Breaking News: VHSL Initial Plan to Move Broad Run, Freedom to AAA; Valley, Heritage Back to AA

(Nov. 17, 2009) - The Virginia High School League Redistricting and Reclassification Committee met today to create the initial plan for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 two-year cycle and if the plan holds a reversal will take place in Loudoun as Broad Run and Freedom move up to AAA and Heritage and Loudoun Valley shift back down to AA.

The initial plan is to move Broad Run and Freedom into the spots currently occupied by Heritage and Loudoun Valley into the 5-team AAA Cedar Run District in the Northwest Region and Valley and Heritage would then take the place of Broad Run and Freedom in the 7-team AA Dulles District in Region II.

"AAA has not been bad for us the one season we have been in it and we will be fine this year and next, but it will be nice to return to a district with all Loudoun schools and the natural rivalries."

Stone Bridge remains AAA and part of the Liberty District and Northern Region.

Heritage and Loudoun Valley return to AA size as the county opens two new schools next year, Tuscarora in Leesburg and Woodgrove in the Purcellville area.

The reported cutoff for AA and AAA classification in the next cycle will be 1,550 students with Broad Run just over that number and Potomac Falls just under that number. In the current cycle the cutoff was 1,600 with Broad Run just under.

VHSL Redistricting & Reclassification Meeting Schedule
Today - RandR Committee will create the Initial Plan.
January 26, 2010 - RandR Committee will discuss proposed modifications to the initial plan.
April 19, 2010 - RandR Committee will hear appeals and make its final recommendations.
May 6, 2010 - VHSL Executive Committee will approve a final alignment plan for 2011-12 and 2012-13.
