The Splash: VivaLoudoun's Weekly Swim Blog!
(Jan. 28, 2011) - This was to be the weekend of the start of the postseason with the Cedar Run and Liberty district swimming and of huge Dulles District match-ups with the Broad Run and Freedom boys due to collide tonight at Claude Moore but the weather has cancelled that marquee event.
The Spartan and Eagle boys will have to settle it in the pool next Friday at Claude Moore in the Dulles District meet. There is still a big girls meet on tap this weekend as Briar Woods and Potomac Falls swim Saturday at Claude Moore.
As for the Cedar Run and Liberty district meets, they will now be one-day affairs:
Cedar Run District Meet: One-day meet Saturday staring at 3:30 p.m. at the George Mason Freedom Aquatic and Fitness Center in Manassas. Heritage and Loudoun Valley competing.
Liberty District Meet: One-day meet Saturday starting at 5:30 p.m. at Audrey Moore in Annandale. Timed finals. Stone Bridge competing.

Swim: The Splash! Loudoun Swimmers Earn Scholar Honors Plus All the Results from Last Weekend!

(Jan. 21, 2011) - The exams are almost out of the way -- the "ice day" pushed the final exams to Monday -- and local swimmers can burn off some of that testing tension with meets this weekend.
We start with some good news ... we love good news at The Splash ... as 15 Loudoun swimmers qualified as PVS Scholar Athletes for the 2009-10 school year. Here is the list with swimmer, their 09-10 school year, high school and club team

Despite having first place finishes in six events, the Spartan girls fell to GMHS. The BR girls continue to be plagued by injury and illness. Abby Pastztor took first in the 50 free and the 100 back. Anna Sarman won both the 100 fly and the 500 free. Freshman Brooke Graham won the 200 IM and took second in the 100 breast. Kaitlyn Myers, Angela Giglio, and Kate Rasmussen all finished the 200 IM with best times. Sarah Sherman had a best time in the 100 fly and Sarah White dropped 30 seconds in the 500 free.
BRHS boys swim team continued its 26 dual meet unbeaten streak easily handling George Mason High School Sat afternoon at CMRC. Mark Sarman set his 5th school record in the 200 yd freestyle, breaking a 8 year old record set back in 2003. Sarman also won the 100 free. Jacob Leidy won the 200 IM and the 100 back. Justin Allen won the 500 free and took second in the 200 free. Rex Larrabee won the 50 free, and, in the 100 breast, Max Bailey took first and freshman Cameron Riordan took second. Seniors Andrew McLaughlin, Tim Comstock and Riza Aleemi all dropped time in the 100 fly.

According to the Meet Program and Seed Times, the Panthers were way over matched. It was a total team win right down the roster. The Panther girls were losing the entire meet and it came down to the last relay where we took 1st and 2nd place to snatch victory out of the hands of defeat. PFalls posted 21 individual best times. Winners were Ariana Staffen 200IM and 100breast and Carson Newton who pulled a Michael Phelps in the 100fly by winning by 1/100th of a second in state qualifying fashion. Swimmers putting up best times in 2 events were Carla Harvey 100fly and 100back(state cut time), Jennifer Schmid 200free and 500free, Katie Hood 200 and 500free, Meghan Voyack 100free and 100back, Eileen Fauteux 50 and 100free, Sarvi Esmaeli 200IM and 100back, and Shruti Simlot 200IM and 100breast. The stars were aligned and the girls were just waiting for this type of test and now have improved their record to 5-0.
Boy Notes: The panther boys continue to be hampered by illness but they continue to fight posting a number of best times. They were led by Jonathan Perry, Javier Mery, Riley Jamison, Bryce Dowling,Grant Deker, Tyler Koss and Gavin Saunders. Dropping the last 2 puts our record at 3-2 in hopes that we get everyone healthy and back to the winning ways next week.

Claude Moore was the site of another exciting swim meet that saw the Freedom Eagle boys remain undefeated with a 181 – 105 victory over Potomac Falls. The girls’ meet came down to the last event with Potomac Falls pulling out a 148 – 138 win.
The meet began with the boys’ 200 medley relay team of Nicholas Campbell, Christopher Crampton, Andrew Smith and Michael Harman winning in 1:46.14.
The girls’ team of Stephanie Clarke, Katherine Doherty, Maggie Eaton and Rachel Moffitt won in 1:57.90.
The boys’ 200 freestyle saw the Freedom boys take the top 4 spots: Crampton (1:56.86), Peter Johnson (2:05.70), Tim Jenson (2:08.15) and Grant McFarland (2:09.97).
The girls’ 200 had Clarke (2:06.14) winning and Grace Morales (2:19.16) placing third.
Campbell won the 200 IM for the boys in 2:10.05 and Doherty finished second in the girls’ race in 2:19.35 swimming a New School Record & State Qualifying Time.
The 50 freestyle saw Harman (22.92) win and Ozan Duran take 2nd in 23.78.
The girls’ 50 saw Rachel Moffitt win in 26.31 swimming to a New School Record & State Qualifying Time. Rebecca Mignone finished 3rd in 27.82.
In the boys’ 100 butterfly the Freedom team finished top 4 again with O. Duran (59.39), Johnson (1:02.03), Jenson (1:02.55) and Sinan Duran (1:04.74) respectively.
In the girls’ fly Doherty swam 1:03.60 finishing 2nd.
Smith won the boys’ 100 freestyle in 51.70 and Moffitt finished first for the girls in 59.22.
In the 500 freestyle Crampton won with a time of 5:22.80.
The girls’ 500 saw Grace Morales breaking 6 minutes and winning in 5:58.63.
In the 200 yard freestyle relay event the boys’ team of Harman, Alex Myers, Johnson and O. Duran finish 2nd in 1:38.83. While the girls’ team of Clarke, Johnson, Doherty and Moffitt won in 1:48.00 a New School Record.
The 100 backstroke saw Campbell swim to victory in 58.10 and Emmett George take 2nd in 1:07.70.
The girls’ event saw Clarke touch the wall first in a New School Record time of 1:02.69.
The boys’ 100 yard breast event had Smith first in 1:07.41 and Devon Gaiteri (1:12.93) finishing 3rd.
The girls’ breaststroke had Eaton (1:15.93) 2nd and Johnson (1:17.25) 3rd.
In the 400 freestyle relay the boys’ team of O. Duran, Smith, Campbell and Crampton won in a State Qualifying Time of 3:33.37.
The girls’ team of Lindsey Jeffreys, Johnson, Morales and Mignone (4:10.81) placed third.
Next up on the schedule is Loudoun County at Claude Moore on Sat. Jan 22nd at 3:45 p.m.

