Football: Angry Birds! Briar Woods Pummels Second Straight Opponent

(Sept. 20, 2011) - Broad Run High School is no longer in the Dulles District but that hasn't prevented the Spartans from stirring the district pot as their season-opening win over defending Division 4 state champion Briar Woods has created a team of "Angry Birds" with the Falcons opening district play by out-scoring two opponents, 101-3!

On the heels of a 53-3 win over Park View a week ago, Briar Woods shut down Dominion Friday, 48-0, to improve to 2-0 in Dulles District and 2-1 overall. Dominion is 0-2 and 0-3.

Briar Woods even started this game slow with just a 3-0 lead after the first quarter but that was followed by a flurry of points in the second quarter as the Falcons flew to the end zone six times in less than eight minutes, including three Trace McSorely TD throws.

McSorley, who also ran in a score during the stretch, found Devin Ramos for a 27-yard score, Cam Serigne for a 12-yard score and Matt Rolin for a 27-yard score. Also, Cory Colder had a 22-yard TD run and Alex Carter broke off a 56-yard TD run.

With a running clock in the second half, Briar Woods tacked on a second David Clements field goal (he hit from 36 and 24 in the win) for the 48-0 final.

The Falcons out-gained the Titans, 292-68 in the contest. Briar Woods defense registered four sacks, picked off three passes, recovered two fumbles and held Dominion to 0 for 8 on third down attempts in the game.

McSorley finished 6 of 14 for 152 yards and the three scores with one interception. Rolin caught three passes for 84 yards. A bevy of Briar Woods backs, eight total, combined for 140 yards on 31 carries. Carter, Melvin Holland and Brandon Brown had the picks. Joe Rizzardi, who twice registered safeties a week ago with sacks in the end zone, had two more sacks Friday. Mark Leith and Zach Sload also had sacks.
