Briar Woods: Dulles District Tournament Champions!

"It was real tough conditions today and there is a lot of trouble everywhere," said Briar Woods first-year golf coach Mike Benson, likely known to most Falcon fans as the school's boys basketball coach. "324 is a real strong score, especially when you play the first 12 or 13 holes in the pouring rain."
It was the Falcons third tournament title and first since 2007. Regular season champion Dominion -- third on Tuesday with a 335 -- advanced along with Briar Woods to Region II tournament.
Loudoun Valley's Ian Hildebrand took low individual honors with a 73, but his Viking team, which went 7-0-1 in the dual meet season with a tie to Briar Woods, was only able to muster a 340 for fourth place, one stroke ahead of Tuscarora and five better than Woodgrove.

Hildebrand won despite a double bogey at the course's signature par-3 18th hole which requires a deft iron shot of 150 yards or so over water to a sliver of a green. Tuesday's diabolical pin placement was wedged into a corner of the green between the water and putting green just up the hill which is out of bounds. Those that dared to shoot for the pin had very little room for error and as groups finished on the afternoon there was more than one "Tin Cup" moment with balls whizzing over the green and among the spectators as more than a dozen athletes shot over 100.
"The 18th is a hard hole. You have water short and trouble long," said Hildebrand.
Heritage's Ryan Douglass was runner-up with a 74. Heritage's Ryan O'Sullivan and Briar Woods' Nick Vazzana each shot 75 in the same group. Another Falcon, Adam Ochs came in at 77 and there was a tie for the sixth and final medal spot between Danny Moore of Woodgrove, Christian Fortier of Potomac Falls and Alec Gard of Tuscarora.
The Region II meet is Oct. 3 at the Old Trail Golf Club in Crozet. Hildebrand, Douglass, O'Sullivan, Moore, Fortier and Gard all move as individuals.