Titan boys are on their way to a 4th consecutive winning season, while the girls are on their way to their 1st winning season ever and have their best dual meet record in school history. One more State qualification: Maura Mazurowski (SO) in 50 freestyle. Next up: "Future Titans" meet vs. Tuscarora Huskies on Saturday, January 22nd and "Senior Night" vs. Woodgrove Wolverines on Friday, January 28th.
Loudoun County reports -
The Lady Raiders earned their first State Qualifying Time for the Season in the 200 Yard Medley Relay but lost along with the boys against Dominion High School this past Friday at Ida Lee Recreation Center in Leesburg.
“It is like the weight of the world has been lifted off of the girls’ shoulders,” said Head Coach Nick Grzeda. “We can now focus on the next two relays and the girls individual events
qualifying for States in the next three dual meets.”
The 200 Yard Medley Relay that earned the State Qualifying Time of 2:01.67 and set the new LCHS Swim Team record in the event was made up of Emily Alliss (Fr.), Adrienne Rivera (So.), Sarah Sheridan (Fr.), and Katie Russell (Jr.).
The boys 200 Yard Medley Relay also took first place in 1:48.91, the team’s best time this season in this event. The team was made up of Senior Captains Joe Gibson and Jay Wareham, Jake Koenig (Jr.) and Cort Clark (Jr.).
Sophomore Kyle Bowers had a personal best time in his second place finish in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a 2:10.59, while Cort Clark (Jr.) took second in the 200 Yard Individual Medley (IM) in 2:12.23. Clark would later win the 500 Yard Freestyle and break his own LCHS School Record in 5:13.25.
Freshmen Sarah Sheridan and Sydney Alfonso took second and third places in the 200 IM for the evening; Sheridan in 2:25.41 and Alfonso in 2:45.18. John Showalter (Sr.) earned third place in the 50 Yard Freestyle in 24.92, and Katie Russell (Jr.) took second in the same event for the Lady Raiders in 26.94. She would later win the 500 Freestyle in 6:05.03.
Jake Koenig (Jr.) had two amazing wins in the 100 Yard Butterfly and 100 Yard Breaststroke for the evening, earning a personal best time for the season in the Fly in 57.03, and going 1:07.45 in the Breast.
Jackie Schneck (Jr.) took third in the 100 Fly for the Lady Raiders in 1:22.53, while Senior Captains Jay Wareham and Joe Gibson took second and third in the 100 Freestyle in 55.31 (Wareham) and 55.63 (Gibson). Adrienne Rivera (So.) would take second for the Lady Raiders in the same event in 1:02.14.
Freshman Jack Perales shaved some time off of his 500 Freestyle taking second in the event in 5:46.61, with teammate Chris Stowell (Sr.) coming in third in 6:08.44.
The Raider boys 200 Freestyle Relay won in 1:38.33 and the team was made up of Senior Captains Joe Gibson and Jay Wareham, John Showalter (Sr.), and Jake Koenig (Jr.).
Following the win, Joe Gibson (Sr.) earned a best time and took second place in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:02.56. Freshman Trevin Gandhi earned third place in 1:11.08 in the same event and Emily Alliss (Fr.) also took third place in the event for the Lady Raiders in 1:16.05.
Jay Wareham (Sr.) took third in the 100 Yard Breaststroke in 1:12.60 for the boys, while Adrienne Rivera (So.) took first in 1:15.61, and Sarah Sheridan (Fr.) earned second in 1:16.87 for the Lady Raiders.
The Lady Raiders would take the win in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay in 4:06.41 for the evening, but it would unfortunately not be enough to win the meet. The team was made up of Junior Katie Russell, Senior Captain Abby Gribbin, Sarah Sheridan (Fr.), and Adrienne Rivera (So.).
The Raiders return in action against Freedom High School on Saturday, January 22, at Claude Moore Recreation Center. The meet begins at 3:45 pm.

Loudoun Valley reports:
The Valley swim teams swam in a great meet at Ida Lee Rec Center on January 15th against Osbourn High School. The Vikings suffered another tough loss, but they put up a great fight.
The Vikings had terrific swims including Ian Miller’s 100 breaststroke that broke the team record with a time of 1:09.56. Kelly Johnson, Bridget Shayka, Kelsey Ryan, and Kaitlyn Weaver started the meet off with a first place finish in the 200 Medley Relay. Max Van Vleet and Kelsey Ryan both won their 100 butterfly races, while Bridget Shayka dominated the 100 breaststroke.
Kaitlyn Weaver and Hannah Backman won 2nd and 3rd place in their 500 Free, both dropping several seconds. Noah Gilhousen, Jake Smith, and Sam Adams continue to have major time drops in the 500 freestyle event. The seven seniors on the Valley team were recognized for their leadership and dedication to the team. Those senior swimmers are Nick Fochtman, Max VanVleet, Oscar Deaver, Kelsey Ryan, Bridget Shayka, Kelly Johnson, and Nikki Godfrey.
The Vikings last regular season meet is Friday the 21st at Ida Lee against Heritage High School at 9:00 P.M.

Week 4 BRHS v. PFHS at Ida Lee Rec Center
The Broad Run Swim Team had a good meet against Potomac Falls on Jan. 8. The boys won, while the girls lost to a strong Potomac Falls squad.
Broad Run's boys won all three relays and the girls won the 200 medley relay. Jacob Leidy won both the 100 breast and the 50 free, breaking a nine year old BRHS record in the free. Mark Sarman won the 100 back and the 100 fly, breaking his own record in the fly. Caroline Ruttenberg won the 100 free and also took first in the 100 breast, adding that event to her list of state qualifying events. Alan Horback won the 100 free, Anna Sarman took first in the 500 free and Jack Morrisroe won the 200 free.
Loudoun Valley reports -
After a three week break from meets, the Vikes swam very well against Stonewall Jackson last Friday night. Both the mens and womens team had a strong showing but came out just short of a win. However, many swimmers had great swims and continue to improve, a great accomplishment as the Vikes enter the 2nd half of their season.
The night started with a great win in the boy's 200 Medley relay of Max Van Vleet, Ian Miller, Mark Shayka, and Nick Fochtman. After a back-and-forth run for the lead, Junior Ian Miller came out 2nd in the 200 IM, with a best time for the season. Other strong performances for the boys were turned in by Senior Max Van Vleet, with two 2nd place finishes (100 fly, 100 back) and the brother duo of Ian and Alec Miller in the 100 breast, 2nd and 3rd place respectively. The boy's also had a strong showing in the 100 free, with 3rd through 5th place finishes (Kendall Blaylock, Noah Holt, Joe Rees) and again in the 500 free (Noah Gilhousen, Sam Adams, Jake Smith).
On the girl's side, the ladies swam the 200 freestyle relay in winning fashion (Sheridan Suminski, Kaitlyn Weaver, Rachel Swan, Kelsey Ryan). Highlight of the meet was the 500 freestyle, with Junior Kaitlyn Weaver's 1st place finish in the 500 freestyle, breaking 7 minutes for the first time (yay!), and Junior Hannah Backman finishing in a close 2nd (7:01.66). Senior Kelsey Ryan was a double event winner (50 free, 100 back) and the girls swept the 50 free with 1st through 3rd place finishes (Kelsey Ryan, Sheridan Suminski, Rachel Swan). Junior Rachel Swan also clocked in a 2nd place finish in the 100 free and Bridget placed 2nd in the 100 fly.

Titan boys are on their way to a 4th consecutive winning season, while the girls are on their way to their 1st winning season ever and have their best dual meet record in school history. One more State qualification: Maura Mazurowski (SO) in 50 freestyle. Next up: "Future Titans" meet vs. Tuscarora Huskies on Saturday, January 22nd and "Senior Night" vs. Woodgrove Wolverines on Friday, January 28th.

