(Jan. 7, 2011) - Thursday night's basketball schedule was highlighted by the Loudoun County High School boys comeback 52-50 win at Park View with sophomore Mike Anderson driving for the winning layin with just 13 seconds left.

The Skinny: Mike Anderson scored 17 points including a driving layin with 13 seconds left to give Loudoun County the come-from-behind win.

The win evened County's record in the Dulles District at 3-3, moving the Raiders (6-5 overall) within one game in the loss column of third place Briar Woods. Park View fell to 4-3 and 8-4.

The Patriots, averaging 65.8 points per game, managed to carve out a 6-point lead in the final minutes of the contest but Loudoun County fought back with two big 3-pointers by junior Stephen Veschi and senior Worth Mays.

With County leading, 50-47, in the final minute, Park View patiently worked the ball around, missed one 3-point opportunity but sophomore Cody Horvath got the rebound for the Patriots and kicked the ball out to senior Joseph Jackson, who dished quickly to junior Ryan McCartr, who drained a 3-pointer to tie the contest with 35 seconds left.

After Anderson's layin spun around and bounced it, the Patriots were unable to get off a final attempt as the Raiders applied a scrambling defense and Mays was able to tip a pass into the backcourt.

The Raiders leading scorer Colin Gibson, injured against Broad Run earlier in the week, tried to play but wasn't able to go 100 percent and finished with two points in limited minutes. Senior Kris Pratt picked up the slack, finishing with eight points and 13 rebounds.

Ryan McCarter led Park View with 18 and junior Alec Dombkowski added 14.

The win capped an emotional week for Loudoun County Mark Alexander as his basketball mentor, former long-time Park View coach Ken Edwards passed away from Parkinson's disease. Alexander said the legendary Edwards was in his thoughts as the game went down to the final seconds at Park View.

The Skinny: Stone Bridge fell to 1-3 in the Liberty District and 2-10 overall despite a career-high 30-point performance from junior Jack Wohlfert.

Girls Basketball
Stone Bridge 58, South Lakes 55
The Skinny: Stone Bridge outscored South Lakes 24-12 in the third quarter to regain the lead and improve to 3-1 in the Liberty District and 11-1 on the season.

The Bulldogs were sparked by Kayla Sleece's two 3-pointers and eight points in the third. South Lakes rallied in the fourth to cut an eight point deficit to two points but Stone Bridge never relinquished the lead though, and forced a step-back three pointer to tie the score. The shot hit the rim with three seconds left and South Lakes didn't get another shot off.

Murielle Tiernan had a double-double for the Bulldogs with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Kayleigh Guzek scored 11 points, Megan Della-Penna scored 11 points with six rebounds.

The Skinny: The Raiders moved into a tie for the Dulles District lead at 5-1 and 8-4 overall with a blowout win over Park View Thursday.

County's up-tempo style of play disrupted the Patriot’s offensive and defensive schemes and pushed the Raiders to an early 24–7 lead.

The Raiders were lead by juniors Casey Cumming and Alex Lapple. Casey recorded her 3rd double-double of the season scoring 13 points and recording 10 rebounds. Alex Lapple recorded her first double-double of her career with 14 points and 10 assists.

Senior Brittany Batts lead the scoring threat with 27 points. Junior Erica Linnemann also finished the game with double digit points with 23. Freshman Maggie Phillips rounded out the Raiders scoring with 6 points.
