Swim: The Splash! Area Athletes Prepare for Districts

(Jan. 28, 2011) - This was to be the weekend of the start of the postseason with the Cedar Run and Liberty district swimming and of huge Dulles District match-ups with the Broad Run and Freedom boys due to collide tonight at Claude Moore but the weather has cancelled that marquee event.

The Spartan and Eagle boys will have to settle it in the pool next Friday at Claude Moore in the Dulles District meet. There is still a big girls meet on tap this weekend as Briar Woods and Potomac Falls swim Saturday at Claude Moore.

As for the Cedar Run and Liberty district meets, they will now be one-day affairs:

Cedar Run District Meet: One-day meet Saturday staring at 3:30 p.m. at the George Mason Freedom Aquatic and Fitness Center in Manassas. Heritage and Loudoun Valley competing.

Liberty District Meet: One-day meet Saturday starting at 5:30 p.m. at Audrey Moore in Annandale. Timed finals. Stone Bridge competing.

The Titans report that ...
DHS Boys improve to 4-3, our boys are on their way to a 4th consecutive winning season! DHS Girls improve to 5-2, our girls are on their way to their 1st winning season/best girls team dual meet record in Dominion Swimming history!

The “Future Titans” meet against Tuscarora High School brought local summer swimmers out to support Dominion against Tuscarora High School on Saturday. Many of the young swimmers wore Dominion swimming t-shirts, and cheered the Titans from the pool deck.

The high school swimmers did not disappoint, as they brought home individual and team victories. With a 162-122 win, the Dominion boys improved to 4-3 for the season. Their efforts were led by first-place finishes from Aidan O’Hara and Daryl Wilkinson.

Additionally, Kyle Ramsey had best times and top three finishes in both of his individual events, and Brandon Jakab had a best time in 50 free and top-three finishes in his individual events.

The girls improved to an impressive 5-2 record with a commanding 181-105 victory against Tuscarora. The ladies were led by several individual event victories. Rachel Williams finished first in the 200 free and 100 back; Maura Mazurowski won the 50 free and the 100 fly; Sam Jakab finished first in the 100 free; Megan Svensson won the 500 free. Jakab and Svensson captured individual wins for the first time.

The Eagles report that ...
Both Freedom teams swam to victory on Saturday against Loudoun County. The girls’ team bounced back from two close losses with a convincing 195–91 win. The boys’ squad remained undefeated for the year winning 179–107.

The meet started with the boys’ 200 Medley Relay team of Christopher Crampton, Devon Gaiteri, Tim Jensen and Michael Harman (1:49.03) and the girls’ team of Rebecca Mignone, Maggie Eaton, Morgan Denfeld and Haley Marshall (2:07.19) both winning.

The 200 Freestyle event saw Ozan Duran (1:54.39) and Stephanie Clarke (2:06.46) both win. The 200 IM had Crampton lower his School Record to 2:08.01. Katherine Doherty won the event for the girls in 2:22.51.

The 50 Freestyle saw Harman (23.13) and Andrew Smith (23.27) and Rachel Moffitt (26.50) and Katie Johnson (27.04) finishing 1st and 2nd respectively for the boys’ and girls’ teams. The 100 Butterfly had O. Duran (59.73), Peter Johnson (1:02.44) and Jensen (1:05.46) 2nd , 3rd and 4th . The girls’ event had Clarke (1:02.86), Denfeld (1:10.79), Anabella Morana (1:19.54) and Laura Manning (1:19.82) taking the top 4 spots. Clarke swam to a State Qualifying Time.

Nicholas Campbell (51.18) and Moffitt (59.42) both won their 100 Freestyle races with Alex Myers (55.83) and Mignone (1:02.81) both finishing 3rd respectively.

The tough 500 Freestyle saw the girls claim the top 4 spots again: Grace Morales (5:55.10), Katherine Tiernan 96:31.26), Brenna Curtin (6:33.40) and Manning (6:56.72). The boys’ race had Crampton (5:29.19) and Sinan Duran (6:03.88) 2nd and 4th.

The 200 Freestyle Relay had the team of Campbell, Smith, Harman and O. Duran winning in 1:34.06. The girls’ event saw Doherty, Johnson, Moffitt and Clarke win in 1:49.64.

In the 100 Backstroke Campbell claimed his second 1st place finish of the day (58.41) while Emmett George (1:07.60) came in 3rd. Doherty (1:06.00) and Mignone (1:09.56) finished 1st and 2nd for the girls’ team. Smith (1:08.71) and Gaiteri (1:11.32) came in first and third in the boys’ 100 Breaststroke while the girls’ event saw Eaton (1:15.09) & Johnson (1:18.48) finish 2nd and 3rd respectively.

To close the meet, both 400 Freestyle Relay teams swam to New School Records. The boys’ relay of Crampton, O. Duran, Campbell and Smith hit the wall in 3:29.51. The girls’ team of Clarke, Moffitt, Doherty and Johnson won in 4:00.12.