The Lady Raiders earned their first State Qualifying Time for the Season in the 200 Yard Medley Relay but lost along with the boys against Dominion High School this past Friday at Ida Lee Recreation Center in Leesburg.
“It is like the weight of the world has been lifted off of the girls’ shoulders,” said Head Coach Nick Grzeda. “We can now focus on the next two relays and the girls individual events
qualifying for States in the next three dual meets.”
The 200 Yard Medley Relay that earned the State Qualifying Time of 2:01.67 and set the new LCHS Swim Team record in the event was made up of Emily Alliss (Fr.), Adrienne Rivera (So.), Sarah Sheridan (Fr.), and Katie Russell (Jr.).
The boys 200 Yard Medley Relay also took first place in 1:48.91, the team’s best time this season in this event. The team was made up of Senior Captains Joe Gibson and Jay Wareham, Jake Koenig (Jr.) and Cort Clark (Jr.).
Sophomore Kyle Bowers had a personal best time in his second place finish in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a 2:10.59, while Cort Clark (Jr.) took second in the 200 Yard Individual Medley (IM) in 2:12.23. Clark would later win the 500 Yard Freestyle and break his own LCHS School Record in 5:13.25.
Freshmen Sarah Sheridan and Sydney Alfonso took second and third places in the 200 IM for the evening; Sheridan in 2:25.41 and Alfonso in 2:45.18. John Showalter (Sr.) earned third place in the 50 Yard Freestyle in 24.92, and Katie Russell (Jr.) took second in the same event for the Lady Raiders in 26.94. She would later win the 500 Freestyle in 6:05.03.
Jake Koenig (Jr.) had two amazing wins in the 100 Yard Butterfly and 100 Yard Breaststroke for the evening, earning a personal best time for the season in the Fly in 57.03, and going 1:07.45 in the Breast.
Jackie Schneck (Jr.) took third in the 100 Fly for the Lady Raiders in 1:22.53, while Senior Captains Jay Wareham and Joe Gibson took second and third in the 100 Freestyle in 55.31 (Wareham) and 55.63 (Gibson). Adrienne Rivera (So.) would take second for the Lady Raiders in the same event in 1:02.14.
Freshman Jack Perales shaved some time off of his 500 Freestyle taking second in the event in 5:46.61, with teammate Chris Stowell (Sr.) coming in third in 6:08.44.
The Raider boys 200 Freestyle Relay won in 1:38.33 and the team was made up of Senior Captains Joe Gibson and Jay Wareham, John Showalter (Sr.), and Jake Koenig (Jr.).
Following the win, Joe Gibson (Sr.) earned a best time and took second place in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:02.56. Freshman Trevin Gandhi earned third place in 1:11.08 in the same event and Emily Alliss (Fr.) also took third place in the event for the Lady Raiders in 1:16.05.
Jay Wareham (Sr.) took third in the 100 Yard Breaststroke in 1:12.60 for the boys, while Adrienne Rivera (So.) took first in 1:15.61, and Sarah Sheridan (Fr.) earned second in 1:16.87 for the Lady Raiders.
The Lady Raiders would take the win in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay in 4:06.41 for the evening, but it would unfortunately not be enough to win the meet. The team was made up of Junior Katie Russell, Senior Captain Abby Gribbin, Sarah Sheridan (Fr.), and Adrienne Rivera (So.).
The Raiders return in action against Freedom High School on Saturday, January 22, at Claude Moore Recreation Center. The meet begins at 3:45 pm.

Loudoun Valley reports:
The Valley swim teams swam in a great meet at Ida Lee Rec Center on January 15th against Osbourn High School. The Vikings suffered another tough loss, but they put up a great fight.
The Vikings had terrific swims including Ian Miller’s 100 breaststroke that broke the team record with a time of 1:09.56. Kelly Johnson, Bridget Shayka, Kelsey Ryan, and Kaitlyn Weaver started the meet off with a first place finish in the 200 Medley Relay. Max Van Vleet and Kelsey Ryan both won their 100 butterfly races, while Bridget Shayka dominated the 100 breaststroke.
Kaitlyn Weaver and Hannah Backman won 2nd and 3rd place in their 500 Free, both dropping several seconds. Noah Gilhousen, Jake Smith, and Sam Adams continue to have major time drops in the 500 freestyle event. The seven seniors on the Valley team were recognized for their leadership and dedication to the team. Those senior swimmers are Nick Fochtman, Max VanVleet, Oscar Deaver, Kelsey Ryan, Bridget Shayka, Kelly Johnson, and Nikki Godfrey.
The Vikings last regular season meet is Friday the 21st at Ida Lee against Heritage High School at 9:00 P.M.

Week 4 BRHS v. PFHS at Ida Lee Rec Center
The Broad Run Swim Team had a good meet against Potomac Falls on Jan. 8. The boys won, while the girls lost to a strong Potomac Falls squad.
Broad Run's boys won all three relays and the girls won the 200 medley relay. Jacob Leidy won both the 100 breast and the 50 free, breaking a nine year old BRHS record in the free. Mark Sarman won the 100 back and the 100 fly, breaking his own record in the fly. Caroline Ruttenberg won the 100 free and also took first in the 100 breast, adding that event to her list of state qualifying events. Alan Horback won the 100 free, Anna Sarman took first in the 500 free and Jack Morrisroe won the 200 free.
Loudoun Valley reports -
After a three week break from meets, the Vikes swam very well against Stonewall Jackson last Friday night. Both the mens and womens team had a strong showing but came out just short of a win. However, many swimmers had great swims and continue to improve, a great accomplishment as the Vikes enter the 2nd half of their season.
The night started with a great win in the boy's 200 Medley relay of Max Van Vleet, Ian Miller, Mark Shayka, and Nick Fochtman. After a back-and-forth run for the lead, Junior Ian Miller came out 2nd in the 200 IM, with a best time for the season. Other strong performances for the boys were turned in by Senior Max Van Vleet, with two 2nd place finishes (100 fly, 100 back) and the brother duo of Ian and Alec Miller in the 100 breast, 2nd and 3rd place respectively. The boy's also had a strong showing in the 100 free, with 3rd through 5th place finishes (Kendall Blaylock, Noah Holt, Joe Rees) and again in the 500 free (Noah Gilhousen, Sam Adams, Jake Smith).
On the girl's side, the ladies swam the 200 freestyle relay in winning fashion (Sheridan Suminski, Kaitlyn Weaver, Rachel Swan, Kelsey Ryan). Highlight of the meet was the 500 freestyle, with Junior Kaitlyn Weaver's 1st place finish in the 500 freestyle, breaking 7 minutes for the first time (yay!), and Junior Hannah Backman finishing in a close 2nd (7:01.66). Senior Kelsey Ryan was a double event winner (50 free, 100 back) and the girls swept the 50 free with 1st through 3rd place finishes (Kelsey Ryan, Sheridan Suminski, Rachel Swan). Junior Rachel Swan also clocked in a 2nd place finish in the 100 free and Bridget placed 2nd in the 100 fly.

Swim: The Splash! Teams Split Meets on First Weekend Back from Break

(Jan. 14, 2011) - There was plenty to cheer about last weekend as several big meets were split after a season with mostly sweeps. Freedom-Briar Woods, Broad Run-Potomac Falls, Loudoun County-George Mason and Heritage-George Mason all finished with both teams claiming part of the victory.
When everybody was on the deck and dried off ... the Freedom and Broad Run boys continue to look strong in the Dulles District as well as the Briar Woods and Potomac Falls girls. And swimmers continue to lower their times as postseason looms on the horizon.

