Basketball: How the West Won! Woodgrove Girls, Loudoun Valley Boys Takes Dulles District Titles

(Feb. 15, 2013) - It was a Purcellville sweep Friday night in the AA Dulles District basketball finals as the Woodgrove High School girls and Loudoun Valley High School boys took tournament championships.

The Loudoun Valley boys won their second straight Dulles District tournament title with a 71-60 win over Potomac Falls in the second game of the doubleheader before a packed crowd at Tuscarora High School in Leesburg.

In the opener, the Woodgrove girls (22-3 record) won their first ever tournament title with a 53-37 win over Loudoun County (21-4). The Wolverines also won the regular-season title with a perfect 18-0 district mark.

Loudoun County came in have won the last three tournaments and five since 2006 but the Raiders could not handle Woodgrove's defensive pressure which forced 26 turnovers, including 12 in the decisive third quarter.

Woodgrove sophomore Brooke Basinger scored a game-high 18 points and senior Maggie Buxton added 12 points, nine of which came on 3-pointers. The Wolverines balanced attack also featured a trio of seniors: Stephanie Purnell (9 points), Sarah Hardison (8) and Brittany Basinger (6).

Loudoun County was led by junior Maggie Phillips and sophomore Chloe Knox, each with 10.

In the boys contest, Potomac Falls (22-4) had beaten Loudoun Valley (23-3) twice in a four-day span last week to take a share of the Dulles regular-season title and clinch the No. 1 seed in the tournament but the Vikes turned the tables Saturday and never trailed from the middle of the first quarter on.


Viking junior Paul Rowley scored a game-high 24 points including a buzzer beater to end the first quarter that staked Valley to a 21-14 lead. Valley senior Josh Grimard added 18 and freshman Trey McDyre came off the bench for 13 points, 10 of which came in the second half.

Viking seniors Cameron Kiani and Jovon Miller each scored eight.

Potomac Falls sophomore Wayna Allen (16 points) and freshman Michael Janowski (14) combined to score 30 of the Panthers 60 points. Panther junior Deandre Thomas came off the bench to score 15 and senior point guard D'Shawn Shorts scored eight.

Potomac Falls managed to tie the game at 29-29 in the second quarter but Valley took a 35-31 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Vikes then opened the third, out-scoring the Panthers, 15-6, to take a big 50-37 lead with 2:21 left in the quarter.

The Panthers made a run that got them to within five, at 58-53, midway through the final quarter but Rowley drained a 3-pointer and then McDyre finished an "And One" to put the lead back to 11.
