From Loudoun Valley --
The Vikings suffered tough losses against Dominion High School Saturday night, but several swimmers had terrific swims! Senior, Kelly Johnson took 2nd place in her 100 backstroke and 2nd place in the 200 free relay with Sheridan Suminski, Kelsey Ryan, and Bridget Shayka. First place finishes were also awarded to Kelsey Ryan (500 free, 100 fly), and Bridget Shayka (100 Breast). Sophomore, Sheridan Suminski earned a 2nd place finish in the 100 freestyle. On the men’s side, Sophomore, Mark Shayka had another fantastic night with wins in both his 200 IM and 100 fly. Junior, Ian Miller swam for 2nd place in the 100 Breastroke with a solid time of 1:10.05 which is a new school record!

The Vikings have a meet against Stonewall Jackson in the New Year on January 7th at 8 PM at Ida Lee Recreation Center.

From Dominion --
The Titan women were also victorious against the Loudoun Valley Vikings on Saturday by a score of 192-93. Royce, Williams, and Mazurowski again earned first place finishes. On Saturday, the boys swam strong and earned their first victory for the season against Loudoun Valley, 197-88. Adam Donovan, Austin Boyd, Brandon Jakab, Aidan O’Hara, and Daryl Wilkinson all earned first-place finishes in individual events.

Both Dominion teams now shift their focus to January, when the goal is to secure four wins and ensure a winning record for the dual meet season.

The Briar Woods Swim Team took on Loudoun County H.S. on Friday night at Ida Lee. The Falcons again came away with a dual win for both the boys and the girls. The girls continued to show their depth and talent placing 1st in all 11 events and coming away with a 208-78 victory.

 The boys faced a little tougher competition, however, they were able to pull off a 149-137 victory after placing 1st in 7 events.

 On the girls side Allison Haufler, Kristin Haufler, and Caliegh Hensley kept their records perfect on the year winning their individual and relay events. Kristin finished the 200 Free in a State time of 2:03.15 and 100 Free in a State time of 57.92. Her older sister, Allison, won the 200 IM in a State time of 2:19.53 and the 100 Fly in a State time of 1:00.68. Caleigh also achieved a State time in both her individual events winning the 50 Free in 25.87 and the 100 Back in 1:05.03. Caitlyn Brown took home first in the 500 Free for a second week in a row winning the event in 5:40.88. Also, Lizzie Mittan got a win in the 100 Breast in a time of 1:16.05. Allison, Kristin, Caleigh, and Erica Comm also set a season record in the 200 Free Relay winning in a State time of 1:46.69.

On the boys side big performances were turned in by Philip Mardock who won the 200 Free in 1:54.57 and the 500 Free in 5:15.65. Eric Guessford also showed off his talent winning the 100 Free in 53.05. Matthew Neilsen kept his record perfect for the season by winning both the 100 Breast in a State time of 1:03.66 and setting a new school record and achieving a State time in the 100 Fly with a time of 55.55.

From Loudoun County --
The Raider boys were narrowly defeated by the Falcons last night at Ida Lee Recreation Center in Leesburg. The Lady Raiders also fell to the defending Dulles District Champions as well.

“We were close on the boys’ side,” said Head Coach Nick Grzeda. “I’ll take the 12 point loss to a great team like the Falcons, but a 12 point win would have been better.” This brings both the boys and the girls records to 1-2 for the season and also makes their overall record 1-2.

“That Briar Woods team is amazing. They have a well of talent that seems endless year after year,” remarked Grzeda. “The depth of their team is something that surprised me during the meet.”

Both the boys and girls 200 Yard Medley Relays took second to Briar Woods, but Junior Courtner Clark would soon pick up the first win for the Raiders in the 200 Yard Individual Medley (IM) in 2:10.82. Bryan Michalek placed third for the Raiders in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a 2:17.99 two events earlier. Clark would later earn third in the 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:09.13), arguably one of the most exciting races for the night.

“Sarah Sheridan has been a real blessing to this young team,” said Grzeda. “She has dedication and leadership skills that surpass her age, and she is real talent in her events. I can’t wait to see what she does for the team in the years to come.”

Sheridan (Fr.) took third in the 200 Yard IM in 2:25.79, and later a close second in the 100 Yard Breaststroke in 1:16.09; Briar Woods’ Lizzie Mittan taking first in 1:16.05.

