Soccer: Leesburg Christian Lions Win Boys State Championship

Leesburg (Oct. 30, 2009) - Despite a season plagued with injuries, the Leesburg Christian varsity boys soccer team endured a weekend of physical play to capture the Old Dominion Association of Christian Schools (ODACS) State Championship.


Seeded fourth in the Oct. 23-24 tournament, hosted by Valley Baptist Christian School in Edinburg, the Lions outlasted previously undefeated Heritage Christian 4-3, despite a valiant comeback attempt in the first semifinal.

That win advanced the Lions to the championship match, where they dominated Evangel Christian 5-2, thanks to multiple goals by tournament MVP Patrick Foss and Colombian-born senior Julian Zuniga.


In addition to Foss’ MVP trophy, senior Jeremy Mosteller, sophomore Thomas Mosteller, and senior Zuniga were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Leading the Lions to the ODACS state championship was, Dan Overstreet, who announced this was his final year leading the team. Overstreet was assisted by Howie Schlichting, the new athletic director at Leesburg Christian School. The Lions last earned the title of ODACS soccer champions in 2003.
