Charlottesville (May 18, 2011) - A traditional powerhouse school, another repeat winner and one newcomer claimed top honors in the 2010-11 Wachovia Cup race for year-long success. In Group A Madison County captured its 15th consecutive title, while Group AA Harrisonburg and Group AAA Westfield earned Cup titles. Locally, Loudoun County High School took fifth overall in Group AA.
Madison County now has 17 Cups earned over an 18-year period, while Harrisonburg claimed its first title. Westfield returned to the top spot for the second straight year and won its third Cup in five years.
First awarded in 1990, the Wachovia Cup represents 22 years of excellence. Six cups are presented, one for academic activities and one for athletics in each of VHSL’s three enrollment classifications. The winners for athletics will be announced in June, following the completion of spring championships.
Winners of the Wachovia Cup are determined by a point system based on performance in VHSL state competitions. Schools can earn academic activity points for outstanding participation in scholastic bowl, creative writing, theatre, forensics, debate, newspaper, yearbook and magazine. Complete standings are enclosed.
For the five activities involving team champions — Scholastic Bowl, creative writing, debate, theatre and forensics — points are awarded on the following basis: first place, 50; second place, 45; third place, 40; fourth place, 35; fifth place, 30; sixth place, 25; seventh place, 20; and eighth place, 15.
Scoring for publications is based on the ranking earned in the League’s evaluation service: Trophy Class, 35; First Place, 20; Second Place, 5.
Madison County (207.5) once again claimed superiority in Group A finishing 65 points ahead of second-place Radford (142.5). Madison students placed in seven of the nine state competitions, finishing with second place finishes in debate and creative writing, to go along with fourth in theatre and yearbook, while taking home points in magazine, news magazine and forensics. Radford finished third in creative writing and scored additional points in scholastic bowl, newspaper, yearbook and magazine. Rounding out the top five were Clarke County, Nandua and Riverheads all finishing in a tie for third place with 85 points.
In Group AA, Harrisonburg (205) claimed the top spot for the first time finishing 65 points ahead of runner-up, and defending champion, Salem-Salem (140). Harrisonburg tallied its bulk of points thanks to a second place finish in debate and a third place finish in scholastic bowl, to go along with fourth place finishes in yearbook and magazine, while also picking up points in creative writing and newspaper. Salem-Salem, winners last year, took home state title honors in forensics, along with a fourth place finish in yearbook and magazine, while adding additional points in debate. Prince Edward County came in third (135), while Lafayette (125) finished fourth, with Loudoun County (120) holding down fifth place.
Westfield, the point leader in Group AAA, scored 205 points, 32.5 points over second place Thomas Jefferson Science & Technology (172.5). The points came from finishes in six of nine activities. Westfield finished second in debate, fourth place in magazine, newspaper, yearbook and forensics, along with picking up points in creative writing. Thomas Jefferson Science & Technology earned points for a championship win in scholastic bowl along with additional points in newspaper, yearbook, debate and magazine. W.T. Woodson (127.5) finished third, with 10-time Cup champion Chantilly (120) and West Springfield (117.5) rounding out the top five.

Wow, enough from almost anyone, who can get a job nearby, to moved to Madison. Great scholastic numbers from them. Congrats to all the schools, and of course to the students who put in the time effort and brainpower to get there.
