Area swimmers didn't waste any time as many qualified for postseason meets in the first weekend of action. Two of Loudoun's top teams from last season were action at Claude Moore on Saturday with the Briar Woods girls doubling up on Broad Run and the Broad Run boys beating the Falcons head-to-head.

Briar Woods Reports:
The Briar Woods Swim Team kicked off their season on Saturday versus Broad Run. The boys faced stiff competition and unfortunately lost a close one 160-126. On the girls’ side, the team dominated from start to finish easily winning 196-87.

The girls were able to take first place in 10 out of the 11 events. Some amazing individual and relay performances were turned in during the meet. In all 4 relay teams (2 boys and 2 girls) qualified for states. 12 individual state qualifying times were also achieved.

Caleigh Hensley, Kristin Hauflfer , Alli Haufler, Erica Comm, Caitlyn Brown, Elizabeth Mittan, Steffen Vater, Philip Mardock, Matt Nielsen, Brennan Maxwell, and Eric Guessford were among those who qualified for the state meet.

The next meet will be this Saturday at 3:45 PM versus George Mason H.S. Come out to Claude Moore and support the team.

Boys and Girls Breakdown
The girls had a dominating performance vs. Broad Run from start to finish. Of the 11 events the Briar Woods girls took 1st place in 10 of them. The 200 IM Relay team of Caliegh Hensley, Kristin Haufler, Alli Haufler, and Erica Comm qualified for states with a time of 1:55.71.

In the 200 Free both Alli Haufler and Caitlyn Brown qualified for states with times of 1:59.75 and 2:04.54 respectively. Kristin Haufler won the 200 IM in the state qualifying time of 2:17.49. Elizabeth Mittan also qualified for states in the event with a time of 2:21.90. The girls swept the 50 taking 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th with Caleigh Hensley achieving a qualifying time of 25.60.

Alli Haufler again qualified for states in the 100 Fly winning in a time of 58.38. In the 100 Free Kristin Haufler won with another qualifying time of 56.06. Caitlyn Brown blew away the competition in the 500 easily winning with a state time of 5:33.94.

The girls 200 Free Relay team of Nathalie Moore, Amanda Oja, Elizabeth Gomez, and Elizabeth Mittan also qualified for states with a winning time of 1:54.93. Caleigh Hensley continued her winning ways with another state time in the 100 Back of 1:04.97.

Finally, the girls easily won the 400 Free Relay with Alli Haufler, Caleigh Hensley, Kristin Haufler, and Caitlyn Brown again qualifying for states with a time of 3:49.38.

The boys were disappointed losing their first meet of the season to a very good Broad Run squad. Despite not coming away with a win, several boys were able to achieve some outstanding times.

In the 200 IM Relay the team of Steffen Vater, Matt Nielsen, Philip Mardock, and Brennan Maxwell won easily with a state qualifying time of 1:47.34. Matt Nielsen also won the 200 Free and 500 Free qualifying for states in both events with times of 1:50.51 and 5:00.34 respectively. Despite coming in second in the 100 Fly, Philip Mardock earned a state time of 57.16.

The boys wrapped up the meet with a strong performance in the 400 Free Relay. Again, despite coming in second, Philip Mardock, Brennan Maxwell, Eric Guessford, and Matt Nielsen still finished with a state qualifying time of 3:32.56.

Loudoun County Reports:
The Loudoun County High School Raiders Swim Team defeated Park View in the first swim meet of the season tonight at Claude Moore Recreation Center.

“We had a successful meet today,” said Head Coach Nick Grzeda. This is Grzeda’s sixth season as Head Coach of the Raiders Swim Team. “We haven’t had much time to put all of the pieces together, but I am pleased with what we have created thus far. You can expect a lot from this group of swimmers during this season. They are focused and driven to succeed.”

The Raiders who came up big tonight were team captains, Joe Gibson (Sr.) and Jay Wareham (Sr.) with Juniors Jake Koenig and Courtner Clark. They all swam in the 200 Yard Medley (1:49.76) and 200 Yard Freestyle (1:36.30) Relays which earned State qualifying times.

Jake Koenig also took first place in both his individual events, earning a State qualifying time in the 200 Yard Individual Medley (IM) with a time of 2:06.99. Koenig would later break his own LCHS Team Record in the 100 Yard Breaststroke in 1:06.75. Courtner Clark was close on his heels finishing second in 1:07.50. Clark took first in the 100 Yard Butterfly in 59.53 narrowly missing a State qualifying time for the event.

Joe Gibson took first in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:05.02 and second in the 50 Yard Freestyle (25.11) behind teammate John Showalter (Sr.) who took first in 24.98. Showalter claimed a narrowly margined second place in 55.99 to Jay Wareham’s first place finish of 55.47 in the 100 Yard Freestyle for the evening. Wareham would later take third place in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:08.64.

“I was most impressed with John Showalter for the boys tonight,” said Assistant Coach Kristin Moats. “He wanted those times and showed everyone what he was capable of. I believe that John is going to be a huge asset for the Raiders this season.”

Freshman Brandon McKay fought and succeeded in taking first place in the 200 Yard Freestyle (2:24.43) and later second place in the 500 Yard Freestyle (6:50.14) behind teammate Chris Stowell (Sr.) who claimed first in 6:20.78. Stowell took second place in the 100 Yard Butterfly in 1:09.82, while teammate and Captain EJ Poell took third place in 1:13.53. Bryan Michalek (Jr.) took third in the 200 Yard Freestyle in 2:26.41.

Kyle Bowers (So.) took second in the 200 Yard IM in 2:31.58 while Freshman Cameron Van Tol claimed third in 2:35.07 and Kyle Beard (So.) took third in the 50 Yard Freestyle in 29.01. Junior Zach Sanders took third in the 100 Yard Freestyle in 1:07.12.

The Lady Raiders were just short of earning their first State qualifying time for the season in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. The relay was led by Freshman Emily Alliss in the Backstroke, Adrienne Rivera (So.) in the Breaststroke, Sarah Sheridan (Fr.) in the Butterfly, and Junior Katie Russell anchoring the relay with the Freestyle. The girls earned a 2:02.76 narrowly missing the 2:02.29 State qualifying time.

During the meet, Katie Russell took first place in the 50 Yard Freestyle in 26.72, third place in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:12.51 and would help Sarah Sheridan, Adrienne Rivera, and Virginia Collins (So.) take first place in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay in 1:54.26.

Sophomores Adrienne Rivera and Virginia Collins came up with big finishes in their individual events for the Lady Raiders as well. Rivera took first in both the 100 Yard Freestyle (1:01.34) and 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:17.88) while Collins took first in the 500 Yard Freestyle (6:38.06) and second in the 200 Yard Freestyle in 2:28.47.

Emily Alliss and Sarah Sheridan would pick up a pair of second place finishes each in their individual events for the evening, Alliss going 1:07.49 in the 100 Yard Freestyle and 1:11.82 in the 100 Yard Backstroke and Sheridan going 2:29.26 in her 200 Yard IM and 1:18.58 in her 100 Yard Breaststroke.
Senior Captain Abby Gribbin took third in both the 200 Yard Freestyle (2:39.52) and 50 Yard Freestyle (30.16), while Sarah Greenspon (So.) earned second in the 100 Yard Butterfly in 1:22.04, and Juniors Amy Askew and Arlyn Garcia took third in their events; Askew going 1:10.11 in the 100 Yard Freestyle and Garcia 7:24.37 in the 500 Yard Freestyle.
The Raiders swim against Broad Run High School next Friday, December 10, at Ida Lee Recreation Center. The action begins at 9:00 pm.
