News: Loudoun Education Foundation Raises $92,000 at Annual Golf Classic

(Sept. 27, 2011) - The Loudoun Education Foundation (LEF) raised $92,000 at its annual Golf Classic on Monday, September 19, at the 1757 Golf Club.

The Loudoun Education Foundation (LEF) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation that raises private funds to enhance the quality of education in Loudoun County Public Schools. The Foundation supports projects that stimulate students’ curiosity and create exceptional learning opportunities.


For the first time, members of the Washington Redskins Chapter of the NFL Alumni Association took part in the golf classic. Mark Moseley, the chapter’s president, played in the tournament and spoke at a dinner afterward.

Moseley, the Redskins all-time leading scorer, said he travels the country speaking to young people and has come away with a distinct impression of America’s youth.

“Regardless of what people say and what you might hear out there, our young people today are some of the smartest, some of the best young people that this country has ever produced.”

Moseley added that groups like the LEF help make a difference in making sure America’s youth reaches its potential. (Four former Redskins, Moseley, Clarence Vaughn, Pat Fischer and Raven Caldwell participated in the tournament.)

Moseley’s theme was picked up by LCPS Superintendent Edgar B. Hatrick III during his remarks at the dinner.

“There’s a lot of talk in America about the achievement gap. But maybe what we really have is an opportunity gap…There are kids who simply don’t have opportunities that other students have. Historically, we know there were children who were excluded from school for various reasons...But even today…we have kids who are living in our community who simply don’t have the opportunities that other children in the schools do.

“You, in the Loudoun Education Foundation; you, in the business community step in and help us to close that opportunity gap. To make sure that every child who comes to a Loudoun County public school has their needs met so that learning can take place.

“We, as educators, can provide the educational environment that our kids need. But it takes much more than that to make sure that all the opportunities they need are fulfilled.”

Hatrick also announced that Moseley Architects will be the title sponsor for the LEF Classic again next year. (Moseley Architects has committed $15,000 for this honor.)

The retired president and CEO of Moseley Architects, Bob Mills, challenged those at the dinner to match his firm’s generosity. “There’s room for your name up there too; we don’t have to be the only one.”

On the course, the team of Mark Proefrock, Ed Williams, Brian Agee and Joe Shomers won the best-ball tournament with a score of 53. (1757 is a par-70 course laid out over 6,600 yards.)

The team of Trey Mauck, Michael Smith, Jason Richards and Ben Mannino placed second with a score of 56. Placing third in a card playoff was the team of Jack Weber, Jack Wargo, Rob Smart and Scott Kelly, also with a score of 56.

James Austin won the long drive contest for the men and Stephanie Werner for the women. Ben Mannino won the closest to the pin competition.
