The Skinny: Vikes report that they defeated Dominion High School in varsity baseball last night by the score of 12 - 0 in 5 innings. Will Reed picked up his second win of the season by pitching a complete game 3 hitter. Reed allowed 0 runs on 3 hits while walking 4 and striking out 6 batters. 

The offensive attack was lead by Brandon Grayson who was 3 - 4 with a home run and 5 RBI and Blake Southerland who was 1 - 2 with a home run and 3 RBI. Trey McDyre was 1 - 2 with 2 RBI, while Chad Fletcher was 1-2 with a double and Sam Urban was 1-3.

The Skinny: GameChanger stats show that TJ, a program that went 0-14 in Liberty District last year, shocked the defending district champion Bulldogs in Stone Bridge's season opener. Stone Bridge almost had as many errors (4) as hits (5) with Bulldog hits collected by Jake Kuzbel, Marcus Schreiber, Matt Hough, Aaidan Donovan and Ty Percherke.

The Skinny: GameChanger stats show the Spartans lost a 4-run lead on the road. Broad Run had nine hits with Joe Delahaba (2 RBIs, 2B) and Michael Kennedy (2B) with two each.

The Skinny: Briar Woods handed Woodgrove its first defeat since the 2011 season. Woodgrove went 24-0-1 last season, winning the AA state title, with the tie coming early in the season to Briar Woods. The Lady Falcons opened the scoring in the 1st half with a goal from Kira Warner assisted by Emma Quirk . Briar Woods scored in the 2nd half from a free kick from Rayven Conner then went on to win the fierce game against there district foe. The defense was lead in the back by Lauren Kelly and Nikki Batt also goalie Tori Riopelle who did a great job tonight in the net !

The Skinny: Raiders lax reports that due to late winter snow and closed schools for PWC, Loudoun County Girl’s traveled to Patriot HS on Tuesday March 19th to make up their Monday game. Though the Lady Raiders went from hosting to visiting, they were able to remain successful with a final score of LC 18 – PHS 11. Scoring for the Raiders: Senior captain Haley Knudsen (5 g 4 a) Juniors Megan Norris (2 g), Alex Lord (2 g) and Rachel Conway (1 g), Sophomore Erica Beal (3 g, 1 a) and Freshman Katie Orrison (5 g., The defense held strong, led by Goalie, Maddy Wheeler ( 11 saves) with assistance from Senior Ashlee Bowers and Freshman Jessi Rowell . The Lady Raiders will host Potomac Fall HS on Thursday at 6:00.

The Skinny: Will Reed pitched a 2 hitter giving up 2 infield hits while striking out 8 in 5 inning complete game. Reed did not walk a batter and was in complete control of the game while throwing only 65 pitches. Reed also had 2 doubles on the night to go along with his outstanding pitching.

Blake Southerland lead the offensive attack with a 2 run HR and a triple on the night in 2 at bats while Danny Pugh collected 2 hits going 2 -3 on the night.

Basketball: The Skinny on Friday Night's Schedule

(Jan. 13, 2012) - Teams will be looking to finish strong before heading into their midterm break which starts after Saturday's schedule.

The Skinny: Can the Falcons tame WG's Brad "Field Golazo" Gilson who dropped a Loudoun record 54 points on Park View this season? Can the Wolverines stop BW's point guard dynamo Myles Tate, who can beat you off the dribble or from NBA 3-point range? Woodgrove at 5-3 in Dulles District needs this win to stay on the heals of Potomac Falls (6-2) and Loudoun Valley (8-1). Briar Woods (6-0) needs this win to stay perfect in the district.

Freedom at Broad Run, 7:30
The Skinny: BR (2-4 in district) and Freedom (1-4) have taken their lumps thus far in the tough Cedar Run. Tonight they get to take it out on each other. Nigel Johnson is a scoring machine for the Spartans.

Dominion at Potomac Falls, 7:30
The Skinny: Park View's Ryan McCarter went for 44 against the Titans so PF's Greg Graves, with 44 and 31 (yes 31!) rebounds against Park View, could really do some damage tonight in the Panther Pit.

