Softball: Stone Bridge, Woodgrove Girls Bring Home Regional Titles

(June 3, 2013) - The Stone Bridge and Woodgrove high school softball teams brought back regional titles to Loudoun Friday with the Bulldogs taking the AAA Northern Region title with a 4-0 win over Madison at Falls Church High School and the Wolverines taking the AA Region II title wit a 6-0 win on the road at Powhatan.

For Woodgrove it was a third straight Region II title and for Stone Bridge it was back-to-back Northern Region crowns.

Both teams earned VHSL state quarterfinal home games Tuesday, June 4 with Stone Bridge (26-1) hosting Osbourn at 5:30 p.m. and Woodgrove (24-2) hosting Tabb at 6 p.m.

Northern Region Finals: Stone Bridge 4, Madison 0
Stone Bridge took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when the Northern Region Player of the Year, senior Niki Prince singled, moved around on steal and sacrifice then scored on a throwing error.

The Bulldogs added a run in the fourth inning, taking advantage of another error with
senior Sydney Broderick reaching base on an error. She moved around on a bunt, fielder's choice and then stole home.

Senior Courtney Gibson's RBI double in the fifth was part of two more runs with Madison again helping the Stone Bridge cause, hitting a batter, making an error and letting go two wild pitches.

Stone Bridge pitcher senior Kelly McDaniel allowed just three hits in the shutout win.

Region II Finals: Woodgrove 6, Powhatan 0
Junior Corinne Vennitti had her no-hitter bid broken up in the seventh inning but she earned the shutout 6-0 win. She finished with one walk and three strikeouts in the efficient performance in the pitching circle.

Woodgrove pounded out 11 hits in the win. The Wolverines led early, thanks to junior Rachel Harris' RBI single in the first inning scored senior Mackenzie Moler.

The Wolverines nursed that lead until the top of the fifth when they scored three runs to take a comfortable 4-0 lead.

Senior Taylor Kilgour started the inning with a single left and senior Alayna Furr followed with an infield single. Moler reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no outs.

Senior slugger Ashley Cole then doubled to center, scoring Kilgour but Futt was thrown out at the plate. Harris then brought both Moler and Cole home with a 2-run single to right.

Woodgrove added some insurance in the sixth inning with senior Meghan Roush singling to center with one out. Kilgour doubled, moving pinch runner Edka Wong to third. Furr then scored Wong on an infield hit and Moler followed with an RBI infield single to make it 6-0.

Vennitti lost her no-hit big with one away in the bottom of the seventh but she stranded the runner on first to end the game.
