2010-2011 TEAM WOODGROVE Athletic Department Awards:

At the end of each academic year, Woodgrove High School Athletic Department identifies the Wolverine Female and Male Athletes of the Year. The winners of the Outstanding Athlete Award are required to participate on at least one Varsity Team, end the season in good standing, and demonstrate outstanding accomplishments in their respective sport or sports. The nominations and selections are by the Woodgrove High School Varsity Head Coaches.

This year’s recipient of the Outstanding Female Athlete Award played both Volleyball and Lacrosse. As a volleyball player, she was a team leader by example, energizing her team by giving 100% each day in practice, and culminating her season by receiving the Coaches’ Award given for effort, spirit, and selflessness. As a lacrosse player, few are her equal. She leads the Washington Metro area public schools in scoring, with an unheard of 109 goals, as well as 54 assists. She was a First Team All Dulles District selection. She has helped to lead her team to the AA Regional Championship game, as well as the State Tournament in Woodgrove’s first year of existence. The daughter of Bob and Joy Fuller, Ellen Fuller.

This Year’s recipient of the Outstanding Male Athlete Award played basketball for the Wolverines. His personal improvement throughout the season mirrored that of his team. Though the team did not enter the district tournament with a high seed, they pulled together and were playing very well. Led by his scoring they reached the tournament championship, and also qualified for regional play. He led the team in scoring with a 26 point average, was a first team All Dulles District selection, Dulles District Player of the Year, and an All Region selection as well. His scoring average ranked him 3rd in the Washington Metro area. He scored 38 points against Monticello in the Regional quarterfinal game, then 41 points in the Regional semi-final game against Fluvanna for one of the finest performances in recent tournament memory. He is out of school today participating in a workout for the Yale basketball program, one of many schools interested in recruiting him. The son of Sam and Deborah Gilson, Brad Gilson.

Our next awards are for the Wolverine Female and Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. These athletes are required to have participated in at least two varsity sports, demonstrate loyalty and dedication to the athletic program, and maintain a minimum of a 3.5 GPA. The nominations and selections are by the Woodgrove High School Varsity Head Coaches.

This year’s recipient of the Wolverine Female Scholar-Athlete Award participated in three sports, running Cross Country in the Fall, Swimming in the Winter, and Outdoor Track in the Spring. She was a captain in both cross country and track, was Dulles District second team in cross country, first team in track, and will be leaving later this morning to run in this weekend’s AA State track meet in Harrisonburg. Her 4.39 GPA ranks her 8th in this year’s Junior class. The daughter of Anthony and Theresa Crowley, Michele Crowley.

This year’s recipient of the Wolverine Male Scholar-Athlete Award participated in two sports. As a member of the basketball team, he ran the show as the team’s point guard, orchestrating the offense and distributing the ball. He was often responsible for defending the opposing team’s best ball handler, and you could see him diving for loose balls every game. As a midfielder in Lacrosse, he was the same type of player, able to handle the ball, but playing with an intensity that helped in setting the tone for his teammates. A captain in both sports, he was always ready to do whatever it takes to compete on the field, and in the classroom, carrying a GPA of 3.91. The son of Brent and Rhonda Wells, Brendan Wells.
