Swim: Freedom Girls Win First Ever Cedar Run District Title

(Feb. 2, 2013) - Freedom High School swim coach Brent Miller -- who just two weeks ago donated his kidney to a family friend -- was supposed to sit down at Friday's Cedar Run District meet at the Freedom Aquatics Center in Manassas but his girls team it hard as they rallied for the school's first ever district swim title.

"My swimmers kept telling me to sit down because I was standing up and cheering too much," said Miller. "We were down by 30 early on and didn't take the lead until after the 200 free relay. It was a lot of fun; total team effort."

The Eagles 200 free relay team of Katherine Wroniewicz, Julia Faist, Katherine Doherty and Kathryn Johnson was the team's only first place of the night but Freedom had strong performances in the 100 back and 100 breast -- Wroniewicz and Doherty went 3-4 in the back with Caitlin Campbell 6th and Johnson and Maggie Eaton went 4-5 in the breast -- and then swam a school record 3:55.83 in the 400 relay to take third in the event and secure the overall team title with 407 points to Patriot's 391.5.

Broad Run girls were third with 352.5 followed by Battlefield (272), Osbourn (228) and Stonewall Jackson (81).

On the boys side, Patriot (495) swam away over rival Battlefield (401) with Freedom (291) third followed by Broad Run (235), Osbourn (188) and Stonewall Jackson (122).

Freedom's Michael Harman had a great meet with a win in both the 50 and 100 free as well as anchoring the winning 200 free relay with teammates Austen Bundy, Alex Meyers and John O'Brien. Broad Run's Jack Morrisroe was also a double winner, first in both the 100 fly and 100 back.

Broad Run's Emily Adams was also a double winner, taking the 100 and 200 freestyle.

Top eight individuals in each event and top four relays move on to the Northwest Region meet which will be held Feb. 8 at the Freedom Aquatics Center. Complete results.