Heritage at Park View, 7:30
The Skinny: Big game in the middle of the standings as one of these two teams will climb to 5-5 in Dulles and the other drops to 4-6. McCarter is the key. Pride have proven they can play with any team in Dulles.

Loudoun County at Loudoun Valley, 7:30
The Skinny: There was a time when this was THE rivalry in the county but things have cooled a bit with the new schools opening in Leesburg and Purcellville. Valley's zone defense will look to clamp down on Raider Michael Anderson. LC must stop the Yox ... John Yoxthimer.

TJ at Stone Bridge, 7:30
The Skinny: A battle of teams 1-4 in the Liberty ... look for Bulldogs to bust out a 20-point plus victory ... yes, you read that here first!

The Skinny: Woodgrove has proved a solid No. 2 to LC thus far in the Dulles at 8-1. Briar Woods is at .500 (4-4). Wolverines like to push the pace.

The Skinny: Freedom isn't used to its 5-11 mark but has had a tough schedule so expect them to run away in this opener of the DH.

Potomac Falls at Dominion, 7:30
The Skinny: Dominion at 2-7 in Dulles can move into a tie with neighbor Potomac Falls (3-7). Both teams have been playing games closer than their marks indicate.

Park View at Heritage, 7:30
The Skinny: Is Park View's recent string of wins for real? We find out more tonight against a Pride team that has struggled a bit in the new year.

Loudoun Valley at Loudoun County, 7:30
The Skinny: County will have no problem emptying its bench against the winless Vikes.

Stone Bridge at TJ, 7:30
The Skinny: The top of the Liberty is a bruising battle so expect a Stone Bridge team, licking its wounds at 3-2 in district, to take out its frustrations on a TJ with just two wins on the season and none in district.

The Skinny: Ryan McCarter struck for 44 against the Titans in Park View's win so Raider Michael Anderson, who had 43 this season, could have a big night. Titans are 1-4 in Dulles, Raiders 3-3.

The Skinny: This is a fun match-up with McCarter of PV facing Woodgrove's Brad Gilson - both high-scoring seniors. Wolverines are 3-2 in Dulles, Pats are 3-3. Woodgrove did play Tuesday so could be back into the swing of things early but will also have some tired legs late.

The Skinny: Shhh. Don't look now but the Panthers at 3-2 in Dulles, start 2012 with a real good feeling. Huskies are 0-5 and looking for first ever Dulles win in school history.

The Skinny: Tuscarora reports that after falling behind 12-0 to start the game the Lady Huskies settled down defensively and didn't allow Freedom to score during the second frame. The Huskies were led by senior Amirah's Al-Bayyinah's 14pt, 10 rebound performance. Senior guard Darrian Pickett had 11pts and 3 assists. Freshman Laura Vasquez-Bolanos had a career high 6 steals. The Lady Huskies improve to 2-1 on the young season.

Volleyball: Tonight's Skinny - Broad Run and Freedom Tangle in Ashburn with Cedar Run District Title on the Line; County Can Clinch Dulles Title

(Oct. 25, 2011) - The final week of the high school girls volleyball season gets in full swing tonight with district implications across the board. At Broad Run High School, the Spartans can clinch a share of the Cedar Run District title with a win over second-place Freedom. A win by the Eagles would knot the race with just one game remaining.

In the Dulles District, Loudoun County has already clinched at least a share of the regular-season title and the Raiders can win it outright with a victory on the road at Dominion.

In the Liberty District, both Stone Bridge, at TJ, and Langley, hosting Fairfax, look to remain perfect in advance of Thursday's showdown in Ashburn.

Tuesday Night Schedule

Briar Woods (10-4 in district) at Heritage (13-2)
The Skinny: Heritage can clinch second place with a win tonight. Briar Woods is two back of the Pride and two ahead of Potomac Falls. This is a potential semifinal match-up in the district tournament.

Loudoun County (14-0) at Dominion (4-10)
The Skinny: Titans have back-to-back wins to move into a tie for 6th but the Raiders are on another mission to wrap up the district title.

