(May 15, 2013) - Freedom High School athletic director Matt Oblas announced Tuesday that Justin Powers has been hired as the school's new boys basketball varsity coach.
Powers has been an assistant coach at Robinson High School in Fairfax since 2008. He helped lead the Rams to the 2012 Concorde District championship and to a 2013 Northern Region semifinal appearance.
He has also served as a freshman coach at South County High School in Lorton and a JV girls head coach at Groton High School in New York. Powers played college basketball at SUNY-Courtland.
Powers currently teaches middle school physical education in Fairfax County.
Oblas: "Coach Powers is excited to build on Freedom's 2013 success. Off-season meetings and practices will begin in the near future."

Ok...didn't see that one coming. I think going with a first-time HC from another district/county sends a message to current LoCo asst hoops coaches. Now I'm even more interested to see what happens with Tuscarora.