Freedom reports: In a great afternoon of swimming the Freedom Eagle boys were able to pull out a tough 150-135 win over Briar Woods to remain unbeaten for the season. The girls’ team fell just short, suffering their first loss of the season to a talented Briar Woods team 157-129.
The meet went back and forth, with many exciting races being determined by hundredths of a second.
The meet began with the boys’ 200 medley relay team of Nicholas Campbell, Christopher Crampton, Andrew Smith and Michael Harman winning in a New School Record Time of 1:44.25.
The girls’ team of Stephanie Clarke, Katherine Doherty, Katie Johnson and Rachel Moffitt set a New School Record of 1:57.08, finishing second in a very exciting finish.
Campbell (1:52.87) finished 2nd in the boys’ 200 freestyle event and Clarke (2:07.32) finished 3rd in the girls’ event.
Crampton won the 200 IM for the boys in 2:10.47 and Doherty finished second in the girls’ race in 2:25.70.
The 50 freestyle saw Ozan Duran win with a State Qualifying Time of 23.40 and Harman take 3rd in 24.37.
The girls’ 50 saw Moffitt win in 26.61 and Rebecca Mignone take 3rd in 28.34.
In one of the most exciting races of the meet, the boys’ 100 butterfly, Christopher Crampton swam a State Qualifying Time of 57.44 finishing 2nd by just .06 seconds.
In the girls’ fly Doherty and Morgan Denfeld swam 1:04.62 and 1:12.95 finishing 2nd & 3rd respectively.
In the 100 freestyle O. Duran (51.11) and Smith (51.70) took 1st and 2nd in State Qualifying Times.
The girls’ 100 free had Moffitt (59.92) and Johnson (1:00.98) finishing 2nd & 3RD.
In the grueling 500 freestyle, John O’Brien (6:17.95) finished 2nd and Bradlee Garant (6:23.22) placed 4th.
The girls’ 500 had Grace Morales (6:08.24) finishing third.
In the 200 yard freestyle relay event the boys’ team of Harman, Campbell, O. Duran and Smith won in 1:34.48. While the girls’ team of Clarke, Johnson, Doherty and Moffitt won in 1:48.64.
The 100 backstroke saw Campbell place 1st in 59.10.
The girls’ 100 backstroke came down to the last stroke with Stephanie Clarke finishing 2nd in a new School Record Time of 1:03.17, losing by just .06.
In another photo finish the girls’ 100 breaststroke event saw Maggie Eaton finish second by just .07 in a time of 1:15.30. Johnson took 3rd in 1:18.31.
The boys’ race had Smith second in 1:06.46 and Alex Myers (1:14.39) finishing 4th.
The final event of the day, the 400 freestyle relay, saw the boys’ team of Tim Jenson, O’Brien, O. Duran and Crampton swim a State Qualifying Time of 3:37.76 with a 2nd place finish. The girls’ team of Lindsey Jeffreys, Denfeld, Morales and Mignone (4:33.67) placed third.

The Panther boys ran into a tough Broad Run Team last night. Many swimmers were hampered by illness, but that didn't stop the Panther boys from putting on a great effort. Sean Hurrell continues to shine chalking up his 6th and 7th victories of the year, winning the 200IM and 500freestyle. Eoghan Foley will have a busy day at the Sate Championships as he added the 100 backstroke to his menu. Gavin Saunders continues to lead this team by example and is getting ever so close to his qualifying times. Other swimmers that were impressive last night were Jonathan Perry, Brandon Harvey, Bryce Dowling, and Matthew Woodmancy. Good effort last night.
The Panther girls continue to work hard as a team and have really needed the depth to start the season 4-0. Event winners last night included: Ariana Staffen 200IM, Carla Harvey 100bk, Jennifer Schmid 50free, Leah Koontz 200free, and Carson Newton 100fly. The girls 200 and 400 freestyle relays also posted victories, just shy of State qualifying times. Some of the more impressive swims of the night were turned in by swimmers: Taylor Derby(50fr. and 100BR), Katie Hood(200 and 500 free), Alisa Malyavko(200 and 500 free), and Sammy Wahl(500free).

The Vikings suffered tough losses against Dominion High School Saturday night, but several swimmers had terrific swims! Senior, Kelly Johnson took 2nd place in her 100 backstroke and 2nd place in the 200 free relay with Sheridan Suminski, Kelsey Ryan, and Bridget Shayka. First place finishes were also awarded to Kelsey Ryan (500 free, 100 fly), and Bridget Shayka (100 Breast). Sophomore, Sheridan Suminski earned a 2nd place finish in the 100 freestyle. On the men’s side, Sophomore, Mark Shayka had another fantastic night with wins in both his 200 IM and 100 fly. Junior, Ian Miller swam for 2nd place in the 100 Breastroke with a solid time of 1:10.05 which is a new school record!
The Vikings have a meet against Stonewall Jackson in the New Year on January 7th at 8 PM at Ida Lee Recreation Center.

The Titan women were also victorious against the Loudoun Valley Vikings on Saturday by a score of 192-93. Royce, Williams, and Mazurowski again earned first place finishes. On Saturday, the boys swam strong and earned their first victory for the season against Loudoun Valley, 197-88. Adam Donovan, Austin Boyd, Brandon Jakab, Aidan O’Hara, and Daryl Wilkinson all earned first-place finishes in individual events.
Both Dominion teams now shift their focus to January, when the goal is to secure four wins and ensure a winning record for the dual meet season.

The Briar Woods Swim Team took on Loudoun County H.S. on Friday night at Ida Lee. The Falcons again came away with a dual win for both the boys and the girls. The girls continued to show their depth and talent placing 1st in all 11 events and coming away with a 208-78 victory.
The boys faced a little tougher competition, however, they were able to pull off a 149-137 victory after placing 1st in 7 events.
On the girls side Allison Haufler, Kristin Haufler, and Caliegh Hensley kept their records perfect on the year winning their individual and relay events. Kristin finished the 200 Free in a State time of 2:03.15 and 100 Free in a State time of 57.92. Her older sister, Allison, won the 200 IM in a State time of 2:19.53 and the 100 Fly in a State time of 1:00.68. Caleigh also achieved a State time in both her individual events winning the 50 Free in 25.87 and the 100 Back in 1:05.03. Caitlyn Brown took home first in the 500 Free for a second week in a row winning the event in 5:40.88. Also, Lizzie Mittan got a win in the 100 Breast in a time of 1:16.05. Allison, Kristin, Caleigh, and Erica Comm also set a season record in the 200 Free Relay winning in a State time of 1:46.69.
On the boys side big performances were turned in by Philip Mardock who won the 200 Free in 1:54.57 and the 500 Free in 5:15.65. Eric Guessford also showed off his talent winning the 100 Free in 53.05. Matthew Neilsen kept his record perfect for the season by winning both the 100 Breast in a State time of 1:03.66 and setting a new school record and achieving a State time in the 100 Fly with a time of 55.55.

