Wrestling Notebook: Loudoun County and Potomac Falls Open Strong as Tournament Hosts; Freedom 5th at Tough Skyline Meet

(Dec. 7, 2010) - Welcome to "The Takedown" VivaLoudoun's weekly wrestling blog where we will try and give you all the news and notes from the weekend action.

The highlight of the first weekend was a strong opening by Loudoun County and Potomac Falls at tournaments they each hosted. The Raiders went 5-0 at the aptly named Raider Duals and the Panthers went 5-0 at the aptly named Potomac Falls Duals.

Woodgrove High School got its program -- in season one -- off on the right foot with two wins at the Raider Duals. Freedom finished fifth at a very tough Skyline Elite tournament that featured some of the top teams in the state.

Dec. 4 Wrestling Results
Raider Duals at Loudoun County
Loudoun County High School hosted the Annual Raider Duals sponsored by Santee Trucking over the weekend. Participating teams inclueded: Brooke Point, George Mason, Clarke County, Heritage, Woodgrove, Tuscarora, Briar Woods and Loudoun County.

The Raider Duals was a bracket style team tournament that places all teams. Awards were given to the top 3 teams, MVP for each team, a Pin King and a Takedown Champ.

The top 3 teams were: Loudoun County, Briar Woods and Brooke.

The Pin King was awarded to John Avery (Heritage) and the Takedown Champ went to David Richardson (Loudoun County).

The MVP for Loudoun County was Tyler Anthony.

Woogrove at Raider Duals
Woodgrove stepped on to the mat for the first competition in school history to participate in the Raider Duals at Loudoun County High School. The team also earned the first victory in school history by going 2-3 on the day.

Potomac Falls Duals
The Potomac Falls High School wrestling team wrestled in their Home Opener Duals on Saturday. The Panthers went 5-0 beating Freedom-B, TC Williams, James Madison, Woodson, and Stone Bridge.

Exceptional performances were turned in by Nick Rea, Batchka Zulkhuu, and Anwar Causey, each going 5-0 on the day. The Panthers were also led by Zach Zedan, Zach Causey, and Austin Mehalic, who each went 4-1.

Potomac Falls will return to action this Friday and Saturday, December 10 and 11, at the NOVA Classic. This tournament features some of Northern Virginia’s toughest wrestling schools, and involves 32 teams.

Freedom at Skyline Elite Opener
Eagles open season on road and finish fifth out of 12 teams in the highly-competitive meet that featured powers such as Colonial Forge, Grundy and Fauquier. Freedom heavyweight DaQuante Timbers took first in the 285 weight class.