In the 50 Yard Freestyle Senior Captain Joe Gibson earned first (24.77) and John Showalter (Sr.) took second in 24.97. Gibson would later earn a personal best and a win in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:02.65.

Both boys helped the Raiders win the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay in 3:56.19 with Senior Chris Stowell and Freshman Cameron Van Tol.

Junior Katie Russell took third in the 50 Yard Freestyle (27.02) and second in the 100 Yard Freestyle (1:00.59), while teammate Adrienne Rivera (So.) earned third in both the 100 Yard Freestyle (1:01.27) and the 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:17.35). Freshman Emily Alliss would later earn second in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:11.68 for the Lady Raiders.

Sadly, Junior Jake Koenig’s winning streak for individual events came to an end during this meet, but not before he claimed a state qualifying time in both the 100 Yard Butterfly (57.83), and the 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:06.23) where he broke his own school record for the second time this season. Koenig would finish second in both events.

Senior Captain Jay Wareham would place second in the 100 Yard Freestyle in 54.98, while Jack Perales (Fr.) and Chris Stowell (Sr.) would take second and third in the 500 Yard Freestyle; Perales going 5:58.09 and Stowell 6:03.47. Raiders Assistant Coach, Kristin Moats who took Jack’s splits was particularly impressed with his performance. “I kept pushing him to hold his 50 splits, and he came through. I have a feeling that this may be the event that we push him in for the season.”

The Raiders take a break for the holidays and return in action against George Mason on Saturday, January 8, at Claude Moore Recreation Center. The meet begins at 5:45 pm.

From Broad Run --
In the season's third meet, the Broad Run boys were victorious, while in spite of many great swims, Broad Run's girls fell to a strong Dominion squad.

The Broad Run boys were led by senior Mark Sarman taking 1st in the 200 IM (1:58.00) and the 100 fly (52.14). Alan Horback also had double wins in the 50 free (23.00) and 100 free (52.31). Jacob Leidy took first in the 100 breast (1:06.03). Freshman Jack Morrisroe won the 200 free (1:53.91) and took 2nd in the 100 free. There were strong second place finishes by Will Metzfield in the 100 fly, Max Bailey in the 100 breast and Erik Romano in the 500 free. Broad Run's boys took first place in all three relays.

For the Broad Run girls, Abby Pasztor won the 100 back (1:07.34) and took 2nd in the 100 fly. Caroline Ruttenberg took first in the 50 free (26.59) and 2nd in the 100 fly. Anna Sarman won the 500 free (5:51.03) and took 3rd in the 100 back. In the 100 breaststroke, Amanda Swanson took first (1:19.38) followed closely in 2nd by freshman Brooke Graham.

The Broad Run swim team has 6 individual state qualifiers so far. For the boys: Alan Horback in the 50 free, Jacob Leidy in the 100 fly, 100 back and 100 breaststroke, Mark Sarman in the 200 IM and 100 fly and Jack Morrisroe in the 200 free. The girls squad's qualifiers are Caroline Ruttenberg in the 100 fly, 200 IM and 50 free and Abby Pasztor in the 100 fly. The boys team has also qualified in the 200 medley relay, and the 200 and 400 free relays.

From Dominion --
Dominion swimmers have much to celebrate as the head in to the year-end break. In the double-meet weekend, the Titan ladies were able to pick up two victories and earn their way back to an even record on the season at 2-2. Against Broad Run, the Dominion girls prevailed 166-120. The highlight of the evening was the state-qualifying swim by the 200 free relay team of Caroline Brandt, Sam Jakab, Maura Mazurowski, and Rachel Williams. The biggest improvement from the evening came from the 400 free relay, where the ladies cut 7 seconds to edge out Broad Run in the event. Royce, Williams, and Mazurowski each earned first place finishes in individual events.

The Dominion boys fell to an extremely talented Broad Run team on Friday night, 108-178. However, several swimmers stepped up to log best times and move closer to state qualifications. Aidan O’Hara won the 500 free.

The Freedom Eagles Swim Team continued its winning ways on Friday against Park View. The boys were able to win going a perfect 11 for 11 in events beating Park View by a score of 205 to 78. The girls team continued to show its new found depth, winning 10 of 11 events and outscoring the Park View girls 212 to 68.