The Raider boys were narrowly defeated by the Falcons last night at Ida Lee Recreation Center in Leesburg. The Lady Raiders also fell to the defending Dulles District Champions as well.
“We were close on the boys’ side,” said Head Coach Nick Grzeda. “I’ll take the 12 point loss to a great team like the Falcons, but a 12 point win would have been better.” This brings both the boys and the girls records to 1-2 for the season and also makes their overall record 1-2.
“That Briar Woods team is amazing. They have a well of talent that seems endless year after year,” remarked Grzeda. “The depth of their team is something that surprised me during the meet.”
Both the boys and girls 200 Yard Medley Relays took second to Briar Woods, but Junior Courtner Clark would soon pick up the first win for the Raiders in the 200 Yard Individual Medley (IM) in 2:10.82. Bryan Michalek placed third for the Raiders in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a 2:17.99 two events earlier. Clark would later earn third in the 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:09.13), arguably one of the most exciting races for the night.
“Sarah Sheridan has been a real blessing to this young team,” said Grzeda. “She has dedication and leadership skills that surpass her age, and she is real talent in her events. I can’t wait to see what she does for the team in the years to come.”
Sheridan (Fr.) took third in the 200 Yard IM in 2:25.79, and later a close second in the 100 Yard Breaststroke in 1:16.09; Briar Woods’ Lizzie Mittan taking first in 1:16.05.
In the 50 Yard Freestyle Senior Captain Joe Gibson earned first (24.77) and John Showalter (Sr.) took second in 24.97. Gibson would later earn a personal best and a win in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:02.65.
Both boys helped the Raiders win the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay in 3:56.19 with Senior Chris Stowell and Freshman Cameron Van Tol.
Junior Katie Russell took third in the 50 Yard Freestyle (27.02) and second in the 100 Yard Freestyle (1:00.59), while teammate Adrienne Rivera (So.) earned third in both the 100 Yard Freestyle (1:01.27) and the 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:17.35). Freshman Emily Alliss would later earn second in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:11.68 for the Lady Raiders.
Sadly, Junior Jake Koenig’s winning streak for individual events came to an end during this meet, but not before he claimed a state qualifying time in both the 100 Yard Butterfly (57.83), and the 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:06.23) where he broke his own school record for the second time this season. Koenig would finish second in both events.
Senior Captain Jay Wareham would place second in the 100 Yard Freestyle in 54.98, while Jack Perales (Fr.) and Chris Stowell (Sr.) would take second and third in the 500 Yard Freestyle; Perales going 5:58.09 and Stowell 6:03.47. Raiders Assistant Coach, Kristin Moats who took Jack’s splits was particularly impressed with his performance. “I kept pushing him to hold his 50 splits, and he came through. I have a feeling that this may be the event that we push him in for the season.”
The Raiders take a break for the holidays and return in action against George Mason on Saturday, January 8, at Claude Moore Recreation Center. The meet begins at 5:45 pm.

In the season's third meet, the Broad Run boys were victorious, while in spite of many great swims, Broad Run's girls fell to a strong Dominion squad.
The Broad Run boys were led by senior Mark Sarman taking 1st in the 200 IM (1:58.00) and the 100 fly (52.14). Alan Horback also had double wins in the 50 free (23.00) and 100 free (52.31). Jacob Leidy took first in the 100 breast (1:06.03). Freshman Jack Morrisroe won the 200 free (1:53.91) and took 2nd in the 100 free. There were strong second place finishes by Will Metzfield in the 100 fly, Max Bailey in the 100 breast and Erik Romano in the 500 free. Broad Run's boys took first place in all three relays.
For the Broad Run girls, Abby Pasztor won the 100 back (1:07.34) and took 2nd in the 100 fly. Caroline Ruttenberg took first in the 50 free (26.59) and 2nd in the 100 fly. Anna Sarman won the 500 free (5:51.03) and took 3rd in the 100 back. In the 100 breaststroke, Amanda Swanson took first (1:19.38) followed closely in 2nd by freshman Brooke Graham.
The Broad Run swim team has 6 individual state qualifiers so far. For the boys: Alan Horback in the 50 free, Jacob Leidy in the 100 fly, 100 back and 100 breaststroke, Mark Sarman in the 200 IM and 100 fly and Jack Morrisroe in the 200 free. The girls squad's qualifiers are Caroline Ruttenberg in the 100 fly, 200 IM and 50 free and Abby Pasztor in the 100 fly. The boys team has also qualified in the 200 medley relay, and the 200 and 400 free relays.

Dominion swimmers have much to celebrate as the head in to the year-end break. In the double-meet weekend, the Titan ladies were able to pick up two victories and earn their way back to an even record on the season at 2-2. Against Broad Run, the Dominion girls prevailed 166-120. The highlight of the evening was the state-qualifying swim by the 200 free relay team of Caroline Brandt, Sam Jakab, Maura Mazurowski, and Rachel Williams. The biggest improvement from the evening came from the 400 free relay, where the ladies cut 7 seconds to edge out Broad Run in the event. Royce, Williams, and Mazurowski each earned first place finishes in individual events.
The Dominion boys fell to an extremely talented Broad Run team on Friday night, 108-178. However, several swimmers stepped up to log best times and move closer to state qualifications. Aidan O’Hara won the 500 free.

The Freedom Eagles Swim Team continued its winning ways on Friday against Park View. The boys were able to win going a perfect 11 for 11 in events beating Park View by a score of 205 to 78. The girls team continued to show its new found depth, winning 10 of 11 events and outscoring the Park View girls 212 to 68.
The night got off to a fast start with the boys 200 medley relay team of Nicholas Campbell (Jr), Christopher Crampton (Sr), Andrew Smith (Jr) and Michael Harman (Jr) winning in a state qualifying and new school record time of 1:45.26.
The girls’ medley team of Rebecca Mignone (Jr), Morgan Denfeld (Sr), Maggie Eaton (Fr) and Lindsey Jeffreys (Sr) took first in a time of 2:08.25.
In the 200 Freestyle, Peter Johnson (Sr) won for the boys with a time of 2:13.97 and Brenna Curtin too first for the girls with a 2:27.97.
The 200 IM saw team captain Christopher Crampton remain unbeaten for the year, taking first in a state qualifying and new school record time of 2:08.32. The girls event was won by Katherine Doherty (Soph) in a time of 2:25.13.
The boys 50 Freestyle saw Michael Harman win an exciting race just out touching Andrew Smith 22.87 to 23.02. Both boys achieved state qualifying times.
The girls 50 Freestyle saw team captains Rachel Moffitt (Sr) and Rebecca Mignone finish 1st and 2nd in 26.97 and 28.59, respectively.
Christopher Crampton and Katherine Doherty both came back in the 100 Butterfly to each claim their second first place finishes of the night -- Crampton in 58.57 and Doherty in a state qualifying time of 1:02.32.
Nicholas Campbell won the 100 Freestyle with a new school record and state qualifying time of 50.82.
In the girst 100 Free, Stephanie Clarke (Jr) set a new school record and state qualifying time of 56.27. Rachel Moffitt and Katie Johnson (Soph) placed second and third respectively.
The 500 Freestyle saw John O’ Brien (Soph) take first in 6:16.83, while in the girls’ event, Grace Morales (Fr) dropped 3 seconds and finished second in 6:07.65.
The 200 Freestyle Relay was won by the team of Alex Myers (Fr), Grant McFarland (Soph), Devon Gaiteri (Sr) and Andrew Smith (Jr) in 1:39.09. The girls’ event was won by Stephanie Clarke, Katie Johnson, Katherine Doherty and Rachel Moffitt in 1:44.77.
In the 100 Backstroke event, Nicholas Campbell and Stephanie Clarke both remained unbeaten for the night winning in a state qualifying times of 58.01 and 1:04.29.
Andrew Smith broke the existing school record and aswam a state qualifying time with a 1:04.37 in the 100 Breaststroke. Senior captain Devon Gaiteri finished second with a time of 1:10.89.
The girls 100 Breaststroke event saw a spirited race with Maggie Eaton (Fr) winning in 1:16.08 and Katie Johnson taking second with a time of 1:17.93.
In the final event of the night, the 400 Freestyle Relay, the boys team of Harman, Myers, Campbell and Crampton won easily in a time of 3:46.91.
The girls team of Moffitt, Mignone, Doherty and Clarke swam to an easy victory in 4:05.99.
In a great night of swimming, the Freedom Eagles set five school records and achieved six new state qualifying times.
The Eagles take on Briar Woods on Saturday, January 8 at 3:45 pm at Claude Moore Recreation Center.

