Like all the semifinals tonight, the winners will clinch a state tournament bid as each region sends two onto States and the loser will have their seasons end just short of a dream. It' a give that at least two more AA teams will join Tuscarora as their are all-Dulles District boys and girls soccer finals scheduled with the Potomac Falls boys at Broad Run and the Freedom girls at Woodgrove.
In another soccer game locally, three-time defending state champion Broad Run will host Handley. In softball, Woodgrove hosts Goochland and Briar Woods travels to Orange in a match-up of top teams. In baseball, Potomac Falls is on the road, playing William Monroe at Orange. Broad Run's game with Kettle Run in Ashburn has been pushed back to Friday as Kettle Run has graduation tonight (think about the extra beach time!).

Potomac Falls 7, Skyline 3
The Skinny: The Panthers travelled to Bing Crosby Stadium in Front Royal to take on Skyline HS and their ace Luke Pingley. Even though Skyline finished the season at 12-9, Pingley was 11-0 and the Hawks were confident that they would take care of the Panthers. Potomac Falls had a little different agenda on their minds as they are trying to three peat as Regional Champions.
Ben Sweger led off the game with a seven pitch walk and promptly stole second. He advanced on a fielder’s choice and scored when shortstop Chaz Rutherford dropped Ryan Miller’s fly ball for an error. The Panther’s sent Ryan Mahoney to the mound and he cruised through the first throwing 6 pitches. However, the second inning was a different story as Pingley led off with a double to right and moved to third on Ty Helmick’s single. Ryan Miller then bobbled a ball at third and Pingley scored. Mahoney then got ahead of Nick Helmick but got a fastball up and Helmick hit a double of the wall in center to score both runners and give Skyline a 3-1 lead.
The Panthers got one back in the third on a single by Sweger. After stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch, Jackson Rogers knocked him in with a groundout making it 3-2.
Potomac Falls broke the game open in the fourth when Colin Deely and Sam Bass drew consecutive walks. This ended Pingley’s night and reliever Joe Bass was not received kindly. Tyler Caldwell sacrificed the runners over to second and third before Deely scored on a wild pitch. Ben Sweger then stepped to the plate and deposited a 2-1 fastball over the centerfield wall for a 2 run homerun and a 5-3 lead.
In the fifth, Jackson Rogers hit a Bass fastball over the netting in centerfield for a homerun and was followed one batter later by Michael Lascomb’s homerun to right for a 7-3 lead. With this support, Ryan
Mahoney cruised through the Hawks lineup recording many outs on first pitch balls put into play. Mahoney finished the complete game victory with 4 strikeouts and no walks to go with 4 singles and a double.
Potomac Falls will now take on William Monroe on Thursday at William Monroe at 6:00.
Broad Run 7, Sherando 0
The Skinny: For a third consecutive season the Broad Run Spartans and Sherando Warriors faced off in Regional baseball playoff action. After splitting with each other the last two seasons, the Spartans were able to take the "rubber match" with a convincing 7-0 victory in Ashburn tonight.
Dulles District Player of the Year Taylor Clarke (Towson University) was outstanding on the mound for the Spartans going the distance to improve his pitching record to 8-1 on the season. Clarke struck out 4 Warrior batters on the evening, scattered three singles, and walked none. No Warrior runner reached 2nd base on the evening.
Offensively, the Spartans built a big lead early and never looked back scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning on three consecutive singles by Junior Andrew Seigel, Junior Conor Jessop, and Senior Shea Bargiel. Later in the inning, Senior Patrick Dawson singled to load the bases, Sophomore Joe Delahaba hit a bases-clearing double, and Chris Johnson added an RBI double as well. The Spartans added one more run in the 4th inning to finish their scoring for the evening.

The Skinny: Junior Macy Jones fired a two-hitter with 16 strikeouts, and senior Kristina Karagiorgis knocked in four runs as Briar Woods posted a convincing 11-0 win over Louisa County in the quarterfinals of the Region II Tournament Tuesday night in Ashburn.
The Falcons, who extended their school-record winning streak to 14 games to improve to 21-3 overall, will visit Orange County (21-1) in the region semifinals Thursday at 6 p.m. Briar Woods is the lone team to defeat the Hornets this season, posting a 5-1 road win April 30.
Tuesdayâs quarterfinal game was played in a scorching heat, and Jones' arm and the Falcon bats were equally as hot as the temperatures that reached into the high 90s. Jones retired the first 12 Lion hitters in order and allowed an infield single in the fourth and a two-out single in the sixth. Meanwhile, the
Falcon offense pounded out 14 hits, with Jones and Karagiorgis recording three hits each.
Briar Woods jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, added single runs in the third and fourth and then blew the game open with a seven-run fifth.
In the first, senior Jillian Olson and Jones hit back-to-back one-out singles, and both moved up on a passed ball. Karagiorgis then opened her big night at the plate with a two-run single.
In the third, Jones singled with one out and raced home when Karagiorgis crushed a double off the outfield fence. The Falcons made it 4-0 in the fourth when senior Alex Fierszt reached
on a fielderâs choice and scored on a triple by freshman Casey Forbes. In the fifth, Briar Woods sent 11 batters to the plate in a seven-run outburst. Karagiorgis was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and senior
Kasey Ball followed with a double to plate Karagiorgis. Sophomore Lynn
Brantley reached on an infield single to give the Falcons runners at the corners, and freshman Kacie Kondrotis hit a sacrifice fly to score Ball. Freshman Caroline Fowler then came through with a single, and Fierszt reached on a fielderâs choice to drive in Brantley for a 7-0 lead. Forbes walked to load the bases, and a wild pitch allowed Fowler to score and Fierszt and Forbes to move up. Jones made it a 10-0 Falcon lead when she singled to plate Fierszt and Forbes, and Karagiorgis capped her stellar evening with a single to score Jones with the game's final run.
Louisa had its best scoring opportunity in the fourth, putting runners on first and second on an error, a fielderâs choice and an infield single. However, Jones worked out the jam with a strikeout. Karagiorgis finished 3-for-3 with two singles, a double and four runs driven in., while Jones was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Ball and Fowler added two hits each.

Broad Run played cross-town rival Briar Woods, the only team to have defeated the Spartans this season in Regional action tonight. This time, it was the Spartans who exacted a bit of revenge with a convincing 3-1 win at Broad Run.
The Falcons struck first on a Lina Granados shot 5 minutes into the first half. But the Spartans would tie it up in the 27th minute on a corner kick from Whitney Church to Cassie Smith and later take the lead on a perfectly placed through ball from Ellie Zoepfl to Dani Dangremond who beat the oncoming keeper. In the second half, the duo of Church and Zoepfl would team up for the fifth time this season to find the back of the net off a corner kick.
The Spartans (19-1) will face Handley in a semifinal game to be played Thursday at Broad Run.