Park View (0-14) at Woodgrove (3-11)
The Skinny: The Patriots will not make the district tournament but can make their season with a win tonight in Purcellville. The Wolverines want to move out of the No. 8 spot prior to the postseason or else face a potential district quarterfinal match at Loudoun County

Tuscarora (4-10) at Potomac Falls (8-6)
The Skinny: The Panthers roll into this match after beating Valley on Monday. That win puts PFalls just ahead of the Vikes in a quest to earn homecourt advantage in the district quarterfinals. The Huskies can finish anywhere from No. 6 to No. 8.


Cedar Run District
Freedom (7-1 in district) at Broad Run (8-0)
The Skinny: The Spartans have quietly been one of the bigger stories this season with only one loss -- a non-district contest to South County -- since dropping the season-opener to Stone Bridge. A win tonight would clinch at least a share of the district regular-season title for BR. Freedom can throw the race into a dead heat with a win tonight.

Patriot (0-8) at Battlefield (5-3)
The Skinny: First-year Patriot is looking for its first district win but don't expect "Big Sister" Battlefield to provide it.

Stonewall Jackson (2-6) at Osbourn (2-6)
The Skinny:  Winner moves into fourth place in this match-up of Manassas schools.


Liberty District
Stone Bridge (5-0 in district) at TJ (1-4)
The Skinny: Bulldogs have won 10 straight and are ranked No. 1 in the Northern Region. TJ has dropped five straight after a good non-district run.

Fairfax (3-2) at Langley (5-0)
The Skinny: Langley shouldn't overlook a Rebel team that has done well this season.

Madison (1-4) at South Lakes (2-3)
The Skinny: Is South Lakes for real ... a win tonight would cement the Seahawks regional hopes.

McLean (3-2) at Marshall (0-5)
The Skinny: Highlanders should cruise against a Marshal team that has just two wins on year.

The Skinny: Battle for first place in Dulles District. Briar Woods has out-scored opponents by one million points since a season-opening loss to Broad Run ... OK, something close to that. Basically, it is easier to get into the CIA headquarters than it is the Falcons end zone. Heritage's Austin Nelson is one of the top rated quarterbacks in the D.C. area. The Pride have averaged 36 points a game but have also allowed almost 27 points per game. Give the advantage to the defending state champs BWoods on Homecoming in Brambleton.


Loudoun Valley (1-3, 2-4) at Potomac Falls (1-3, 1-5)
The Skinny: This is a tricky game to call as the Panthers have struggled since the start of last season but recently their efforts have been much-improved on the field, battling Heritage to the end and giving Tuscarora a good contest. Valley also battled Heritage to the end. On a muddy field, look for turnovers to be the key -- the team that makes the most will lose this one.


Park View (2-3, 2-5) at Tuscarora (3-1, 5-1) 
The Skinny: The Patriots come to Leesburg with plenty of offense recently but Park View must stop the Huskies on defense if they want to pull of what would be considered an upset on the road. Look for Tuscarora to eat up the clock with its ground game and try to wear down the Pats who have a lot of players going both ways.


Dominion (0-5, 0-6) at Loudoun County (3-1, 5-1)
The Skinny: This game has been moved to noon on Saturday due to wet field conditions at County. The Titans are averaging just 7.2 points per game and will find the going tough against a hard-nosed Raider defense. Look for County's special teams to make some special plays Saturday.


Cedar Run District
Osbourn (1-0, 5-2) at Broad Run (0-0, 5-1)
The Skinny: Wow, what a way for the Spartans to make their Cedar Run debut against an Osbourn team that has been a state contender in AAA the last couple of years and just last week the Eagles knocked off Battlefield, 28-21. The only thing standing between the Spartans and a perfect season is a forgettable second half at Stone Bridge when they lost a 24-point lead. Broad Run has Battlefield coming to town next week so the Spartans want to take care of business tonight. If the Eagles give Connor Jessop time to throw, it will be a long bus ride back to Manassas but if they can pressure the SR quarterback, then Broad Run will have its hands full.


Freedom (0-1, 1-5) at Battlefield (1-1, 5-2)
The Skinny: The Bobcats will be licking their wounds after last week's loss to Osbourn and figure to take it out on Freedom. Another tough night for the South Riding crew.

