(June 5, 2010) - In less than two hours last night, Loudoun athletes captured regional titles in games played from Purcellville to Ashburn to Sterling to Burke and they took home enough individual medals that the athletes could balance the school district budget on a "Cash for Gold" basis.
Simply put: it was a "Title Wave" and five regional champions -- Broad Run girls soccer, Loudoun Valley girls soccer, Potomac Falls baseball and Stone Bridge boys and girls soccer -- all earned a banner for their schools and a home playoff date in Tuesday's VHSL state quarterfinals.
One team, Loudoun Valley High School girls lacrosse, has already advanced beyond the state quarterfinals as the Vikings defeated Madison, 15-7, Friday night at home to move to next Wednesday's state semifinals at Westfield High School.
The sixth regional champion will be crowned tonight at 6 p.m. in Ashburn when Potomac Falls and Broad Run boys soccer pick up their Region II title game which was suspended by lightning with 30:31 left in the second half and the game scoreless.
The winner of this game will join the Broad Run girls soccer -- 2-0 winner over Loudoun County i the Region II finals -- Loudoun Valley girls soccer -- dramatic winners in penalty kicks, 5-4, over Forest Park after scoreless play through two overtimes in the Northwest Region finals -- Potomac Falls baseball -- which survived a Brentsville comeback attempt to beat the Tigers, 13-10, in the Region II finals -- and Stone Bridge boys and girls soccer -- which pulled off a rare Northern Region double-double with the boys erasing a 2-0 deficit to beat McLean, 3-2, and the girls edging Robinson, 2-1 -- as regional title winners.
The only teams falling just short Friday were the Briar Woods softball team, which had a 1-0 lead at Monticello but fell 2-1 in the Region II finals and Loudoun Valley softball which was shut out 3-0 at Battlefield in the Northwest Region finals.

The Skinny: Ben Sweger opened this game for the Panthers by sending the first pitch in the bottom of the first inning over the fence for a home run and PFalls led throughout, 4-0 after the first, but the Tigers kept catching up with the game tied at 4-4, 7-7 and 9-9. Jackson Rogers came in on relief and needed a game-ending double play with the bases loaded to finally send the Nokesville nine packing. Michael Lascomb also homered in the game for PFalls.

The Skinny: Mustangs win the school's first ever Region II title by scoring go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning on an errant pickoff throw. Victoria Scott earned the win for Monticello with 13 strikeouts, four hits and one walk allowed. The Falcons only run came on a throwing error in the top of the third. Amber Dillow's RBI hit in the bottom of the fifth tied the game and Monticello went ahead for good in the next inning.

The Skinny: Miranda Kemp struck out nine and got the shutout as the Bobcats avenged a Cedar Run District tournament loss -- not to mention a loss in last year's regional finals -- to Loudoun Valley. The Vikes hurt themselves with throwing errors that helped lead to all three Bobcat runs.

Northern Region Finals at Lake Braddock

The Skinny: The Bulldogs secured their second Northern Regional championship in three years with a dramatic come from behind win over McLean at Lake Braddock HS on Friday night. The Bulldogs were down 2-0 at the half but came roaring back with goals from senior Michael Herndon and two from junior defender Luke Schierling to pull out the win. Assisting on the goals Michael Morningstar, Tommy Dunne, and Michael Herndon. Nick Lowrey had an outstanding game in goal for the Bulldogs coming up with several key saves in the game and two as time was winding down to prevent McLean from gaining the equalizer. With the win the Bulldogs will host Patrick Henry from Roanoke at home on Tuesday in the first round of the AAA State tournament. Time will be announced on Monday. The win over McLean, it was the third meeting in between the two teams in just over three weeks, was Stone Bridge's first win over the Highlanders after two setbacks by scores of 3-1 and 1-0. With the win the team's record improves to 16-3 on the season.

Potomac Falls 0, Broad Run 0 (SUSP 2nd Half, Will Resume Sat. 6 p.m.)
The Skinny: Yes these were the same two teams that played a suspended -- and never finished -- scoreless district title game a week ago. Tonight if they are scoreless after regulation it will be a 10-minute overtime followed by a 10-minute sudden death followed by penalty kicks followed by a debate by team captains at midfield on the following topic: "Is Zero a Number"

Northern Region Finals at Lake Braddock
Stone Bridge 2, Robinson 1
The Skinny: Freshman Ashley Herndon netted her 24th goal of the season, extending her single school record, in the 48th minute off an assist from freshman Murielle Tiernan to hand SB the regional title. Jennifer Skogerboe got SB ahead 1-0 with a goal but the Rams tied before halftime. The Bulldogs will host Forest Park on Tuesday in the state quarterfinals at home.

The Skinny: Valley Didi Haracic came up with the huge save in penalty kicks to hand the Vikes the dramatic 5-4 PK win after the two teams went scoreless through regulation and two overtimes. FP keeper Emma Kruse kept her team in the game with 22 saves. Valley will host Robinson on Tuesday in the state quarterfinals.

The Skinny: Broad Run captured its fourth straight Region II title with a shut out over district rival County. Rachel Tharp continued her postseason scoring binge with a goal just before halftime on a header off a corner kick from Whitney Church. The Spartans added the insurance with less than eight minutes to on a Cassie Smith score from a cross by Danni Dangremond. Spartan freshman keeper continued her strong play since taking over after starter Emily Myerson was hurt in the district finals, making seven saves for the shutout.
