Radford (June 11, 2010) – Broad Run High School scored a goal in each half and captured its third straight Group AA Girls Soccer State Championship with a 2-0 victory over Loudoun County Saturday morning at Radford University as part of the 2010 Spring Jubilee.
Ellie Zoepfl provided the eventual game winner in the 21st minute, while Cassie Smith added the final strike just six minutes into the second period.
Zoepfl, who scored as a freshman in the 2008 title game won 1-0 by the Spartans, scored her goal with 18:05 left in the first half off a corner kick from Whitney Church, who had scored in the 2009 title game.
It was another Church corner kick that led to Smith's goal just 6:08 into the second half. Smith made it three straight years that the Spartans got a goal in the title game from a freshman as Erin Brady scored in last year's game.
Broad Run, which has won four state title in the last 12 years, finished with a 6-3 edge in shots and 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Spartan shutout -- the team's eighth straight in the postseason as BR out-scored opponents 20-0 on the way to the title -- was lead by the stifling defense of Jenny Taylor, Brenna Smith, Kacey Kelley and Erin Brady in front of freshman goalie Haley Casanova, who took over in the district finals when the starting keeper was injured and didn't allow a goal in six starts.