The Lady Vikes won their first meet of the year against Millbrook by two points on Friday night! Several stellar performances occurred during the meet. Senior, Kelsey Ryan won the 100 Fly and the 200 IM, while breaking the 200 IM team record for a second week in a row. Sheridan Suminski (Sophomore), Courtney Halterman (Junior), Rachel Swan (Junior), and Kelsey Ryan (Senior) brought in a first place finish in the 200 Free Relay, while Hannah Backman (Junior), Kelly Johnson (Senior), Bridget Shayka (Senior), and Courtney Halterman (Junior) dominated the 400 free relay. The Freedom Eagles Swim Team continued its winning ways on Friday against Park View. The boys were able to win going a perfect 11 for 11 in events beating Park View by a score of 205 to 78. The girls team continued to show its new found depth, winning 10 of 11 events and outscoring the Park View girls 212 to 68.
The night got off to a fast start with the boys 200 medley relay team of Nicholas Campbell (Jr), Christopher Crampton (Sr), Andrew Smith (Jr) and Michael Harman (Jr) winning in a state qualifying and new school record time of 1:45.26.
The girls’ medley team of Rebecca Mignone (Jr), Morgan Denfeld (Sr), Maggie Eaton (Fr) and Lindsey Jeffreys (Sr) took first in a time of 2:08.25.
In the 200 Freestyle, Peter Johnson (Sr) won for the boys with a time of 2:13.97 and Brenna Curtin too first for the girls with a 2:27.97.
The 200 IM saw team captain Christopher Crampton remain unbeaten for the year, taking first in a state qualifying and new school record time of 2:08.32. The girls event was won by Katherine Doherty (Soph) in a time of 2:25.13.
The boys 50 Freestyle saw Michael Harman win an exciting race just out touching Andrew Smith 22.87 to 23.02. Both boys achieved state qualifying times.
The girls 50 Freestyle saw team captains Rachel Moffitt (Sr) and Rebecca Mignone finish 1st and 2nd in 26.97 and 28.59, respectively.
Christopher Crampton and Katherine Doherty both came back in the 100 Butterfly to each claim their second first place finishes of the night -- Crampton in 58.57 and Doherty in a state qualifying time of 1:02.32.
Nicholas Campbell won the 100 Freestyle with a new school record and state qualifying time of 50.82.
In the girst 100 Free, Stephanie Clarke (Jr) set a new school record and state qualifying time of 56.27. Rachel Moffitt and Katie Johnson (Soph) placed second and third respectively.
The 500 Freestyle saw John O’ Brien (Soph) take first in 6:16.83, while in the girls’ event, Grace Morales (Fr) dropped 3 seconds and finished second in 6:07.65.
The 200 Freestyle Relay was won by the team of Alex Myers (Fr), Grant McFarland (Soph), Devon Gaiteri (Sr) and Andrew Smith (Jr) in 1:39.09. The girls’ event was won by Stephanie Clarke, Katie Johnson, Katherine Doherty and Rachel Moffitt in 1:44.77.
In the 100 Backstroke event, Nicholas Campbell and Stephanie Clarke both remained unbeaten for the night winning in a state qualifying times of 58.01 and 1:04.29.
Andrew Smith broke the existing school record and aswam a state qualifying time with a 1:04.37 in the 100 Breaststroke. Senior captain Devon Gaiteri finished second with a time of 1:10.89.
The girls 100 Breaststroke event saw a spirited race with Maggie Eaton (Fr) winning in 1:16.08 and Katie Johnson taking second with a time of 1:17.93.
In the final event of the night, the 400 Freestyle Relay, the boys team of Harman, Myers, Campbell and Crampton won easily in a time of 3:46.91.
The girls team of Moffitt, Mignone, Doherty and Clarke swam to an easy victory in 4:05.99.
In a great night of swimming, the Freedom Eagles set five school records and achieved six new state qualifying times.
The Eagles take on Briar Woods on Saturday, January 8 at 3:45 pm at Claude Moore Recreation Center.

The Lady Vikes won their first meet of the year against Millbrook by two points on Friday night! Several stellar performances occurred during the meet. Senior, Kelsey Ryan won the 100 Fly and the 200 IM, while breaking the 200 IM team record for a second week in a row. Sheridan Suminski (Sophomore), Courtney Halterman (Junior), Rachel Swan (Junior), and Kelsey Ryan (Senior) brought in a first place finish in the 200 Free Relay, while Hannah Backman (Junior), Kelly Johnson (Senior), Bridget Shayka (Senior), and Courtney Halterman (Junior) dominated the 400 free relay. Senior, Kaitlyn Weaver pushed through the 500 Freestyle for a 3rd place finish. On the men’s side, Sophomore, Mark Shayka, placed first place in his 50 Free and in the 200 free relay along with Max Van Vleet (Senior), Ian Miller (Junior), and Nick Fochtman (Senior). Max VanVleet earned two second place finished in both of his individual events, the 100 back and 100 Breast.

The Skinny: The Falcons report --
The Briar Woods High School swim team continued its winning ways on Saturday against George Mason. Despite missing several key swimmers due to the Tom Dolan Invitational, Briar Woods’ state championship football game, and illness, both the boys and girls teams were able to come away with a victory.
The boys were able to win 7 of the 11 events and just outpaced George Mason for a 146–140 win. The girls team continued to show its depth placing first in all 11 events for a 196–85 win. The girls 200 IM Relay of Caleigh Hensley, Elizabeth Mittan, Caitlyn Brown, and Erica Comm finished with a State qualifying time of 2.02.06. The same group of girls came back with another State qualifying time in the 400 Free Relay winning in a time of 3:59.09.
Other top performances came from the boys team captains Philip Mardock who won the 200 Free and 100 Free in times of 1:54.85 and 52.56, Steffen Vater in the 100 Fly in 1:05.00, and Garrett Thomas in the 100 Breast in 1:14.04. The three captains also combined with Eric Guessford to win the 200 IM Relay in 1:50.46. Eric won again in the 200 IM in a time of 2:20.62. The boys 200 Free Relay rounded out their first place finishes with Michael Humphrise II, Hunter Bailey, Kyle Hamilton, and Steffen Vater finishing in a time of 1:44.31.
On the girls side Caliegh Hensley continued her perfect record despite fighting an illness winning both the 200 Free and 100 Back in times of 2:08.75 and 1:08.56. Caitlyn Brown, Erica Comm, and Elizabeth Mittan followed up their relay wins by placing first in several individual events. Caitlyn won both the 200 IM in 2:22.58 and the 100 Fly in 1:06.00. Erica took home first in the 50 Free in a time of 26.71, while Elizabeth won the 100 Breast with a time of 1:16.67. Veronica Smith also saw a win in the 100 Free in a time of 1:01.54 and Sadie McGann won convincingly in the 500 Free with a time of 6:06.87.
Finally, the girls 200 Free Relay team of Madison Dengler, Emily Jimenez, Elizabeth Gomez, and Veronica Smith just out-touched George Mason to win with a time of 1:55.42.
Briar Woods next competition comes this Friday, December 17 at 9:00 PM versus Loudoun County H.S. at Ida Lee rec. center in Leesburg.

