Volleyball: The Skinny for Sept. 1 and Sept. 6 Games

(Sept. 7, 2011) - 4-time defending state champion Loudoun County High School has opened 2011 with four straight wins including victories in the last week over teams that advanced to the state quarterfinals last year, Heritage and Freedom.

The Raiders are in a tie with Briar Woods, both at 3-0, for the Dulles District lead. Heritage is the only team to take a set off of the Raiders this season.

Stone Bridge, AAA state runner-up last year, has opened 3-0, with wins over Briar Woods and Freedom. The Bulldogs and Raiders will settle the question of Loudoun's top team on Sept. 26 when they meet in a big non-district match in Leesburg.

Briar Woods def. Potomac Falls, 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-23)
The Skinny: Falcons improve to 3-0 in Dulles District with come-from-behind win over Panthers. Briar Woods first-year coach Jose Gonzalez said that his team fell behind in the fourth set but came back with a good service game and couple of big blocks in the middle by sophomore Lindsey Boerger and freshman Lauren Mooney. Senior Jamie Wiger led BWoods with 11 kills and Josie Lucernoni had nine digs.

The Skinny: Vikes sweep in Purcellville rivalry game. The Vikes won the JV match in three, while Woodgrove took the freshman match in three.

Tuscarora def. Park View, 3-0 (25-16, 25-6, 25-13)
The Skinny: The Huskies chalk up their first win on the season after some very competitive losses. Julia Walsh led Tuscarora with 11 assists and Sydney Early had eight kills

Non-District
Broad Run def. Oakton, 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-21)
The Skinny: Spartans sweep Cougars in AAA action. Mallory Brickerd led Broad Run with 10 kills, 11 digs and an ace. Brenna Sullivan added four aces and had 11 assists. Molly Maloney registered 15 assists and had two kills, while Taylor Austin finished with 22 digs and an ace.

Loudoun County def. Freedom, 3-0 (25-9, 25-22, 25-18)
The Skinny: The Raiders came out swinging on their way to a sweep over AAA Freedom Tuesday night in Leesburg). County was led by Jenna Strange (9 kills, 9 digs, 5 points, 1 ace), Katrina Kirby (8 kills, 5 blocks, 4 digs, 4 points, 2 aces), Taylor Huewe (8 kills, 4 blocks, 1 dig), Nicole Orndorff (4 kills, 10 points, 2 digs, 1 ace), Maggie Phillips (2 kills, 3 digs, 3 points, 2 blocks), Quinn (2 kills), Jane Feddersen (2 digs, 1 block), Jordan Leiter (15 assists, 2 kills, 7 points, 2 aces, 2 digs), Megan Fox (15 assists, 4 points, 2 aces, 2 digs), Gabby Serafin (15 digs, 2 assists), Kelsey Slack (6 digs, 8 points, 3 aces). The Raiders improved to 4-0 (3-0) on the season.

The JV Raiders swept the Eagles 2-0 (25-13, 25-12), while the Freshmen also cruised to a victory 2-0 (25-13, 25-5). The Lady Raiders return to action Thursday as they host Tuscarora in a return to district matches.

Briar Woods def. Tuscarora, 3-1 (24-26, 25-22, 25-22, 25-23)
The Skinny: The Falcons held off a determined Huskies squad to move to 2-0 in Dulles District. For Tuscarora: Sydney Early had 12 kills and Margaret von Wodtke added 11. Allison Ford had eight kills for the Huskies.

Loudoun Valley def. Dominion, 3-1
The Skinny: Vikes bounce back from a loss at Loudoun County on Tuesday by beating Titans in four.

The Skinny: It what figures to be the battle for first place in the Dulles District, Loudoun County defeated Leesburg rival Heritage in four sets Thursday. The Raiders extended their match winning streak to 27 with the key victory.
