News: Loudoun to Likely Have Six Schools in 5A Under New VHSL Plan

(Aug. 7, 2012) - The March 31 enrollment figures released by the Virginia High School League show Loudoun with six schools at the 5A level in the proposed alignment plan which takes the state's classifications from three to six starting with the 2013-14 school year.

The Ashburn area has Loudoun's three largest schools with Stone Bridge (1,842), Broad Run (1,764) and Briar Woods (1,752) combining for 5,358 students in the stretch from Brambleton  to Lansdowne. Stone Bridge would be the fifth largest 5A school in the state, trailing only Freedom of Prince William, Thomas Jefferson, Manchester and Massaponax.


Freedom in South Riding, Tuscarora in Leesburg and Potomac Falls in Sterling all fall on the smaller end of 5A.

In the 4A proposed classification, Woodgrove in Purcellville is one of the larger schools at 1,442 students, just missing 5A by 31 students. Loudoun County in Leesburg, Dominion and Park View in Sterling and Heritage in Leesburg all join Woodgrove in 4A with Heritage on the smaller side at 1,158, just missing dropping down to 3A by 40 students.

Loudoun Valley in Purcellville is Loudoun's lone 3A school at 1,061 enrollment and John Champe, set to open this month in Aldie, is projected a 2A school at 564 students. There is some speculation that increasing enrollment at Champe will push the school up to 3A by 2013-14.
