Baseball: Potomac Falls Rolls Into Region II Finals Behind Rogers, Clinches Third Straight State Bid

Orange (June 3, 2011) - The Potomac Falls High School baseball team went into Orange on Thursday to face a William Monroe team that was 20-1 and the Panthers punched their ticket to the Region II Championship game and a spot in the AA state quarterfinals. Behind the over powering pitching of Jackson Rogers and a 5-run third inning the Panthers sealed a return trip to the state playoffs for a third consecutive year.

Rogers dominated on the mound racking up 10 strikeouts and only giving up 3 hits as he improved his record to 10-0 and is the current All-Met strikeout leader . The Panthers erupted for five runs in the third inning and that was all the support Rogers needed.


Matt Hoover led off the inning with a double to center field and scored on Ben Sweger’s double down the left field line. Sweger advanced to third on Ryan Mahoney’s single and scored when Rogers singled to left. Mahoney was then knocked in my Ryan Miller’s double down the left field line. Michael Lascomb followed with an RBI groundout and Miller scored on Colin Deely’s single to left.

The Panthers recorded seven hits in the inning and had four consecutive hits.

The Dragons tried to mount a comeback in their half of the inning when Jordan Gentry singled and scored on Logan Forloines triple to left, but Rogers buckled down and struckout Ryan Morris to end the threat.

The Panthers will now travel on Saturday for the Region II Championship game to either Kettle Run or Broad Run, who play on Friday at Broad Run. Both teams in the championship game automatically receive a berth in the state quarterfinals with the winner hosting the contest.
