Boys Soccer: South Riding Native Foss Helps D.C. United Academy Secure U-16 Mid-Atlantic Division Title

Washington, D.C. (June 20, 2011) - D.C. United’s U-16 and U-18 Youth Academy teams secured top honors in Mid-Atlantic Division regular season play a week ago, as both sides finished in first place in their respective divisions. This marks the first time in club history that the U-16 and U-18 squads earned first place during the same campaign, securing automatic berths into the U.S. Soccer Development Academy National Playoffs.

The U-16’s (16-6-5, 9-3-0) won both of their weekend matches behind four goals from South Riding native Patrick Foss, emphatically defeating FC Delco 5-1 on Saturday, June 11 and then beating PA Classics 3-0 on Sunday, June 12.

Foss scored three of his four weekend goals in the 5-1 drubbing of FC Delco. The other goals in the match were provided by Rafael Fagundo and Kennedy O’Shea, with two assists coming from Collin Martin. United secured a shutout the following day against PA Classics with goals from O’Shea, Foss, and Martin.

The U-18’s (14-6-7, 8-2-2) struggled to find a rhythm on Saturday, losing to F.C. Delco 1-0. However, the Black-and-Red regained their form the following day with a 3-1 victory versus PA Classics to round out the regular season.

Marcus Salandy-Defour, Tyler Rudy, and Brad Vorv each found the back of the net in United’s 3-1 defeat of PA Classics on Sunday.

Both sides are scheduled to leave for postseason play in Dallas on June 23, with the National Playoffs set to begin at Pizza Hut Park, the home of FC Dallas. Seeding for the National Playoffs is determined by overall record, with eight groups of four teams aiming to advance to the Development Academy National Finals at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis. The top team from each group in Dallas will advance to the National Finals, to be played during the week of July 9 through July 16.