The Skinny: This is how you schedule a Homecoming game ... pick an opponent averaging 12 points a game and then put one of the top defenses in the Northern Region on the field against them. Look for junior sack-meister Jonathan Allen to ring up as many QB takedowns tonight as he wishes. The Bulldog starters should be practicing their dance moves on the sidelines by the third quarter in this runaway.

(Sept. 16, 2011) - 350 ... 351 ... 352 ... the career wins for Heritage High School coach Carmel Keilty keep adding up as her Pride squad improved to 10-1 on the season with wins this week over Potomac Falls and Loudoun Valley.

Prior to the Potomac Falls match Tuesday, Keilty, the 22-year veteran and only coach at Heritage since the school opened in 2002, was honored on the court for having reached career win No. 350.

Loudoun County remained the area's only unbeaten team at 7-0 as the Raiders knocked off Briar Woods Thursday in a match-up of two teams 5-0 in the Dulles District.

Broad Run and Stone Bridge keep winning against non-district opponents in AAA and Potomac Falls scored a five-set win against Freedom on Thursday. Also on Thursday, Dominion earned its first Dulles win of the season. Here is The Skinny for the week:

Volleyball: The Skinny for Sept. 1 and Sept. 6 Games

(Sept. 7, 2011) - 4-time defending state champion Loudoun County High School has opened 2011 with four straight wins including victories in the last week over teams that advanced to the state quarterfinals last year, Heritage and Freedom.

The Raiders are in a tie with Briar Woods, both at 3-0, for the Dulles District lead. Heritage is the only team to take a set off of the Raiders this season.

Stone Bridge, AAA state runner-up last year, has opened 3-0, with wins over Briar Woods and Freedom. The Bulldogs and Raiders will settle the question of Loudoun's top team on Sept. 26 when they meet in a big non-district match in Leesburg.

(Sept. 1, 2011) - The girls volleyball season may only be two matches old for each Heritage High School and Leesburg rival Loudoun County but that won't stop tonight's Dulles District meeting from being a big match.

Host Loudoun County is the 4-time defending AA state champion and Heritage is coming back to the Dulles District from AAA where the Pride made the state quarterfinals last year. Before leaving the Dulles for a 2-year visit to the Cedar Run District, Heritage and Loudoun County had a spirited rivalry with high-quality volleyball on the court and amazing fan support off the court. Expect no less tonight when they get underway around 7 p.m.

The Raiders extended their match winning streak to 26 with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-17) sweep over Loudoun Valley. Volleyball: Freedom Sweeps Potomac Falls in Non-District Action; Skinny on Tonight's Matches

(Aug. 30, 2011) - The Freedom High School volleyball team continued its good start to the 2011 season with a non-district sweep over Potomac Falls Monday, 25-13, 26-24, 25-10.

The Eagles, moving from the AA Dulles District to the AAA Cedar Run District this year, were led by Kaitlyn LaMantia and Jasmine Jackson both getting 7 kills. Maryam Kaymanesh had 10 assists while Andrea Kirkpatrick had seven.

Also the back row for Freedom featured Andrea Phung with 18 digs while Alyssa Gragasin and Courtney Phung each had five digs a piece. The Eagles had strong serving for Jackson with seven aces while LaMantia had five.

It may only be August but you have to circle the calendar (OK, highlight it on your iPad ap) when these two teams play as they have combined for an amazing eight state titles since 2001 (four each!) including five since Loudoun County started its 4-year run of AA titles in 2007. The Vikes, which captured the AAA state title in 2009, return to the AA level for the first time since 2004.

The Skinny: Eagles report that a big 2-out rally in the 6th-inning enabled them to win 6-3 at Tuscarora Friday night and improve their record to 8-4 overall (6-3 in Dulles District play), going into the break.

Freedom trailed 2-0 in the 5th when junior outfielder Matt Malacane (1-4, 2B, 2RBI, 1R) hit a sacrifice fly, scoring junior Joey Plesce (2-4, 2B, 2R) to cut the deficit to 2-1. Then, with 2-outs and nobody on in the 6th, the Eagles rallied to take the lead. First, it was Malacane again driving in the hot-hitting Plesce with an RBI double to deep left, tying it 2-2. Next, after catcher Dylan Teal (1-3, 1R) was intentionally walked, sophomore Zach Newell (3-4, 2B, 3RBI, 1R) delivered a 2RBI double to right-center to give the Eagles the lead 4-2. Newell then scored from 2nd on a throwing miscue on junior Dylan Chapman's grounder. 

