Dulles District: Top Seeds Advance so Region II Teams Set for Baseball, Softball, Soccer

May 23, 2011 - For the first time all season Dulles District teams were rooting for the top seeds to win on Friday and Saturday as a victory by the regular season champions in the tournament quarterfinals would mean that the winners of the other three first round contests would be assured of bids to the Region II tournament.

And in baseball, softball, and soccer that is exactly what happened as Broad Run baseball, Briar Woods softball, Park View boys soccer and Broad Run girls soccer all were victorious which means the remainder of this week's Dulles District tournaments are for seeding purposes only and the right to hang a championship banner in the gym. As far as Region II goes, regular season champions are the Dulles No. 1, regardless of how they fare this week, and the district's No. 2 thr No. 4 seed will be determined by the tournament results.

Briar Woods at No. 1 Broad Run
Freedom at Potomac Falls

The Skinny: Semifinal match-up feature Potomac Falls against the only team to beat the Panthers this season besides Broad Run. Top seed Spartans face rival Falcons in a rematch of an earlier extra inning marathon.

Softball
Loudoun County at No. 1 Briar Woods
Broad Run at Woodgrove
The Skinny: No. 5 seed LC knocked off Potomac Falls, which was just a win away from sharing the district title last week. The Raiders earlier this year upset Briar Woods, 1-0, and the Falcons haven't lost since. Woodgrove 10-run ruled BR early in the season only to suffer the season's first loss later at Broad Run. Seems like old playoff times for Woodgrove coach Joe Spicer, formerly at Loudoun Valley, and BR's Ed Steele.

Boys Soccer
Potomac Falls at No. 1 Park View
Tuscarora at Broad Run

The Skinny: Potomac Falls made a late run and has gone 4-0-1 in the last five matches. The Panthers lost 1-0 to the top seeded Pats the last time they faced. Top-seeded Broad Run out-scored the Huskies a combined, 8-1, in two meetings. Seems like old playoff times for Tuscarora coach Dave Gryder, formerly of Potomac Falls, and BR's Jon Hicks.

The Skinny: The 1st-year Wolverines, with some key players from last year Loudoun Valley team that made it to the AAA state semifinals, upset Loudoun County on Friday. In the regular season, Woodgrove tied Briar Woods twice, 1-1 each game. Broad Run swept rival Freedom, 3-1, on two occasions. 

For lacrosse and tennis, Region II starts this week, with lacrosse quarterfinals tonight and tennis quarters starting Tuesday:
