News: Malone Foundation Recipients Honored - Scholarships to Middle School Students in Art, Math, Music and science

(Oct. 25, 2012) - The Loudoun County School Board recognized the Teri and Shari Malone Foundation Class of 2012 at its October 23rd meeting.

The Teri and Shari Malone Foundation is dedicated to the memory of exceptionally talented twins who lost their lives in 1989 at the age of 14 in an automobile accident. They had just completed their eighth grade year at Seneca Ridge Middle School and were to enter the freshman class of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in the fall. They were particularly accomplished in the fields of art, computer science, dance, mathematics, music and science as well as being straight A students at Seneca Ridge.

News: "The Art of Boxing" Runs Through Oct. 8 at the National Gallery of Art

 Washington, D.C. (Sept. 27, 2012) - When George Bellows died at the age of 42 in 1925, he was hailed as one of the greatest artists America had yet produced. The first comprehensive exhibition of his career in more than three decades runs through Oct. 8, 2012 at the National Gallery of Art. George Bellows includes some 130 paintings, drawings, and lithographs of tenement children, boxers, and the urban landscape of New York, as well as Maine seascapes, sports images, World War I subjects, family portraits, and Woodstock, NY, scenes.

An enthusiastic athlete himself, Bellows created paintings, drawings, and prints not only of boxing subjects but also of baseball, football, tennis, basketball, and polo. Born in Columbus, Ohio, he attended Central High School where he played basketball and baseball. At Ohio State, Bellows played basketball and baseball, as well as semipro baseball during the summer in Ohio, and later in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Art News: Harmony Intermediate 9th Grader on "GMA" Friday

(Nov. 12, 2009) - Charlie Beggs, a ninth-grader at Harmony Intermediate School, will be featured on “Good Morning America” on Friday, November 13th, to discuss a work of art that began as a class project.

As an assignment in Kristen Hepner's eighth grade English class, Beggs created a claymation book trailer for a favorite book,“Looking Glass Wars” by Frank Bedder. To ensure that his teacher could view his work, Beggs posted his video on YouTube where the author happened to see it.

Bedder contacted Beggs and commissioned him to create a video for his new book, “Hatter M: Mad with Wonder.” Now a ninth-grader, Beggs will be visiting “Good Morning America” when Frank Bedder introduces his new book and premieres Beggs' video.