The Vikings home meet against Heritage High School came down to a close score for both men and women, with the Pride coming out on top. The Valley team swam very well, cutting off several seconds from the previous night. Senior and captain, Kelsey Ryan set a new school record in the 200 IM with a time of 2:18.83. Kelsey also won both of her individual events, the 200 IM and 100 Fly. Senior Max VanVleet won the men's 50 free and Senior Bridget Shayka won a close race in the women's 100 breastroke. Valley will be swimming against Millbrook on Friday the 17th , home at Ida Lee, and Dominion on the 18th at Claude Moore.

The Skinny: The Spartans report ...
In the 2nd dual meet of the high school season, BRHS boys and girls teams come home with a victory Fri night at Ida Lee. The meet was highly competitive with the lead changing hands several times.
On the boys side, Broad Run was led by Rex Larrabee with 1st places in the 200 IM (2:11.25) and 100 back (1:01.10). Alan Horback won both the 50 (22.91) and 100 (52.59) freestyle events. Distance swimmers Will Metzfield, Justin Allen , and Matt Bailey swam great 500 races, giving BRHS the lead for the night. Junior Max Bailey was 1st in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.17), with freshman Cameron Riordan taking 2nd. Freshman Jack Morrisroe placed 2nd in both the 200 IM and 100 back.
For the girls, Caroline Ruttenberg placed first in the 200 free (2:08.12) and 500 free (5:40.59). Anna Sarman touched out the County swimmer in the 200 IM for a 1st place finish. Senior Abby Pasztor placed first in both the 100 fly (103.53) and 100 back (106.58). Ruttenberg, Sarman, and Pasztor teamed up with Brooke Graham to win the 400 free relay. The girls 200 free relay team of Sarman, Graham, Elle Walker and Amanda Swanson also placed 1st for the Spartans.
The Raiders report ...
The Loudoun County High School swim team fell to the defending Dulles District boys champions at the Ida Lee Recreation Center. Out of the loss, however, the boys captured two more state qualifying times.
“We have been facing a series of injuries and illnesses this past week. Combine this with the vast amount of talent that we faced tonight in a team like Broad Run and things are liable to end differently than how you would like for them to,” said Head Coach Nick Grzeda. “We did have some great swims tonight though. Jake Koenig and Sarah Sheridan among others proved that for us.”
The Raiders started the meet well, winning both the boys and girls 200 Yard Medley Relays. The boys who claimed a state qualifying time in this event last week won it in 1:49.63 last night. Senior Captains, Joe Gibson (Backstroke) and Jay Wareham (Breaststroke) took the event with the help of Juniors Jake Koenig (Butterfly) and Courtner Clark (Freestyle).
The girls who missed a state qualifying time and the LCHS School Record by less than a second (2:02.66) were Freshman Emily Alliss (Backstroke), Sophomore Adrienne Rivera (Breaststroke), Freshman Sarah Sheridan (Butterfly), and Junior Katie Russell (Freestyle).
Jake Koenig (Jr.) remains undefeated this season in his individual events; taking first in the 200 Yard Freestyle in 1:55.90, and the 100 Yard Butterfly in 58.68, had a huge night. Koenig helped fellow Raiders Jay Wareham (Sr.), John Showalter (Sr.), and Courtner Clark (Jr.) earn a state qualifying time in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay in 3:35.85.
“Jake was ready to swim tonight,” said Grzeda. “We took his lead off split as an official time for the 100 Yard Freestyle to see if he could earn an individual state qualifying time in the event and he did it. He took to the challenge better than I expected, going 51.20.”
Grzeda is referring to the VHSL (Virginia High School League) rule that allows the first swimmer on a relay to be timed for either the 50 Yard Freestyle in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay or in the 100 Yard Freestyle in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay for state qualifying times. Last week, Jake earned two LCHS School Records; one was not reported. Koenig took the 200 Yard IM record in 2:06.99.
In the 200 Yard Freestyle Jay Wareham (Sr.) took third in 2:07.34, while Sarah Rexroad (Jr.) took second in 2:48.15 for the Lady Raiders in the same event. Freshman Sarah Sheridan was narrowly defeated in the 200 Yard Individual Medley (IM) in 2:25.37 (Broad Run’s Anna Sarman took first in 2:25.28), but took first in the 100 Yard Breaststroke later in the evening in 1:15.82 edging closer to the state qualifying time in the event.
Courtner Clark (Jr.) and John Showalter (Sr.) took second and third in the 50 Yard Freestyle; Clark in 24.32 and Showalter in 24.56, while Katie Russell (Jr.) won the event on girls side in 27.59. All three would come up big for the Raiders later in the meet with Clark winning the 500 Yard Freestyle in 5:29.75; Russell winning the 100 Yard Freestyle in 59.75; and Showalter taking second in the 100 Yard Freestyle in 56.56.
Sophomore Sarah Greenspon earned third in the 100 Yard Butterfly in 1:22.95, and fellow Lady Raider, Amy Askew (Jr.) took third in the 100 Yard Freestyle in 1:09.06.
Virginia Collins (So.) took second in the 500 Yard Freestyle in 6:46.44, Jay Wareham (Sr.) earned third in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:05.07, and freshman Emily Alliss earned second in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:12.87.
Junior Robert Risque swam a personal best in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, taking third in 1:16.34. Adrienne Rivera took second for the Lady Raiders in the same event in 1:17.09.
The Raiders swim against Briar Woods High School next Friday, December 17, at Ida Lee Recreation Center. The action begins at 9 pm.

The Valley Men and Women Swim Teams started their season off at Freedom Aquatic Center on Dec. 10th against Battlefield High School. The Vikings were up for a hard meet against one of the best teams in the Cedar Run District. Even though the Vikings did not win the meet, there were several impressive swims at the meet, including two regional qualifying swims by Kelsey Ryan in the 100 Fly and 100 Backstroke.

Area swimmers didn't waste any time as many qualified for postseason meets in the first weekend of action. Two of Loudoun's top teams from last season were action at Claude Moore on Saturday with the Briar Woods girls doubling up on Broad Run and the Broad Run boys beating the Falcons head-to-head.