Raiders report that ...
The Raiders took on the Eagles of Freedom High School without a full squad and were defeated on both the boys and girls sides this past Saturday, January 22, at Claude Moore Recreation Center.

“We have not had the best of luck with regards to keeping our squad healthy and free of injury this season,” Head Coach Nick Grzeda said. “It would be nice to finish out our last two meets this season with full squads for the boys and girls.”

After falling to Freedom’s 200 Medley Relays, the Raiders bounced back with some fine swimming in the individual events leading up to the break. Cort Clark (Jr.) took second in the 200 Freestyle with a personal best time of 1:55.83, while Katie Russell (Jr.) took second (2:09.02) and Adrienne Rivera took third (2:14.98) in the same event for the Lady Raiders. Jake Koenig (Jr.) tied his school record and won the 200 Individual Medley (IM) in 2:06.99, while Sarah Sheridan (Fr.) took second on the girls side in 2:24.34; Sydney Alfonso (Fr.) took fourth in 2:44.92.

The Eagles took first and second place in the 50 Freestyle for both the boys and girls, although Captain Joe Gibson (Sr.) earned a best time in his third place finish in 23.83; John Showalter (Sr.) finished fourth in 25.08. Katie Russell (Jr.) finished third in 28.24, and Captain Abby Gribbin (Sr.) earned fourth in 29.00.

“Many have said that Broad Run [High School] will finish first on the boys side, and Briar Woods [High School] first for the girls this year in the [Dulles] District without hesitation, but I don’t think that those people have seen Freedom [High School] swim this season,” said Grzeda. “I personally believe that Freedom’s relay teams are on par with both teams and could overtake them in all three relays at the Dulles District Meet.”

Immediately following the break, Junior Jake Koenig finished first once again for the Raiders in the 100 Butterfly in 57.43. Captain Jay Wareham (Sr.) took second in the 100 Freestyle in 54.78 and John Showalter (Sr.) earned fourth in 55.86. Adrienne Rivera earned second for the Lady Raiders in the same event in 1:01.93.

The Raider’s biggest win for the afternoon came from Junior Cort Clark who not only finished first in the 500 Freestyle, but broke his school record and earned a State Qualifying time in 5:07.63. “Cort’s determination and dedication was unparalleled by any other swimmer in the pool today,” said Raiders Assistant Coach Kristin Moats.

“It was exciting to see him go after his goal of getting a state time in the 500 [Free] today and better his time from last week by six seconds.”

Freshman Jack Perales took third in 5:49.14, in the 500 Free, and Captain Joe Gibson (Sr.) earned a second personal best time and win in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:01.78,
with teammate Trevin Gandhi (Fr.) taking fourth in 1:10.71. Freshman Emily Alliss would earn third for the Lady Raiders in 1:12.42.

Senior Capatin Jay Wareham earned a second place finish in the 100 Yard Breaststroke in 1:10.04, and Junior Robert Risque took fourth in 1:17.32. In the most exciting race of the afternoon, Sarah Sheridan (Fr.) narrowly defeated Freedom’s Maggie Eaton in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a personal best time for the season of 1:14.37, just missing the State Qualifying time in the event. Teammate Sydney Alfonso (Fr.) took fourth place in 1:21.92.

The Spartans report that ...
Both the Broad Run boys and girls were victorious in their meet with Park View. There were many great swims, showing the depth of the Broad Run roster.

Brian Cole won the 100 free and took second in the 50 free. Erik Romano won the 500 free and took second in the 200 free. Rex Larrabee won the 100 back and Max Bailey won the 100 breast. Will Metzfield won the 100 fly.

Brooke Graham won the 100 breast and took second in the 200 IM. Elle Walker took second in the 50 free and Kaitlin Myers came in second in the 500 free

Vikes report that ...
On Friday the 21st, the Viking Swim Team had a phenomenal end to their regular season with several strong and record breaking swims against Heritage High School.

The men's 200 medley relay, consisting of Max VanVleet, Ian Miller, Jacques Deaver, and Mark Shayka, brought home a first place finish and started off the meet positively. Kelly Johnson, Bridget Shayka, Kelsey Ryan, and Sheridan Suminski won a close second and crushed the team record in the 200 medley relay.

Several events later Kelsey Ryan dominated her 200 free breaking her record by three seconds! Then, Mark Shayka, Ian Miller, and Max VanVleet swept second, third, and fourth in the 50 free. Van Vleet, Shayka, J. Deaver finished 2nd through 4th in the 100 fly. Bridget Shayka and Hannah Backman placed second and third respectively in the women's 100 fly.

Shortly after the fly in the Women's 100 free Kelsey Ryan broke a third record of the night!

The Vikings had very strong swims in the 500 free with 3rd-6th place finishes for Noah Gilhousen, Sam Adams, Jale Smith, and Noah Holt. Noah Holt had the most significant time drop of the night in his 500 bringing his time to a personal best by 17 seconds. Earlier he had dropped 4 seconds in his 200 Free.

In the Men's 100 Breastroke Ian Miller broke the team record for the second week in a row. The Vikings next competition is in the Cedar Run District meet at the Freedom Center.
