Baseball: Broad Run's Craig Commits to Gordon College

(Feb. 8, 2013) - Broad Run High School senior catcher Dominic Craig recently made a verbal commitment to play baseball at NCAA Division III Gordon College in Massachusetts under coach John Rypel.

Coach Rypel saw Craig as he participated at the Head First Baseball Showcase in West Palm Beach, Florida, in November. After speaking with Coach Rypel, Craig visited the college in early December and made his commitment in January.

Craig carries a 3.9 GPA at Broad Run. His GPA, coupled with his SAT score, earned Dom the Presidential Scholarship at Gordon College. Gordon is a D3 school located in Wenham, MA, just minutes away from Boston. 

“Our coaching staff is really happy for Dom and his family. He is an outstanding student-athlete. He will do great things on the field and in the classroom at Gordon,” said Broad Run baseball coach, Pat Cassidy.

The son of Jim and Brea Craig from Ashburn, Va., Craig was given the coaches award last spring. He also competes in the summer for Spartan Varsity out of the state of Virginia, and completed last summer’s campaign hitting at a .400 clip with six doubles and five stolen bases.

When recently asked about his decision to continue his education and baseball career at Gordon College Craig said, “Baseball has always been my passion, and being given an opportunity to play at a school like Gordon is a dream come true.”

The head coach of the Scots, John Rypel, had this to say about adding him to the program next fall: “Dominic is a guy our coaching staff is really excited to have landed. He is a good athlete behind the plate and is consistent with his throws. I think he will only get better the more he grows into his frame and I believe his best baseball is ahead of him. I think the catching position will be our most intriguing competition next fall and Dominic will certainly have his opportunity to work for some early playing time.”

Craig will be joining a Gordon program that is gearing up for an exciting 2013 season. The Scots welcomed in the largest recruiting class in program history this fall and are looking to continue their climb up the Commonwealth Coast Conference standings.