Briar Woods Reports:
The Briar Woods Swim Team kicked off their season on Saturday versus Broad Run. The boys faced stiff competition and unfortunately lost a close one 160-126. On the girls’ side, the team dominated from start to finish easily winning 196-87.
The girls were able to take first place in 10 out of the 11 events. Some amazing individual and relay performances were turned in during the meet. In all 4 relay teams (2 boys and 2 girls) qualified for states. 12 individual state qualifying times were also achieved.
Caleigh Hensley, Kristin Hauflfer , Alli Haufler, Erica Comm, Caitlyn Brown, Elizabeth Mittan, Steffen Vater, Philip Mardock, Matt Nielsen, Brennan Maxwell, and Eric Guessford were among those who qualified for the state meet.
The next meet will be this Saturday at 3:45 PM versus George Mason H.S. Come out to Claude Moore and support the team.
Boys and Girls Breakdown
The girls had a dominating performance vs. Broad Run from start to finish. Of the 11 events the Briar Woods girls took 1st place in 10 of them. The 200 IM Relay team of Caliegh Hensley, Kristin Haufler, Alli Haufler, and Erica Comm qualified for states with a time of 1:55.71.
In the 200 Free both Alli Haufler and Caitlyn Brown qualified for states with times of 1:59.75 and 2:04.54 respectively. Kristin Haufler won the 200 IM in the state qualifying time of 2:17.49. Elizabeth Mittan also qualified for states in the event with a time of 2:21.90. The girls swept the 50 taking 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th with Caleigh Hensley achieving a qualifying time of 25.60.
Alli Haufler again qualified for states in the 100 Fly winning in a time of 58.38. In the 100 Free Kristin Haufler won with another qualifying time of 56.06. Caitlyn Brown blew away the competition in the 500 easily winning with a state time of 5:33.94.
The girls 200 Free Relay team of Nathalie Moore, Amanda Oja, Elizabeth Gomez, and Elizabeth Mittan also qualified for states with a winning time of 1:54.93. Caleigh Hensley continued her winning ways with another state time in the 100 Back of 1:04.97.
Finally, the girls easily won the 400 Free Relay with Alli Haufler, Caleigh Hensley, Kristin Haufler, and Caitlyn Brown again qualifying for states with a time of 3:49.38.
The boys were disappointed losing their first meet of the season to a very good Broad Run squad. Despite not coming away with a win, several boys were able to achieve some outstanding times.
In the 200 IM Relay the team of Steffen Vater, Matt Nielsen, Philip Mardock, and Brennan Maxwell won easily with a state qualifying time of 1:47.34. Matt Nielsen also won the 200 Free and 500 Free qualifying for states in both events with times of 1:50.51 and 5:00.34 respectively. Despite coming in second in the 100 Fly, Philip Mardock earned a state time of 57.16.
The boys wrapped up the meet with a strong performance in the 400 Free Relay. Again, despite coming in second, Philip Mardock, Brennan Maxwell, Eric Guessford, and Matt Nielsen still finished with a state qualifying time of 3:32.56.

The Loudoun County High School Raiders Swim Team defeated Park View in the first swim meet of the season tonight at Claude Moore Recreation Center.
“We had a successful meet today,” said Head Coach Nick Grzeda. This is Grzeda’s sixth season as Head Coach of the Raiders Swim Team. “We haven’t had much time to put all of the pieces together, but I am pleased with what we have created thus far. You can expect a lot from this group of swimmers during this season. They are focused and driven to succeed.”
The Raiders who came up big tonight were team captains, Joe Gibson (Sr.) and Jay Wareham (Sr.) with Juniors Jake Koenig and Courtner Clark. They all swam in the 200 Yard Medley (1:49.76) and 200 Yard Freestyle (1:36.30) Relays which earned State qualifying times.
Jake Koenig also took first place in both his individual events, earning a State qualifying time in the 200 Yard Individual Medley (IM) with a time of 2:06.99. Koenig would later break his own LCHS Team Record in the 100 Yard Breaststroke in 1:06.75. Courtner Clark was close on his heels finishing second in 1:07.50. Clark took first in the 100 Yard Butterfly in 59.53 narrowly missing a State qualifying time for the event.
Joe Gibson took first in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:05.02 and second in the 50 Yard Freestyle (25.11) behind teammate John Showalter (Sr.) who took first in 24.98. Showalter claimed a narrowly margined second place in 55.99 to Jay Wareham’s first place finish of 55.47 in the 100 Yard Freestyle for the evening. Wareham would later take third place in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:08.64.
“I was most impressed with John Showalter for the boys tonight,” said Assistant Coach Kristin Moats. “He wanted those times and showed everyone what he was capable of. I believe that John is going to be a huge asset for the Raiders this season.”
Freshman Brandon McKay fought and succeeded in taking first place in the 200 Yard Freestyle (2:24.43) and later second place in the 500 Yard Freestyle (6:50.14) behind teammate Chris Stowell (Sr.) who claimed first in 6:20.78. Stowell took second place in the 100 Yard Butterfly in 1:09.82, while teammate and Captain EJ Poell took third place in 1:13.53. Bryan Michalek (Jr.) took third in the 200 Yard Freestyle in 2:26.41.
Kyle Bowers (So.) took second in the 200 Yard IM in 2:31.58 while Freshman Cameron Van Tol claimed third in 2:35.07 and Kyle Beard (So.) took third in the 50 Yard Freestyle in 29.01. Junior Zach Sanders took third in the 100 Yard Freestyle in 1:07.12.

The Lady Raiders were just short of earning their first State qualifying time for the season in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. The relay was led by Freshman Emily Alliss in the Backstroke, Adrienne Rivera (So.) in the Breaststroke, Sarah Sheridan (Fr.) in the Butterfly, and Junior Katie Russell anchoring the relay with the Freestyle. The girls earned a 2:02.76 narrowly missing the 2:02.29 State qualifying time.
During the meet, Katie Russell took first place in the 50 Yard Freestyle in 26.72, third place in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:12.51 and would help Sarah Sheridan, Adrienne Rivera, and Virginia Collins (So.) take first place in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay in 1:54.26.
Sophomores Adrienne Rivera and Virginia Collins came up with big finishes in their individual events for the Lady Raiders as well. Rivera took first in both the 100 Yard Freestyle (1:01.34) and 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:17.88) while Collins took first in the 500 Yard Freestyle (6:38.06) and second in the 200 Yard Freestyle in 2:28.47.
Emily Alliss and Sarah Sheridan would pick up a pair of second place finishes each in their individual events for the evening, Alliss going 1:07.49 in the 100 Yard Freestyle and 1:11.82 in the 100 Yard Backstroke and Sheridan going 2:29.26 in her 200 Yard IM and 1:18.58 in her 100 Yard Breaststroke.
Senior Captain Abby Gribbin took third in both the 200 Yard Freestyle (2:39.52) and 50 Yard Freestyle (30.16), while Sarah Greenspon (So.) earned second in the 100 Yard Butterfly in 1:22.04, and Juniors Amy Askew and Arlyn Garcia took third in their events; Askew going 1:10.11 in the 100 Yard Freestyle and Garcia 7:24.37 in the 500 Yard Freestyle.
The Raiders swim against Broad Run High School next Friday, December 10, at Ida Lee Recreation Center. The action begins at 9:00 pm.
