Football: Woodgrove Looks to Make it 2-0 Tonight at Brentsville

(Aug. 31, 2012) - Let's face it, Woodgrove High School new head football coach Mike Skinner is used to winning. He did it at Centreville High School where he led the Wildcats to a VHSL Division 5 state title in 2000 and he did it at Stone Bridge High School where he was the defensive coordinator who helped the Bulldogs get to back-to-back title games in 2009 and 2010.

And now Skinner is winning with the Wolverines, who thumped Jefferson County (WV) last Friday in his debut, 52-7, behind 378 yards rushing and go on the road tonight at Brentsville High School.


The Wolverines had two runners break 150 yards rushing in the win with Tucker Coil gaining 159 yards on just 12 attempts and Josh Sweet gaining 154 yards on 17 carries. Sweet scored on first half runs of 12 and 3 yards and Coil scored from 12 in the first half as the Wolverines were up big, 38-7 at the half  and forced a running clock in the second half with two more scores in the third quarter.

Woodgrove didn't need its passing game but Joseph Koester was an efficient 3 of 4 for 64 yards including a 24-yard score to Dylan Mellor and a 12-yard TD pass to Kevin Evangelisto.

The Wolverines will have a strong kicking game with the return of R.J. Warfel who is getting some college interest and connected on a 28-yard field goal Friday. Defensively, Will Hoffer picked off a pass and returned it 24 yards for a score as part of Woodgrove's 24-point second quarter outburst.
