(Sept. 21, 2011) - Heritage High School and Loudoun Valley High School will likely have student enrollments at end of this month that would place them among the smallest Division 3 schools in Region II but because the Virginia High School League uses numbers from the spring -- when the two schools had full senior classes that hadn't shifted yet to new schools Tuscarora and Woodgrove -- the Pride and Vikings have been placed in the larger Division 4 for football and basketball playoffs.
The schools filed an appeal with the VHSL to move down to Division 3 but that appeal died today, not even getting a vote, as it lacked a second from the floor.

Not only did HHS get put in a bad spot by the 2 year cycle last time by being triple A with AA numbers , now with probably the lowest enrollment in the county they are Div 4. One of a few things wrong with VHSL, would love for it to just be the number of students in the building on day 1, that way there are no 'fudging' of numbers from any school. Maybe if we had an impartial third party to look at the enrollments of schools. Hopefully their teams keep having succes this year despite playing schools with hundreds more kids.
ReplyDeleteNumbers on day 1 would be great! I'm sure that would have put Briar Woods in AAA where they should be.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately the Divisional numbers which are done on a yearly basis, only serve to divide up A, AA and AAA into two divisions each ... and there is no statewide cutoff number, D3 and D4 in AA for example is based on the midway point between all schools in Region II ... such that a region with smaller school populations could have D4 schools that are much smaller than Region 2 D4 schools and vice verse ...
ReplyDeleteA, AA and AAA is assigned based on the Sept. 30 number at the end of this month based on the realignment and reclassification plan that will be approved next spring but won't go into affect until the 13-14 and 14-15 two-year cycle ... the plan needs a full year of advanced approval in order for schools to realign ....
The issue of D3 vs. D4, however, is revisited each year with numbers taken in the spring for the falling school year so Valley and Heritage can expect D3 in a year ...
I understand what you are saying about the AA and AAA. My question is how 3 teams that are division 3 are larger than LV and HHS but they are division 4. From my understanding, they are substantially larger as well. Not sure how that is not an easy issue to resolve when all these teams come from not only same region, but same district. I understand there will never be equality throughout the state, but in the same district is that not an easy fix?
ReplyDeleteIn the end, unfortunately, it may have come down to schools worried that they would get pushed from D3 up to D4 in place of Heritage and Valley if those 2 got moved down ... I don't think there was support within Region II for Valley and Heritage and that essentially killed their chances in front of the VHSL executive committee ...
ReplyDeleteThat is unfortunate , it is a shame some schools would do what is 'right' only when it benefits them. If this is about the kids , what lessons are we teaching by changing the rules to suit your needs? Is that the definition of cheating?