The night got off to a fast start with the boys 200 medley relay team of Nicholas Campbell (Jr), Christopher Crampton (Sr), Andrew Smith (Jr) and Michael Harman (Jr) winning in a state qualifying and new school record time of 1:45.26.

The girls’ medley team of Rebecca Mignone (Jr), Morgan Denfeld (Sr), Maggie Eaton (Fr) and Lindsey Jeffreys (Sr) took first in a time of 2:08.25.

In the 200 Freestyle, Peter Johnson (Sr) won for the boys with a time of 2:13.97 and Brenna Curtin too first for the girls with a 2:27.97.

The 200 IM saw team captain Christopher Crampton remain unbeaten for the year, taking first in a state qualifying and new school record time of 2:08.32. The girls event was won by Katherine Doherty (Soph) in a time of 2:25.13.

The boys 50 Freestyle saw Michael Harman win an exciting race just out touching Andrew Smith 22.87 to 23.02. Both boys achieved state qualifying times.

The girls 50 Freestyle saw team captains Rachel Moffitt (Sr) and Rebecca Mignone finish 1st and 2nd in 26.97 and 28.59, respectively.

Christopher Crampton and Katherine Doherty both came back in the 100 Butterfly to each claim their second first place finishes of the night -- Crampton in 58.57 and Doherty in a state qualifying time of 1:02.32.

Nicholas Campbell won the 100 Freestyle with a new school record and state qualifying time of 50.82.

In the girst 100 Free, Stephanie Clarke (Jr) set a new school record and state qualifying time of 56.27. Rachel Moffitt and Katie Johnson (Soph) placed second and third respectively.

The 500 Freestyle saw John O’ Brien (Soph) take first in 6:16.83, while in the girls’ event, Grace Morales (Fr) dropped 3 seconds and finished second in 6:07.65.

The 200 Freestyle Relay was won by the team of Alex Myers (Fr), Grant McFarland (Soph), Devon Gaiteri (Sr) and Andrew Smith (Jr) in 1:39.09. The girls’ event was won by Stephanie Clarke, Katie Johnson, Katherine Doherty and Rachel Moffitt in 1:44.77.

In the 100 Backstroke event, Nicholas Campbell and Stephanie Clarke both remained unbeaten for the night winning in a state qualifying times of 58.01 and 1:04.29.

Andrew Smith broke the existing school record and aswam a state qualifying time with a 1:04.37 in the 100 Breaststroke. Senior captain Devon Gaiteri finished second with a time of 1:10.89.

The girls 100 Breaststroke event saw a spirited race with Maggie Eaton (Fr) winning in 1:16.08 and Katie Johnson taking second with a time of 1:17.93.

In the final event of the night, the 400 Freestyle Relay, the boys team of Harman, Myers, Campbell and Crampton won easily in a time of 3:46.91.

The girls team of Moffitt, Mignone, Doherty and Clarke swam to an easy victory in 4:05.99.

In a great night of swimming, the Freedom Eagles set five school records and achieved six new state qualifying times.

The Eagles take on Briar Woods on Saturday, January 8 at 3:45 pm at Claude Moore Recreation Center.

The Lady Vikes won their first meet of the year against Millbrook by two points on Friday night! Several stellar performances occurred during the meet. Senior, Kelsey Ryan won the 100 Fly and the 200 IM, while breaking the 200 IM team record for a second week in a row. Sheridan Suminski (Sophomore), Courtney Halterman (Junior), Rachel Swan (Junior), and Kelsey Ryan (Senior) brought in a first place finish in the 200 Free Relay, while Hannah Backman (Junior), Kelly Johnson (Senior), Bridget Shayka (Senior), and Courtney Halterman (Junior) dominated the 400 free relay. Senior, Kaitlyn Weaver pushed through the 500 Freestyle for a 3rd place finish. On the men’s side, Sophomore, Mark Shayka, placed first place in his 50 Free and in the 200 free relay along with Max Van Vleet (Senior), Ian Miller (Junior), and Nick Fochtman (Senior). Max VanVleet earned two second place finished in both of his individual events, the 100 back and 100 Breast.
