Football: McSorley Tosses School-Record 5 TDs as Briar Woods Opens Season with 15th Straight Win

Ashburn (Aug. 30, 2012) -Playing their first-ever varsity football game the Patriot Pioneers from Prince William County had the misfortune of facing the 2010 and 2011 AA Division 4 state champion Briar Woods Falcons on their home turf.

Receiving the kickoff, the Pioneers first-ever offensive play, however, was a stunner. Sophomore Cody Agnew unloaded a long, high, spiral that was caught in stride by WR Zak Watson and taken to the Falcon five. Four plays later RB Vic Ceglie scored the Pioneer’s first touchdown. K Jamie Corcoran made good on the extra point and the visitors had a 7-0 lead in less than a minute.

That would be the high point of the evening for the Pioneers as the Falcons ran off six consecutive touchdowns en route to a 42-14 victory. In a game which went to a running clock before half of the third quarter had elapsed the Falcons piled up 474 yards of offense as they won for the 14th consecutive game and for the 26th time in 27 contests. BW junior quarterback Trace McSorley finished with a school record five TDs in the win and has now thrown for more than 4,000 yards in his career.


Here is how it started. Falcon RB Daryll Gadsden returned the ensuing kickoff 26 yards to the Pioneer 32. QB Trace McSorley completed four of his first five passes to: Tristan Miller for 15; Brandon Polk for 13; Cam Serigne for seven; and Miller again for 13.

Then it was RB Cory Colder’s turn. Three carries covered the last 27 yards; Nick LaFranki8e’s extra point tied the game and the onslaught had begun.

After a three-and-out the Falcons started their drive on the Pioneer 27. Polk runs for 26; McSorley hits Miler for five, Serigne for 17 and the final 17 yards to Devin Ramos making the score 13-7.

The Pioneers got one first down on their next possession via a pass interference penalty before punting back to the Falcons who again drove into the end zone. This time it took four plays to cover requisite 62 yards.

The big play here was a 48 yard TD pass, McSorley to Polk. Colder’s two-point conversion made the score 21-7 just two minutes into the second quarter.

Until the two minute point in the fourth quarter the Falcon defense shut down their opponents, limiting them to only 86 more yards of offense after the successful opening drive.

NG Trei Germany led the team with six tackles. DB Mitch Krisfalusi and LB Chris Larco had five each while LB J.T. Logan, DE Nick Merletti contributed three. At CB McSorley picked off a Pioneer pass; Serigne and Marc Birmingham each notched a sack from the DE position.

The offense would score two more touchdowns in the second quarter. After McSorley’s interception on defense gave the Falcons the ball 57 yards from their end zone, Colder ran for five yards before McSorley and TE Matt Rolin hooked up for completions of 31 and 21 yards for the TD.

With 1:36 remaining in the half the Falcons would make the halftime score 35-7 lead as Rolin caught his second TD pass from McSorley from 15 yards. McSorley finished the evening completing 14 of 17 passes for 230 yards and a school-record five touchdowns.

Serigne caught four for 78 yards; Rolin, Ramos and Miller caught three each for 67, 39 and 26 yards respectively. Polk, playing in his first game as a Falcon sophomore made the most of his two receptions gaining 61 yards. He added 33 yards on two rushes.

The rushing leader was Colder who amassed 104 yards on 17 carries. After McSorley found Ramos in the end zone midway through the third period the clock went on running time and the game came to a swift conclusion.

The Pioneers scored their second touchdown with two minutes left in the game as Agnew and WR Nick Matthews combined on a 18 yard scoring strike.

This Friday will provide a stiff test for Briar Woods as they travel to Broad Run for a game against the only team to beat the Falcons since the start of the regular season in 2010.
