Volleyball: Leesburg Christian Alumni as Well as Lions Soccer Teams Help Raise "Dig Pink" Funds

Leesburg (Nov. 23, 2009) Earlier this month more than 100 people showed up to Leesburg Christian School to watch the Lions volleyball team play along side their alumni and the school's soccer team in a Dig Pink National Breast Cancer Awareness fundraising event.

The stands were loaded with people wearing pink clothing from bows to t-shirts. The event raised over $2,000 for the cause.


"It was a fabulous evening filled with good volleyball, good fellowship, good food and it was all for a good cause!," reported Leesburg Christian School Assitant Athletic Director Christa Schlichting.

The proceeds from all donations benefited the Side-Out Foundation, a national 501(c)(3) located in the Washington, D. C., metropolitan area. Funds are currently devoted to targeted therapies and molecular profiling where there has been a break through in diagnostics and treatment. Side-Out also devotes a portion of the funds to local and national “Life with Cancer” support organizations.

The Lady Lion’s varsity -- coached by Christa O. Schlichting and assisted by John Judd, who both also coach for the Northern Virginia Volleyball Association -- finished first in their VACA District and second in VACA Regionals. This is the second year for the Lady Lions to hold a Dig Pink Rally. The team set a goal to raise more than the previous year ($1,130), and the team did just that by raising a grand total of $2,000!

The Side-Out Foundation is a national 501(c)(3) located in the Washington, D. C., metropolitan area. They have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Breast Cancer research nationally through volleyball tournaments, clinics, and rallies. Their name underscores the purpose of the organization – “Side-Out” in volleyball occurs when one team wins a point while its opponent is serving, thereby regaining serve or control of play. Likewise in the war against breast cancer, the Side-Out Foundation will support health care professionals in their pursuit of practical solutions for women and men with this dreaded disease thus enabling those affected to regain control of their lives and living them to the fullest.
