Ashburn (June 4, 2011) - The Broad Run High School girls soccer team clinched their fifth consecutive Region II title with a convincing 5-1 win over Dulles District rival Woodgrove Friday night.
The Wolverines are no strangers to the Spartans who have played each other four times this season including this year’s District championship game.
The Spartans controlled the tempo from the onset and took the lead in the 8th minute after senior captain Ellie Zoepfl found the back of the net from 35 yards out.
With the Spartans holding a 1-0 lead at halftime, they went to work in the second half scoring four goals in a 7-minute span to put the game away. Goals were scored by Cassie Smith, Whitney Church, Zoepfl and Christie Belz.
The Spartans out-shot the Wolverines in the game, 22-6.
First year Woodgrove would not counter until late in the game when the Wolverines scored in the 77th minute on an Ashley Bonner goal after the Spartans had cleared their bench.
The Spartans (21-1) begin their quest for a fourth consecutive AA state championship on Tuesday when they host Jamestown.
