High School Sports Year in Review: Spring 2013 - Playoff Success Continues into June

This is the third and final part of a 3-part series by Viva Loudoun looking at the 2012-13 high school sports season:

(July 2, 2013) - Woodgrove girls soccer claimed the only state title in the spring but several other Loudoun schools came oh so close including both the Woodgrove and Stone Bridge softball teams, finishing state runner-up, as did the Briar Woods boys tennis team.

(May 25, 2013) - It was a huge night of high school playoff sports Friday, May 24 with the Tuscarora Boys soccer, Potomac Falls baseball and Woodgrove softball all claiming Dulles District tournament titles. The Woodgrove girls won the AA Northern Sectional title and the Stone Bridge baseball and softball teams advanced to the Northern Region quarterfinals.

The Broad Run softball team had its season end in the Northwest Region tournament and the Briar Woods boys tennis team lost in the Region II finals but will still advance to the AA state tournament:

Spring Sports: Playoff Scores for May 22

(May 23, 2013) - The Loudoun Valley girls lacrosse, Dominion boys lacrosse and Briar Woods boys tennis all clinched state tournament spots on Wednesday, while two local lacrosse games -- Woodgrove at Loudoun County boys and Tuscarora at Woodgrove girls -- with States on the line were suspended by the weather and will resume tonight.

Championships were won as well as the Loudoun County boys took the Region II track and field meet to highlight a great showing by the Dulles District and Freedom's Alex Cragg not only won the AAA Northwest Region boys tennis singles title but teamed with Brian Park to take the doubles championship as well:

(May 22, 2013) - It was a good night for the No. 3 seeds in the Dulles District tournament as three of four No. 3 seeds won on the road to advance to the Dulles District finals: Briar Woods boys soccer, Woodgrove girls soccer and Heritage baseball.

The only 1 vs. 2 Dulles finals match-up will be Briar Woods softball at Woodgrove Thursday. The other finals have Heritage baseball at Potomac Falls; Woodgrove girls soccer vs. Briar Woods at John Champe High School; and Briar Woods boys soccer at Tuscarora.

In the Northern Region girls soccer tournament, Stone Bridge easily advanced with a 5-0 win over Stuart. It was a night for the high seeds as the home teams won 15 of 16 contests in the Northern Region boys and girls tournament. On the girls side it wasn't even close with a combined score of 25-2 for the winners. The lone upset: T.C. Williams boys edged Robinson, 4-3.

And the Broad Run boys lacrosse team clinched a state tournament spot and trip to the AAA Northwest Sectional finals with a 10-9 comeback win at Colonial Forge. The Broad Run girls just missed the same thing, falling on overtime at Osbourn Park, 14-13.