 After Tuscarora manufactured a run in the 6th, Freedom used a single by junior Garret Schneider and another RBI hit by Newell, scoring freshman Kyle Wrighte, to close out the scoring 6-3. Sophomore DH Kevin Dean also had a big night at the plate for the Eagles, going 3-4 with 3 singles. 

Freedom senior starter Brad Baker pitched 5+ strong innings, struck out 4, and allowed only 3 runs (2 earned) to get his 3rd victory of the season. Newell got the last 6 outs, striking out 3 hitters in earning the save.

Huskies report that:
The Huskies seemed on their way to victory over Freedom High School Friday night when a two out rally in the sixth inning gave the Eagles the lead and Tuscarora took the loss, 6-3.

The evening began more auspiciously for the Huskies as catcher Hunter Oke, who sparked the Tuscarora offense all night, walked and courtesy runner Ryan Wilson stole second. Left fielder Eddie Lang moved Wilson to third with a sacrifice bunt and right fielder Brady Kaplan drove him in with a single to right to put Tuscarora up 1-0.

 The Huskies increased their lead to 2-0 in the fourth when Oke again led off the inning with a single to right and runner Wilson stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and crossed the plate on Lang’s groundout to short. Tuscarora starting pitcher Tyler Dietrich, with the help of some sparkling defensive plays, held the tough Freedom squad scoreless through four innings, but gave up a run on two hits in the top of the fifth.

The wheels came off in the sixth, though, when with two outs the Eagles scored four runs to go ahead 5-2. The Huskies pulled within two in the bottom of the inning when Oke again walked and runner Wilson made his way around the diamond on an infield hit and an error and stole home. Freedom scored once more in the top of the seventh to increase the lead to the final score of 6-3. nbsp;

Despite the tough loss, the Huskies’ bats showed more life as several Tuscarora players in addition to Oke contributed to the attack, including centerfielder Dalton Scanlon (1 for 4 with a single); second baseman Travis Burke (2 for 3 with a sacrifice); shortstop Bernie Mayflower (1 for 3 with a single and a walk); and right fielder Kaplan (1 for 3 with a single.) Following the spring break the Huskies will look to bloom with the warmer temperature when they return to the field to face James Wood High School on 26 April.


Loudoun County 6, Briar Woods 1
The Skinny: Raiders report that they headed to Briar Woods Friday night seeking to avenge their first loss of the season. The spring winds swirled around the stadium but the senior laden outfield managed to play error free, and the Raiders took advantage of those winds, producing a 6-1 victory over the Falcons. Varsity Baseball improves to 6-5 overall and 3-5 in the Dulles District going into Spring break.

Senior Taylor Cokeley got back into form, pitching a complete game, facing only 21 batters, and limiting Briar Woods to 3 hits. He only walked one and struck out four. The lone Falcon run came in the first inning after a lead -off triple and sacrifice fly brought the runner in.

Nick Fischer and Kris Pratt both led the batting attack with 3 hits each (1 double and 2 singles each!) and reaching base all four times at bat. Tyler Saleck added a double and a single and reached base 3 out of 4 times. Matt Slack added an RBI single as did Collin Dillon.


No games for Varsity Baseball over Spring Break, and they will prepare for the 2nd half of the season. The next game will be Tuesday, April 26th, at home against Park View High School.

Stone Bridge 14, Thomas Jefferson 1 (5)
The Skinny: Bulldogs report that they hosted Thomas Jefferson Friday night in a Liberty District contest. It was the second meeting of the two teams, with the Bulldogs coming out on top in the first game with a 14-0 win. This game was again dominated by the Bulldogs, who pitched and hit their way to a 14-1 win in a five inning game shortened by the mercy rule.

Junior righthander Tyler Mocabee continued his stellar pitching by throwing three hitless innings, while striking out two and allowing no walks. Junior lefty Andrew Robertson, making his 2011 varsity debut, relieved Mocabee and pitched the fourth inning, showing good poise and control. The other junior lefthander, Alex Logan, pitched an impressive fifth inning, retiring the side on just eleven pitches.

