Girls Soccer: Broad Run, Heritage and Woodgrove All Advance to State Semifnals

(June 8, 2011) - 3-time defending AA girl soccer state champion Broad Run High School advancing to the state semifinals in Radford with an easy 5-1 win over Jamestown Tuesday did not raise many eyebrows.

On the other hand, first-year Woodgrove, a school with no seniors and the No. 6 seed in the Dulles District, winning 4-1 on the road at Warhill to advance to Radford was certainly surprising.

However, what was really shocking Tuesday was Heritage's 3-2 win in penalty kicks Tuesday in Richmond at previously unbeaten Deep Run. The Pride, with eight losses on the year, advance to the AAA state semifinals Friday at Westfield High School while Deep Run, ranked No. 5 in the country in ESPN Rise's latest Fab50 poll, is done.

Loudoun, with four teams advancing to the state semifinals last year, took home two state titles with Stone Bridge winning the AAA crown and Broad Run completing the trifecta in AA.

Broad Run 5, Jamestown 1
Ellie Zoepfl scored in the first 48 seconds and Broads Run had three goals in hand in the opening 10 minutes as they cruised into the state semifinals. Zoepfl and Cassie Smith each scored twice in the big first half for Broad Run (22-1).

The Spartans face Jefferson Forest at 4 p.m. Friday in Radford.

Woodgrove 4, Warhill 1
Woodgrove sophomore Sarah Hardison continued her torrid postseason -- she has a dozen goals since the end of the regular season -- with two goals to lead Woodgrove to the win. Also scoring for Woodgrove: Victoria Perry and Bergen Elkjer.

Woodgrove (12-10-2) faces Blacksburg at 2 p.m. at Radford Friday.

Heritage 2, Deep Run 2 (20T, Pride advances on PKs, 5-3
For the second time this postseason, Caitlin Kick had the winning penalty kick to clinch the victory for Pride. She did it earlier in the Northwest Region semifinals.

Kick also scored in the first half to put the Pride (13-8) ahead in the first half. Deep Run came back to take a 2-1 lead in the second half before freshman Natalie Perussault tied it up.

After two overtimes, 20 minutes of extra play, it was still tied and went to penalty kicks were Heritage won, 5-3.

Heritage will face Frank Cox on Friday at Westfield at 3 p.m.
