(Jan. 12, 2011) - We have a lot of catching up to do on the wrestling scene as Freedom, Loudoun County and Potomac Falls have all been busy placing well in tournaments.

Eagles Defend Winchester Elks Title with Timbers Fall in Heavyweight Finals
The Freedom Wrestling Team had an outstanding performance in Winning the Winchester Elks Classic at Millbrook for the 2nd consecutive year.

The Eagles defeated the No. 6 team in the State of Virginia from a year ago, host Millbrook, in the final match when DaQuante Timbers pinned his opponent to become the Eagles only tournament champion. The Eagles had 12 individual place winners on the weekend:

Freedom, Missing Four Starters, Finishes 4th at Arundel Holiday Tournament
On the 28th and 29th of December the Eagles went to Arundel Maryalnd for the 32nd Annual Arundel Holiday Invitational. The Eagles had a strong showing finishing 4th , despite missing four starters during the holiday season.

Freedom Defends Lou Nagy Invitational Title
Freedom High School also won the Lou Nagy Invitational at Broadway High School. This is the second year in a row that the Eagles have won the tournament who is named for Coach Nagy's father Lou who was an athletic director at the high school for 10 years.

The Eagles won the 18 team tournament with a final team score of 220.5 points almost 60 points higher than second place Broadway that had 163 points. The Eagle B-team finished in the middle of the field with a solid ninth place finish in the eighteen team field.

Raiders Update from Millbrook Invitational
Over the weekend, the Loudoun County wrestling team competed at the 2-day Elks Invitational at Millbrook HighSchool, VA.

The Raiders varsity team came in 5th place, while only wrestling 10 of the 14 weight classes. Individually, the Raiders had; 2 champions, Logan Smith 119 and Tyler Anthony 125, a second place by Kenton Perez 160, a 3rd place finisher Matt Sun 112, two 4th place finishers in Josh Martin 135 and David Richardson 152, a 5th place finish in AJ Pittas 140, and a sixth place finish from Alec Scheller 145.

Other Loudoun County wrestlers that wrestled very well were: Brian Monroy, David Houman, Hunter Day, Aaron Barclay, Mitchell Stevens, Miguel Padilla, Steven Hanford, John Corbin, and Brandon Moore. Next, Loudoun County Raiders will host their senior night on Wednesday at 5:30pm against Dominion and Potomac Falls High Schools, then travel to Riverbend High School (Jan 14-15) for a very tough Super 32 Tournament.

Raiders at Woodgrove Tri-Meet
Loudoun County Travel west to Woodgrove High School for their county Tri-meet to take on Woodgrove and Briar Woods. Loudoun County won both matches, LC 45 Briar Woods 31 and LC 42 Woodgrove 24. This brings the team's record to 16-5 on the year. Current records for varsity wrestlers are:

Raiders at Tri-Meet with Broad Run and Tuscarora
Loudoun County hosted a tri-meet between Broad Run and Tuscarora High School on Dec. 21. Loudoun County went 1-1, losing to Broad Run by criteria (33-33). The Raiders Bounced back and beat Tuscarora 58-12 to end the night.

Raiders Bounce Back from First Loss
Loudoun County High School's wrestling team rebounded from its fist team lost of the season to go 4-0 and win the Blue Devil Duals in Culpeper on Dec. 18.

The Raiders are now 10-1 on the season for team duals. Scores for the team matches were: LC 51 Culpeper 24, LC 42 Madison County 30, LC 46 Louisa 27, LC 39 Colonial Forge B. 33. Loudoun County had 6 individual champions, 3 second places, and 1 third place. Loudoun County also received 2 out of the 3 MVP's awarded, David Richardson (152) and Kenton Perez (160).

Raiders at Appalachian Duals
Loudoun County traveled to Skyline High School for a very tough 16 team Appalachian Duals. The Raiders went 3-1 on the first day. LC 26 North Stafford 42 (ended up placing 4th), LC 46 Skyline 33, LC 47 Centreville 27, LC 43 Liberty 24. On the second day the Raider went 0-2, but wrestled very tough against two tough teams. LC 13 La Plata, MD 53 (won the tournament), LC 30 Lake Braddock 45 (placed in top 6). Overall the Raiders went 3-3, but wrestled very well. The Raiders gave up 18-24 points each match due to Forfeits.

Weather Postpones Raiders NJ Trip but Team Makes James Wood Field
Loudoun County was scheduled to head up north to Collingswood High School, NJ for their annual Christmas Tournament, but it was snowed out. At the last minute, the Raiders entered the James Woods Invitational. The Raiders only brought 9 guys, but ended up with a 5 place winners: 3rd place: David Richardson 152; 3 second placers: Logan Smith 119 (lost in triple OT), Tyler Anthony 125, and AJ Pittas 140 (lost in OT); and 1 champion, Kenton Perez 160.

2010 Sterling Lions Wrestling Tournament
The Potomac Falls Wrestling Team took 2nd place at the Lions Invitational Tournament held at Park View High School, on Saturday. The Panthers missed 1st place by only 1.5 points. Leading the way for Potomac Falls was Nick Rea and Batchka Zulkhuu (1st place), Anthony Oswald and Zack Causey (2nd place), Anwar Causey and Hakim Warney (3rd place), and Stephen Cathey and Austin Mehalic (4th place).

Nick Rea was named 'Most Outstanding Wrestler' for the Panthers, securing pins against all of his opponents. Additionally, his opponents each went on to earn 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place finishes in the tournament. Nick did not give up a single point in the entire tournament.

Leesburg, VA.....Loudoun County Varsity Wrestling team took fourth as a team at the Prince William County Invitational. "We should have definitely been in the top 3, but as a team we did not wrestle to our potential," Coach Caruso. The Raiders also didn't have wrestlers in weights 103, 215, and 285.