The Bulldogs offense was held scoreless in the first inning by TJ starter Daniel Hothem, but erupted for eleven runs in the second inning. Third baseman Ryan Johnston got it started with a one out home run to left field. That opened the floodgates, and before they were finished, the Bulldogs had sent sixteen hitters to the plate and pounded out eight hits, including four for extra base hits. Senior catcher Colin Karafa smashed a two-run double to the left field fence. Senior Conor Donovan drove in Karafa with a single, and scored himself on a double by Spencer Rositano. The Bulldogs weren't finished though, and got RBI hits from Ty Lighton, Josh Kuzbel, and Sid Harvey before the inning ended. The Stone Bridge added their final three runs in the next inning on another Johnston home run to left center field, giving him two home runs and four RBI's on the night. Johnston is the first Bulldog to have multiple homeruns in one game in the history of the baseball program.

The win went to Mocabee, his second of the season. The Bulldogs record now stands at 6-1 as they prepare to play in the Let's Play Two tournament against some of the other Northern Region powerhouses during Spring Break.

(Jan. 7, 2011) - Thursday night's basketball schedule was highlighted by the Loudoun County High School boys comeback 52-50 win at Park View with sophomore Mike Anderson driving for the winning layin with just 13 seconds left.

The Skinny: Mike Anderson scored 17 points including a driving layin with 13 seconds left to give Loudoun County the come-from-behind win.

The win evened County's record in the Dulles District at 3-3, moving the Raiders (6-5 overall) within one game in the loss column of third place Briar Woods. Park View fell to 4-3 and 8-4.

The Patriots, averaging 65.8 points per game, managed to carve out a 6-point lead in the final minutes of the contest but Loudoun County fought back with two big 3-pointers by junior Stephen Veschi and senior Worth Mays.

With County leading, 50-47, in the final minute, Park View patiently worked the ball around, missed one 3-point opportunity but sophomore Cody Horvath got the rebound for the Patriots and kicked the ball out to senior Joseph Jackson, who dished quickly to junior Ryan McCartr, who drained a 3-pointer to tie the contest with 35 seconds left.

After Anderson's layin spun around and bounced it, the Patriots were unable to get off a final attempt as the Raiders applied a scrambling defense and Mays was able to tip a pass into the backcourt.

The Raiders leading scorer Colin Gibson, injured against Broad Run earlier in the week, tried to play but wasn't able to go 100 percent and finished with two points in limited minutes. Senior Kris Pratt picked up the slack, finishing with eight points and 13 rebounds.

Ryan McCarter led Park View with 18 and junior Alec Dombkowski added 14.

The win capped an emotional week for Loudoun County Mark Alexander as his basketball mentor, former long-time Park View coach Ken Edwards passed away from Parkinson's disease. Alexander said the legendary Edwards was in his thoughts as the game went down to the final seconds at Park View.

The Skinny: Stone Bridge outscored South Lakes 24-12 in the third quarter to regain the lead and improve to 3-1 in the Liberty District and 11-1 on the season.

The Bulldogs were sparked by Kayla Sleece's two 3-pointers and eight points in the third. South Lakes rallied in the fourth to cut an eight point deficit to two points but Stone Bridge never relinquished the lead though, and forced a step-back three pointer to tie the score. The shot hit the rim with three seconds left and South Lakes didn't get another shot off.

The Skinny: The Raiders moved into a tie for the Dulles District lead at 5-1 and 8-4 overall with a blowout win over Park View Thursday.

County's up-tempo style of play disrupted the Patriot’s offensive and defensive schemes and pushed the Raiders to an early 24–7 lead.

The Raiders were lead by juniors Casey Cumming and Alex Lapple. Casey recorded her 3rd double-double of the season scoring 13 points and recording 10 rebounds. Alex Lapple recorded her first double-double of her career with 14 points and 10 assists.

Senior Brittany Batts lead the scoring threat with 27 points. Junior Erica Linnemann also finished the game with double digit points with 23. Freshman Maggie Phillips rounded out the Raiders scoring with 6 points.
